Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Malerc found the unclaimed realm where the newest branches of the afterlife system thinned into darkness.

It possessed no name. A stone hall stood at its center with an empty courtyard on one side and a field of pale grass on the other. Most of its doors opened onto unfinished rooms. The largest chamber contained rows of bare tables beneath a ceiling that gave off a dim, even light.

Kharveck walked the length of the hall and returned without finding another inhabitant.

”Small.” Kharveck said.

”Large enough to begin my plan.” Malerc replied.

The realm had appeared after the wider afterlife network became active. Its system record identified it as a minor destination seed: a space that could be claimed by beings capable of maintaining it, provided they established a valid purpose, a qualified group of visitors, and a living route.

Malerc opened the claim interface.

[Minor Afterlife Realm]

[Current state: Unclaimed]

[Available custodians: Malerc and Kharveck]

[Claim costs will be drawn from custodian authority, pledged favor, and voluntary contributions connected to the realm.]

[Living access path required before death routing can activate.]

Malerc accepted the first position. Kharveck placed his authority beside Malerc’s before the realm could test the claim again.

The pale grass bent toward the courtyard. Light gathered in the empty windows, and a low flame appeared in the hall’s central hearth. It produced warmth without consuming the bare stone beneath it.

[Custodians recognized.]

[Define the realm’s purpose.]

Malerc had prepared the answer before entering.

”Service given freely. Strength developed through discipline. Shelter maintained by those who benefit from it.”

The words entered the realm’s record. The empty hall remained unchanged, but new options appeared around its doors. Kitchens, sleeping rooms, workshops, storage spaces, and a small prayer chamber could be restored first. Training grounds, advanced instructors, and defensive structures required a larger body of committed followers and completed realm quests.

Kharveck examined the locked martial hall longer than any other option.

”We could spend years feeding travelers before that opens.”

”Then we will know which travelers return after they have been fed.”

Their strength could force part of the realm into shape, but power spent that way would recover slowly. Mortal participation offered another source. Prayers established recognition. Contributions restored services. Work completed in the fellowship’s name strengthened the connection between the living organization and the realm.

Malerc restored the kitchen, the first storage room, and six sleeping chambers. Kharveck spent part of his authority on attendants who could receive visitors and explain the realm without naming its custodians. The attendants wore plain gray clothing marked with a lamp above two joined hands.

They selected the same symbol for the organization taking shape in Sanctuary.

Their authority ended at the realm’s boundary. Within it, they could approve attendants, shape quests, restore services, and establish the conduct used to recognize suitable visitors. The wider afterlife network retained control of physical restoration, hospital placement, the twelve-hour return, and the choice offered to each qualified consciousness.

The arrangement gave them what they needed. They controlled the destination and the opportunities it offered. The general resurrection system continued operating according to its established rules.

The public work began through Derren, a former caravan clerk whose damaged leg had ended his years on the road. He occupied two rented rooms near a path used by adventurers traveling between the market and the portal plaza. One room held shelves, a long table, and a stove. The second offered benches, washbasins, and a curtained area where injured travelers could rest while waiting for companions.

Derren knew that two patrons had supplied the first rent and provisions. He received their instructions through sealed messages and occasional meetings with representatives whose names meant nothing outside the fellowship. He had never seen Malerc or Kharveck.

The sign above the door read Wayfarers’ Fellowship. Beneath the name sat the symbol of the lamp and joined hands.

On the first morning, Derren served stew to three adventurers whose party had lost its healer and run short of dungeon coins. They offered to repay the meal after their next run. He gave them three wooden tokens instead.

”Bring these back by helping someone else through the door. That settles the meal.” Derren said.

One returned before evening with a young archer searching for two companions who had left the hospital without him. Derren checked the messages left with nearby inns and found where the other two had taken rooms. The token went into a box beside the stove.

The fellowship did not ask the archer to join. It offered him a place to sit, directions to the inn, and enough food to stop his hands from shaking.

Other services developed from the same pattern. Members stored simple bandages, lamp oil, rope, and preserved food in the front room. Adventurers contributed what they could or worked a short service in exchange. A person separated from a party could leave a written notice. Someone waiting for a hospital patient could sleep on a bench without paying an inn for a full room.

The prayer room occupied the quietest corner of the second rented space. It held no statue. A single lamp stood on a stone shelf above a shallow bowl. Derren explained that members could light the lamp, speak whatever request or promise mattered to them, and leave without giving him the details.

The first prayers were cautious. One adventurer asked for the strength to return to a wounded companion in Corathen. Another promised to contribute part of his next reward if the separated members of his party reached Sanctuary safely. A woman waiting beside her brother’s hospital bed asked that he find some peace in whichever afterlife he had chosen before his consciousness returned.

Malerc heard every prayer connected to the symbol.

He answered none with a voice. The fellowship located the missing companion through its message board. It delivered food to the hospital visitor. The adventurer who promised part of his reward found the contribution box waiting when he returned.

The acts mattered more than claims of devotion. The realm’s eligibility record began to form around repeated participation.

[Wayfarers’ Fellowship recognition established.]

[Qualifying conduct may include sincere prayer, voluntary contribution, service completed for another member, and continued support of the fellowship.]

[A single act does not guarantee entry.]

Malerc adjusted the wording that would be shown to future visitors. Members would learn that the fellowship offered a place between death and revival. They would also learn that entry depended on what they did while alive. No one would be promised a destination merely for signing a name or placing a coin in a bowl.

recognized member had to complete five services for five different people before Malerc and Kharveck would consider revealing the organization hidden behind the public fellowship.

Kharveck shaped the first realm quests while Malerc refined eligibility. The restored kitchen received a supply ledger that would reward a visitor for sorting provisions according to which arrivals needed them most. The central hall offered repairs, cleaning, and preparation for the next group.

Each task developed useful skills in small amounts. A quartermaster could improve organization. A healer could practice evaluating needs. A porter could gain progress in carrying and distributing supplies. Visitors would return to their hospital bodies with recorded progress and earned favor, while the food, tools, and other realm materials remained behind.

The locked martial hall required something more specific.

[Restoration condition: Return the Keeper’s Standard to the memorial alcove.]

[The standard’s iron crown remains within the living world.]

[Recovery must be completed by a recognized member acting voluntarily.]

[Restoration reward: Hall of Discipline access.]

The system showed Malerc a broken iron fitting buried beneath fallen stone at an abandoned roadside shrine in Corathen. The object had little market value. Its history existed entirely within the world, tied to constructed travelers who had once used the shrine as a gathering place before the surrounding road shifted toward a newer settlement.

The public quest could remain simple. Recover the iron crown, repair it, and place it above a memorial inside the fellowship hall. Members would see a neglected marker restored. The completed quest would also unlock structured martial instruction inside the afterlife realm.

Kharveck studied the image of the buried relic.

”The person who retrieves it becomes our first candidate for the training hall.”

”A candidate. We still judge what he does after receiving the opportunity.” Malerc said.

They placed the request on the fellowship’s small task board. The reward included meals, supplies, and credit toward future services. Nothing on the notice mentioned the afterlife realm or the locked hall.

By the end of the third day, nine people had used the fellowship’s rooms. Four had completed services for someone else. Three had prayed. One had made a contribution large enough to stock the shelves for a week, and another had accepted the journey to the abandoned shrine.

The numbers did not impress Kharveck. The pattern did.

One adventurer returned after receiving help and stayed to carry water. A second brought bandages without being asked. The archer reunited with his party and directed another separated group to Derren the following morning.

In the unnamed realm, the hearth burned more brightly. A second table appeared in the central hall. One of the sealed sleeping rooms opened far enough for an attendant to begin preparing it.

Malerc named the realm the Steady Hearth.

The system accepted the name and recognized the small circle of mortals forming around its living symbol. Death routing remained dormant until someone completed the requirements, but the destination now existed, possessed its own custodians, and had begun choosing who might one day enter.

In Sanctuary, Derren served the evening meal beneath the lamp-and-hands sign. The people at his table considered the Wayfarers’ Fellowship useful, inexpensive, and worth visiting again.

None of them knew who listened when they entered the prayer room.
