Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Hades did not resemble a prison or a battlefield.

The road beyond the gate entered a walled district built around broad courts, narrow markets, and buildings marked with bronze tablets. Dead adventurers moved between them in afterlife forms. Some carried quest records. Others compared equipment near training yards or waited beneath signs identifying different judgments and services.

Clocks appeared beside many of them. A visitor with less than a minute remaining sat on a stone bench and finished writing a message in his system record. His form vanished when the clock reached zero. No one nearby treated the disappearance as a death.

His consciousness had returned to the restored body waiting in Sanctuary’s hospital.

The Five Knots drew more attention.

Their boots disturbed dust. Their lamps produced heat. Orin’s injured shoulder remained strapped, and every weapon or tool they carried occupied physical space. The living-intruder marks beside their names made the difference impossible to hide.

A warden directed them toward a registration court without asking how they had died.

Five lines divided the court. Dead visitors joined lines labeled Judgment, Training, Restitution, Service, and Unassigned. The Five Knots approached a sixth desk set apart beneath a bronze sign.

[Physical Entrants]

The clerk behind it wore dark robes and possessed the solid appearance of a constructed inhabitant rather than a temporary visitor. He opened the party record and found The Road Beneath Still Water without requesting an explanation.

”Five passage marks, five living entrants, and no return fare.” The clerk said.

”The outward coins were the only payment the quest awarded.” Tessa replied.

”The outward coins brought you to the office authorized to offer the return coins.”

The clerk placed a metal tablet on the desk.

[The Hall of Closed Names]

[Recover the passage seal.]

[Return the seal to the River Office.]

[Required state: The seal must be removed and transported by a living body.]

[Primary reward: Five return-passage coins.]

[Additional rewards: Restricted trainer access, restricted market access, and continuation of The Road Beneath Still Water.]

The primary reward solved the party’s immediate problem, provided they completed the objective without losing anyone.

Kesh studied the requirement.

”Why can a dead visitor not carry the seal?”

”The seal is fixed to the physical side of the hall.” The clerk said. ”Afterlife forms can see its housing, but they cannot lift or remove it. Living hands are required.”

”Then why has no living entrant recovered it already?” Belda asked.

The clerk turned the tablet over. A second diagram showed two routes running beside one another. Solid gates divided the first. Mist barriers divided the second.

”The physical route reaches the seal. Several controls opening the physical route exist on the spirit side. Temporary visitors can operate the spirit controls but cannot remove the seal. Living entrants can remove the seal but cannot cross the mist barriers leading to those controls.”

The quest required both kinds of participant.

The Five Knots had brought five living bodies and no afterlife form under their direction.

Tessa examined the reward record. ”Does the River Office assign a dead visitor to accompany us?”

”No. Temporary visitors choose their own quests. You may seek cooperation from someone qualified to enter the hall, or you may discover another solution.”

The clerk did not offer names, issue an employee, or pretend the Underworld owed them a missing party member.

The Five Knots could refuse. Refusal would leave them free to seek other work, pay the ferryman with secrets or valued possessions, or search for another physical exit. None offered the same progression or guaranteed five coins.

Tessa accepted the objective for the party.

[The Hall of Closed Names accepted.]

[Passage seal carriers recognized: Five living entrants.]

[Spirit-side keyholder: None.]

The clerk marked a route through the district and directed them toward the River Office before departure.

The office occupied a low building facing a channel connected to the Styx. Five empty settings waited behind a barred window, each shaped for one funerary coin. A receiving frame beside them matched the dimensions of the passage seal shown on the quest tablet.

The river official confirmed the exchange without adding another payment condition.

”Return the seal intact. The office releases one return coin to each recognized party member.”

”What happens if one member is no longer with the party?” Kesh asked.

”Earned rewards remain assigned through the quest record. Physical coins are released to physical claimants. Any member returned to a hospital body receives the recorded reward after consciousness returns.”

The answer protected earned payment without offering transportation. A member who died would leave the Underworld through revival, while the survivors would still need to carry the seal back and reach the ferryman.

They left the River Office with no coins and one objective.

The district’s services revealed the practical difference between living intruders and dead visitors.

A training yard admitted the armored dead in groups of ten. The gate rejected the Five Knots because its exercises used protected afterlife forms that could be restored at the yard’s boundary. A market selling memory-bound equipment allowed the Five Knots to look but refused every purchase. The goods existed for afterlife forms and would not attach to living bodies.

Dead visitors handled the displayed weapons and armor without difficulty. Their temporary condition did not make them helpless or insubstantial inside Hades; only particular magical wards and physical objects separated their access from the party’s.

Other doors opened only for the living.

A narrow shop beside the River Office sold ordinary rope, lamp oil, food, and physical repair materials at high prices. Its constructed merchant accepted dungeon coins because the goods were ordinary objects rather than passage fare. A second counter offered equipment designed to resist spirit-side interference, but the Five Knots’ living-intruder status only permitted them to inspect the common stock.

The restricted shelves listed on their quest reward remained sealed.

They replaced part of the rope lost during the descent and purchased a brace for Orin’s shoulder. No service healed the injury. The brace only supported the joint well enough for him to continue safely.

The route toward the Hall of Closed Names crossed the Court of Measures. Dead visitors presented completed obligations to three judges seated beneath hanging scales. The judgments offered quests and restrictions rather than permanent sentences. A thief argued for permission to repay an owner instead of recovering a stolen object from a shifting maze. A deserter accepted a service escorting frightened visitors between dangerous districts.

Anyone could refuse. Refusal closed opportunities or ended the visit, but no judge claimed a soul permanently.

Near the far side of the court, a dead adventurer compared a bronze obligation tablet with three separate street signs. His remaining clock showed less than two hours.

He wore a round shield and carried a wrapped bundle under one arm. The tablet required him to place the bundle in the Memorial of Unkept Promises before his return to the hospital.

The signs directed him toward three memorial courts with nearly identical names.

Kesh paused long enough to read the obligation.

”The memorial named on your tablet is not listed here.” Kesh said.

The adventurer lowered the tablet. ”I noticed.”

”The first symbol is a district marker, not part of the memorial’s name. You need the lower eastern court.”

Kesh had learned the difference by comparing the clerk’s route mark with the signs surrounding the River Office. The upper symbols identified districts. The remaining inscription identified the destination.

The adventurer checked the signs again.

”The eastern court is behind the Hall of Closed Names.”

”Our route passes the hall.” Tessa said.

They traveled together.

The adventurer introduced himself only as Harod. His body slept in the hospital after a failed Masquerade Castle attempt. During the heist, he had promised to cover a companion’s retreat and abandoned the position when another target appeared easier to claim. His afterlife judgment required him to carry the companion’s broken insignia to the memorial and record the promise he had failed to keep.

The obligation did not force an apology or declare him permanently condemned. It required him to acknowledge the decision before his twelve hours ended.

Harod had entered the Hall of Closed Names during an earlier visit and recognized the quest marker beside the Five Knots.

”You have living-intruder marks.” Harod said. ”The hall will send you through the bronze route.”

”The clerk said the controls are divided.” Belda replied.

”More than divided. Bronze barriers stop physical bodies. Mist barriers stop afterlife forms. A lever reached by the dead may open a bronze gate, while a weight moved by the living may clear a mist passage. My group failed because all of us were dead. We reached the seal and could not move it.”

”How did your group leave?” Min asked.

”We waited for our clocks or withdrew through the spirit entrance. The hall did not trap us permanently.”

Harod’s earlier attempt confirmed the clerk’s explanation. Five living members could carry the seal but could not operate every spirit-side control.

The eastern road narrowed between buildings carved with rows of covered names. At the next junction, a bronze gate blocked Harod’s route toward the memorial. Its mechanism stood on the living side of a waist-high stone divider. Harod could see it but could not cross the ward surrounding the handle.

Tessa opened the gate for him.

The action required no quest and offered no reward. It allowed Harod to carry his obligation tablet toward the memorial before his clock expired.

He stopped beyond the gate.

”The first split inside the hall is misleading.” Harod said. ”The spirit passage appears to descend, but it returns above the physical route. Keep track of height, not direction. The paired controls meet again near the seal chamber.”

Kesh recorded the warning.

Harod continued toward the Memorial of Unkept Promises. The Five Knots turned toward the hall.

The Hall of Closed Names stood at the end of a sunken court. Bronze panels covered one half of its entrance. Gray mist filled the other. Names appeared across both surfaces and faded before any remained long enough to read.

The party’s quest opened the bronze side.

Beyond it, a physical corridor descended beneath heavy gates and stone mechanisms. A parallel passage ran behind a wall of dark glass. Its floor climbed in the opposite direction and crossed the living route at several heights.

Dead visitors moved through the distant passage. None wore a quest link connecting them to the Five Knots.

The first physical gate waited at the bottom of the stairs. Its opening lever stood behind a mist barrier in the parallel corridor.

[Hall of Closed Names]

[Physical bearers present: Five.]

[Spirit-side keyholder present: None.]

The Five Knots had reached an objective built for living hands.

The first locked gate required someone dead.
