Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Tarin died beneath the branches of the first level.

His party had entered Fey Nights for an ordinary attempt. They had cleared the foggy paths before, but none of them had defeated every possible guardian, and a different route promised better awareness training than repeating familiar choices.

The decision carried them into a grove held by red caps and quicklings.

The fight remained manageable until the quicklings drew the party’s attention away from the roots. Red caps rose from shallow pits behind them, separating Tarin from the healer. He forced a path back long enough for the healer and two others to reach higher ground. The final red cap caught him before he could follow.

His body vanished from the grove.

The rest of the party continued the attempt with four members while Sanctuary’s hospital received Tarin’s restored body. An attendant found him breathing beneath a clean blanket with no wound remaining from the red cap’s blade.

He did not awaken.

[Physical restoration complete.]

[Consciousness assigned to a qualified afterlife destination.]

[Maximum return period: Twelve hours.]

The destination had qualified him long before his death.

Tarin had first entered the Wayfarers’ Fellowship because it offered meals between dungeon attempts. Derren gave him no membership oath. He explained the fellowship’s service requirement and handed Tarin a bundle of five wooden tokens.

Tarin spent the next month earning their return. He carried an injured adventurer’s packs from the portal plaza. He found lodging for a family whose caravan arrived after dark. He repaired a handcart, delivered food to a hospital visitor, and helped a separated party search the message boards. Each person received one token and decided independently whether to return it.

All five eventually reached the bowl in the prayer room.

Five returned tokens qualified Tarin to receive an invitation into the fellowship’s hidden membership. They did not promise an afterlife, reveal its living entrance, or give him authority over anyone else. He accepted the invitation, continued serving when no token remained to be earned, and used the prayer room often enough that his conduct became more important than the original requirement.

His consciousness opened its eyes beside a steady fire.

Tarin stood in a body shaped from muted light. The torn clothes from the grove had become whole, and the pain in his chest had disappeared. A clock near his hand began counting down from twelve hours.

[Destination: The Steady Hearth]

[Afterlife form active.]

[Choose Return at any time to awaken in the restored hospital body.]

The hall surrounding him matched the symbol used by the fellowship. A lamp burned above two joined hands on the wall, but no statue occupied the room and no name identified the realm’s custodians. Long tables faced a central hearth. Six doors led to sleeping rooms, a kitchen, a workshop, a prayer chamber, and two sealed wings.

An attendant in plain gray clothing approached without asking how Tarin had died.

”Your body is safe in the hospital. You may leave whenever you choose, and the clock will return you when it ends.” The attendant said.

Tarin looked down at his hands. They felt solid when he closed them, although their color remained dimmer than the attendant’s.

”Can I be killed here?”

”The Steady Hearth offers no protected battle. Avoid dangers you would avoid while alive.”

The answer matched the warning every adventurer had received about dying again before the twelve-hour period ended. Tarin had no intention of testing it.

The attendant offered him food, a sleeping room, and a list of optional tasks. Eating did not affect the body in the hospital, but the warm bread and stew still carried taste and comfort. Rest reduced the strain of arriving. Neither service demanded payment.

The quest board held work suited to the realm’s size.

[Prepare six arrival rooms.]

[Sort provisions by likely need.]

[Guide a new visitor to the Hall of Rest.]

[Repair three benches in the central hall.]

Tarin selected the provisions.

The storage room held blankets, water, simple food, clean clothing, and tools intended for afterlife forms. None could leave the realm. The task did not ask him to count objects and place them on marked shelves. Five arrival records described who might need them: a burned traveler whose restored body would be safe but whose consciousness still remembered pain, a frightened child who had died during a caravan attack, an armored veteran, a healer exhausted before death, and an adventurer who had chosen to leave another afterlife.

Tarin prepared separate bundles based on the records. He placed water and loose clothing nearest the burned traveler, moved the child’s supplies into a room near the attendants, and added writing materials to the healer’s bundle so any observations could be recorded before awakening.

The attendant reviewed his choices without treating the task as an examination with one hidden answer.

”Why place the veteran farthest from the hearth?”

”His record says he wants quiet. The room near the workshop has fewer people passing it.” Tarin said.

The last bundle entered its place.

[Provisioning Service complete.]

[Organization skill progress recorded.]

[Steady Hearth favor earned.]

The progress entered Tarin’s personal record rather than attaching itself to the temporary supplies. He could carry the improvement back because he had performed the work. The blankets and food remained part of the realm.

One of the expected arrivals appeared before Tarin finished returning the unused supplies. The burned traveler arrived without visible wounds, but his afterlife form still carried the sensation of smoke and heat. He backed away from the hearth and nearly chose immediate return before an attendant reached him.

Tarin brought the bundle he had prepared and guided the traveler to a room where the fire could not be seen. Cool water and clean clothing gave him ordinary actions to concentrate on while the attendant explained that his body had already been restored. The traveler chose to remain long enough for the remembered pain to fade.

No quest notice appeared for helping him. Tarin had already completed the assigned work. The absence of another reward made the purpose of the realm clearer than another system message would have.

Another visitor arrived before Tarin left the storage room.

Garrick wore an afterlife body over the equipment of a road guard. Tarin recognized him from the fellowship’s public task board. Garrick had accepted the request to recover the iron crown from an abandoned shrine. He found it beneath fallen stone, carried it back to Sanctuary, and helped a metalworker repair the worst damage before placing it over the fellowship’s small memorial.

The public task had ended there.

The Steady Hearth recorded another step.

[The Keeper’s Standard]

[Living-world relic recovered and restored.]

[Carry the standard’s remembered form to the memorial alcove.]

[Completion reward: Hall of Discipline restored.]

An iron fitting appeared on the central table. It was not the physical relic displayed in Sanctuary. The object represented the history and effort attached to Garrick’s completed service, shaped into something an afterlife form could handle.

Garrick lifted it.

”I thought the task ended when we mounted the crown.”

”The public task did.” The attendant said. ”The service created another opportunity here. You may refuse it.”

Garrick asked where the memorial alcove stood, then accepted.

The alcove waited beyond the workshop behind a door that had remained closed when Tarin arrived. No enemy guarded it. The difficulty came from the incomplete standard inside. A wooden pole had split into three sections, the cloth had rotted away, and the bracket intended to hold the iron crown lacked two pins.

Tarin helped because the task allowed voluntary assistance. Garrick shaped the pins while Tarin repaired the pole and sorted strips of cloth by strength. Two attendants showed them how the standard had once been assembled, but neither completed the work for them.

The repaired standard carried the lamp-and-hands symbol instead of a commander’s crest.

Garrick fixed the remembered iron crown above it and placed the standard in the alcove.

[The Keeper’s Standard complete.]

[Hall of Discipline restored.]

A sealed door across the courtyard opened.

The chamber beyond contained a sand floor, wooden practice weapons, weighted frames, and space for small groups to train. No army waited inside. One gray-clad instructor appeared beside a rack and began checking the equipment.

The training hall did not offer secret power for attending one lesson. Its available courses emphasized formation discipline, escort work, controlled withdrawal, and protecting injured companions. Advanced instruction remained locked behind continued service and demonstrated reliability.

Tarin understood why ordinary fellowship members had not been told about it. Public knowledge of martial rewards would attract people interested in the reward rather than the work that qualified them.

He spent the remaining hours helping prepare arrival rooms. Garrick entered the first formation lesson. Other visitors came and left through the central hall, each carrying a clock and the choice to awaken early.

When Tarin’s clock fell below ten minutes, the attendant returned.

”Any earned progress will follow you. Memories will remain. Objects belonging to the Steady Hearth will not.”

Tarin sat near the fire until the final second.

His afterlife form dissolved.

He awakened in Sanctuary’s hospital beneath the same blanket that had covered his restored body. Less than a minute later, his record confirmed the organization progress and Steady Hearth favor he had earned.

Derren visited after Tarin had eaten and the hospital attendants had finished their checks. He brought no crowd and asked for no proof beyond what Tarin volunteered to show.

Tarin described the hall, the attendants, the return clock, and the supply quest. He left Garrick’s training reward out until Garrick returned and chose to discuss it himself.

That evening, Tarin spoke to six hidden fellowship members in the rented rooms. He answered their practical questions and refused to turn his death into a promise that every member would reach the same place.

”Five tokens allowed me to join. The place judged everything after them too.” Tarin said. ”No one should enter the dungeon expecting death to prove anything.”

His account brought four new applicants during the following days. Attendance at the meals increased, and more people asked how to begin the five services. The growth remained small enough that most adventurers passing the rooms noticed only a useful organization with fuller tables.

In the Steady Hearth, Malerc and Kharveck reviewed the result through the authority they had claimed as custodians.

The first visitor had accepted service without being pushed toward it. The relic chain had restored the Hall of Discipline. Neither visitor had learned the custodians’ names, and the hidden living entrance in Corathen remained known only to Malerc and Kharveck.

Kharveck opened the new training schedule.

”Two visitors and one hall.”

”Enough to learn whether they return.” Malerc replied.

Below them, an attendant prepared the next room beside the steady fire.
