Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The dungeon would not allow Max to seal an afterlife completely.

He discovered the restriction when he attempted to finalize Valhalla. The realm passed every test involving death, restoration, voluntary departure, battle protection, and return routing. The final approval still failed.

LIVING ACCESS PATH REQUIRED.

Max opened the explanation. Any location capable of containing his dungeon core had to remain reachable by a living intruder. Afterlife Authority allowed him to hide the route, divide it into stages, guard it, and make it extraordinarily difficult. It did not allow him to create a destination that could only be reached by dying.

The restriction did not bother him. It gave the afterlives another use.

Living entrances could become some of the most difficult secrets in the dungeon.

He first tried to create a shared road with branches leading to all twenty-five realms. The interface accepted the design, which was reason enough for Max to reject it. Once adventurers discovered the road, every afterlife would become part of the same expedition. The separate realms would lose much of their mystery, and anyone searching for the dungeon core could investigate them in sequence.

Max deleted the road.

Each afterlife would have its own entrance. The method used to reach Valhalla would reveal nothing about the underworld. A group could spend months solving one route without learning whether another began in a forest, beneath a city, inside an instance, or through a ritual performed at a particular location.

Anna approved immediately. ”Twenty-five secrets are better than one.”

”Only if the secrets are different. If every route ends with a hidden portal, adventurers will start searching walls.” Max agreed. A entrance for the living needed to feel like it belonged to the realm it reached.

Valhalla’s route began with battle.

He placed an old stone marker in a high pass within a mountain in Corathen. It bore no title and displayed only a weathered carving of a spear beneath a broken sun. Touching it did nothing. Striking it did nothing. Pouring blood over it, shouting challenges at it, and attempting to pry it out of the mountain did nothing.

The marker responded when a living adventurer fought beside it against an enemy stronger than himself and refused an offered escape in order to protect someone else. If the act met Valhalla’s standard, the broken sun in the carving became whole for a single hour.

During that hour, the adventurer could see a narrow trail climbing into a storm that did not exist for anyone else. He could bring companions, but each companion had to willingly accept the storm before seeing the path.

The climb contained no ordinary monsters. Wind tried to tear climbers from the ledges. Thunder erased spoken instructions. Illusions offered warm shelters that led back to the beginning. At three points, the group had to choose between advancing and helping constructed travelers placed in danger. Ignoring all three did not kill them. It led them to a false summit where the route ended.

Those who reached the true summit found a bridge made from overlapping shields. Crossing it while alive brought them to the edge of the Fields of Victory.

The route did not lead anywhere near the hall. Living intruders arrived in contested territory, visible to scouts and subject to Valhalla’s laws. They received none of the realm’s combat-reset protection. If they died there, the ordinary revival system processed their deaths.

”Can someone who discovers the entrance sell the route?” Anna asked.

”Yes. Knowledge should matter.”

”They can control the instructions. They cannot make the marker recognize someone who fails the requirement, and they cannot carry unwilling people up the trail.”

Max added small variations so the route could not be reduced to exact foot placement. The mountain, storm, and tests would remain recognizable, but they would respond to the group rather than repeat mechanically.

The entrance to Elysium worked differently. Somewhere in Corathen, Max placed a neglected garden containing a single dead tree. The tree revived only when visitors repaired the garden without claiming it, charging admission, or removing anything valuable. Once restored, its shadow became a path at sunset. The path led through a maze that opened for acts of generosity and closed when travelers competed to reach the end first.

The Field of Reeds could be reached by following a river that appeared only during a rare flood inside an agricultural instance. Adventurers had to travel upstream while repairing three damaged settlements. The final gate opened when the residents, not the dungeon interface, judged that the travelers had helped enough.

The Sea of Lanterns required a voyage into an ordinary dungeon sea without a system map. A captain had to extinguish every navigational light, surrender control of the vessel to the current, and follow a star visible only in reflected water. The route was dangerous because it demanded trust in signs that could not be observed directly.

The Endless Library accepted living visitors who assembled a complete book from pages hidden across unrelated scholarly quests. The pages contained no map. Once bound in the correct order, the book became a door when opened in a place where no other book was present.

”Someone will try to duplicate the pages.” Anna said.

”Copies will produce copies of the text. Only the pages earned from the quests carry the route.”

”Someone will steal them.”

”That may work.”

Anna glanced at him. ”You sound pleased.”

”A route to a secret afterlife should be capable of starting a conflict.”

The Summerland’s living entrance required a seed awarded for restoring a damaged habitat. The seed had to be planted somewhere its owner would never personally benefit from the tree. Years of natural growth would have made the route impractical, so Max allowed care to accelerate it. When the tree flowered, sleeping beneath it during the first bloom carried the visitor into the Summerland.

The Forge Beyond the Flame demanded a crafted key. No single smith could make it. One person had to refine the metal, another shape it, another inscribe it, and a fourth willingly destroy his finest completed work to provide the heat for the final tempering. The key opened a furnace door that appeared cold to everyone who had not contributed.

The celestial court required a petitioner to resolve a chain of disputes without accepting payment from any party. At the end, an ordinary-looking official offered a blank appointment scroll. Signing it opened a gate, but also assigned the visitor a minor office upon arrival. A person could reach the court alive and immediately discover that he was responsible for inspecting bridges or recording complaints from argumentative spirits.

Anna stared at the route. ”That may be the cruelest one.”

”It is not a hell.” Max said.

”Then why does it begin with unpaid mediation and end with employment?”

Anna moved the celestial court beneath the category marked suitable for administrators.

The underworld required the most extensive physical route.

Max wanted a living party to descend rather than simply solve a ritual. He placed the first entrance deep beneath an abandoned section of the dungeon where natural-looking caves narrowed around a black stream. Reaching the stream required passing through regions designed to feel older and less controlled the farther the party traveled.

The water eventually joined a river flowing through a cavern without a visible ceiling. A ferryman waited at a stone landing. Max did not name him Charon. The realm drew from stories of Hades and the River Styx, but it remained a dungeon creation rather than the literal Greek underworld.

The ferryman accepted several forms of payment. Coins worked, but only if earned from a quest involving the dead. A true secret could purchase passage, though the ferryman would speak it aloud once the boat left shore. A treasured object could also be given, provided the system judged that surrendering it represented a real loss.

Adventurers who attacked the ferryman did not gain a free crossing. The boat departed without them, and the river filled with creatures attracted by violence.

On the far shore, living travelers entered the underworld through a gate that marked them as intruders. They retained their bodies, equipment, and ordinary revival protections, but they did not receive the privileges offered to people routed there after death. Judges could question them. Wardens could restrict them. Certain shops refused to serve them, while others sold goods only to living intruders because visitors routed there after death had no use for them.

The route created possibilities beyond hiding Max’s core. A quest could require a living party to carry something across the Styx, speak to someone temporarily residing in the underworld, recover an object that could not travel through a death-route, or escort a visitor back through the living exit.

Max added no such quest yet. Building a road did not require immediately telling adventurers where it led.

The Hearth of Ancestors opened through a family memorial maintained for seven generations. The Moonlit Hunt could be entered by following prey that left tracks only under a new moon. The Mountain of Burdens required a traveler to carry an object representing a confessed failure from the dungeon’s lowest public road to a shrine near its highest peak without placing it in storage.

Some routes would be discovered quickly. Others might remain hidden for years.

Max preferred that uncertainty to a uniform system. An adventurer who found a living path to one realm had learned one secret, not the structure of death itself.

While Max worked on the entrances, Hizon visited Nethren’s joint instance.

The fungal dungeon master had invested everything he could spare into the shared project. Hizon matched the investment, and their agreement divided ownership, expenses, and earnings evenly.

”They destroyed the western bloom chamber again.” Nethren said.

Hizon examined the damage through the instance controls. ”That is what it is for.”

”I know. I am deciding whether they destroyed it too easily.”

The complaint pleased Hizon. Nethren was beginning to think like the overseer of a repeatable challenge rather than the defender of a single irreplaceable home.

They watched a new party enter. The adventurers crossed a cavern where luminous shelves of fungus responded to sound. Loud movement woke defenders and caused bridges to retract. Careful groups could pass quietly, while aggressive groups could fight through and create temporary paths by toppling the larger growths.

Nethren had rebuilt some of the creatures purchased for Fungal Hollow, but the hollow itself had not survived. Its dungeon master and surviving creatures had become part of Max’s dungeon; its territory had not been copied into place. The basic space Max had provided for Nethren remained mostly empty while he built funds through the joint instance. Once he had enough dungeon points, he intended to construct his own instance there and expand the space later if the original allotment proved too small.

For now, the joint instance was working.

Hizon reviewed the latest earnings and assigned Nethren his half. ”Do not spend all of it immediately.”

”You told me growth requires investment.”

”It does. So does surviving a mistake.”

Nethren reserved part of the payment with visible reluctance. The remainder went toward converting another group of his creatures into eternal souls. Dungeon-battle restoration had returned the creatures lost during his defeat, but it would not protect them from ordinary deaths now that the battle was over. Eternal souls were necessary if he wanted defenders who could return during normal operation.

Hizon approved the choices the fungal Lord had chosen and left Nethren arguing with himself over whether a spore launcher needed greater range or a less obvious firing sac.

Back in the afterlife controls, Max completed the twenty-fifth living route.

The interface finally allowed him to approve the network.

He checked the locked revival functions once more. Restoration remained immediate. The hospital remained available. Graveyards remained unchanged. Afterlife visitors could depart whenever they chose, but returning after departure would require another qualifying death or the discovery of that realm’s unique living entrance.

Max connected the twenty-five branches.

Across the dungeon, nothing visibly changed. No bell rang. No proclamation appeared. Adventurers continued fighting, trading, exploring, and ignoring the twelve-hour clocks above their statuses.
