Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Twenty days after fleeing Ironcloud, Malrec reached the mountain outlet in a covered coach bearing the crest of a merchant who had never met him.

The wound beneath his ribs was gone. A private healer had closed it on the third night of his journey, inside a country estate owned through two false companies. Since then, Malrec had changed identities four times, crossed the same border at two different checkpoints, and allowed three separate trails to suggest that he had fled toward the coast. The journey required twenty days because disappearing properly required patience.

The coach stopped at an abandoned tollhouse overlooking the eastern mountains. Malrec dismissed the driver with instructions to return after midnight, exchanged his traveling coat for plain mountain clothing stored beneath the rear seat, and continued toward the ravine alone.

He had refused to use any channel the Black Cord or Ironcloud might be monitoring. Reports gathered through his private agents confirmed Renn’s attack on Blackwater Reach, but none revealed what happened inside the mountain. The Deep Forge had been Malrec’s longest active project. He intended to learn whether Helmar had claimed it, damaged it, or exposed it to Ironcloud.

The mountain outlet offered the safest source of that information.

An old company map identified a waterway used to send messages out of the lower mine. A narrow stream emerged from a split in the mountain several miles from Blackwater, passed through a ravine, and joined a larger river beyond the borders of the Ruskell property. Helmar had believed the route would provide a secret means of communication if Blackwater were ever surrounded.

Malrec had designed it to deliver reports directly into his hands.

He descended into the ravine shortly before sunset. The stream ran dark with mineral sediment, and recent rain had raised it over the stones along both banks. Malrec expected to find a sealed message container caught inside an iron grate farther upstream. The compartment built around the grate held field supplies in case the report required him to remain near Blackwater and intervene.

He found blood before he reached the grate.

The first mark stained a pale stone above the waterline. More blood darkened the gravel several yards ahead. A piece of torn armor rested between two rocks, its edges warped by heat and scored by machinery.

Malrec drew a narrow blade and followed the stream.

Helmar lay where the current widened around a cluster of boulders. His ruined armor had caught between the stones and prevented the water from carrying him farther. Both legs were crushed beneath the knees. The artificial arm ended below the elbow, and severe burns covered one side of his face. Blood still seeped from the wound around his remaining eye.

His chest moved once.

Malrec sheathed the blade and stepped into the water.

Helmar did not respond when Malrec pulled him onto the bank. His pulse was weak and irregular, but it remained. The cold water had slowed the bleeding and lowered his body temperature enough to preserve a life that should have ended beneath the mountain.

Malrec opened the emergency cache concealed behind the message grate. He removed a restorative draught, poured part of it between Helmar’s burned lips, and used the remainder across the worst of the open wounds. The potion slowed the bleeding. It could not repair the damage.

He bound Helmar’s legs, wrapped the dwarf in two insulated blankets, and assembled a dragging frame from cut branches and rope stored in the cache. Darkness covered the ravine by the time Malrec began pulling him toward an abandoned hunting shelter farther down the mountain.

The shelter contained a communication plate hidden beneath its stone hearth. Malrec uncovered it, inserted a thin sliver of black crystal, and contacted people the Black Cord had never known he possessed.

He issued three instructions. A healer and two porters would meet him at the hunting shelter before midnight. The surgical workshop would prepare for a critically injured dwarf requiring extensive reconstruction. The artificers assigned to the work would be selected from personnel already cleared for the highest level of secrecy.

Malrec ended the connection and looked toward the unconscious dwarf.

Helmar had lost Blackwater, his family, his title, and the Deep Forge. Those losses made him more useful than he had ever been as a wealthy lord.

The wagon arrived while the sky remained dark.

Weeks passed before Helmar opened his eye.

Consciousness returned through pain and the steady vibration of machinery. He lay on an angled metal table beneath a ceiling crossed by copper pipes. Leather restraints secured his chest and limbs. The air smelled of heated metal, medicinal spirits, and the sharp residue left by healing magic.

Helmar tried to move his artificial hand.

Metal fingers closed against the padded table.

The new arm extended past his elbow and disappeared beneath a reinforced plate fitted around his shoulder. Dark metal formed the outer shell, while narrow lines of amber light moved through the joints whenever his fingers flexed. The hand responded more slowly than the one he lost, but its grip tightened with far greater strength.

He lifted his head.

Both legs had been replaced from above the knee. Layered plates covered the mechanisms, shaped to preserve a dwarf’s proportions while supporting far more weight than flesh and bone. Cables and engraved channels disappeared beneath the bandages around his hips. A faint clicking accompanied every attempted movement.

Something shifted inside the burned side of his face.

His new eye focused.

The room sharpened into unnatural clarity. The artificial eye outlined the nearest tools, measured the distance to the door, and marked three people standing behind a glass partition. Two wore the heavy aprons of artificers. The third wore a familiar face.

Malrec entered the surgical chamber alone.

”How long?” Helmar asked.

His voice emerged raw and uneven.

”Long enough for Ironcloud to finish searching the waterways near Blackwater.” Malrec stopped beside the table. ”They found pieces of your armor and enough blood to support the conclusion they already preferred. Helmar Ruskell is presumed dead.”

Helmar pulled against the restraints. The new legs responded with sudden force, bending one of the metal anchors attached to the table.

Malrec watched without stepping back. ”Your body will require adjustment. The legs can support you, but balance must be learned again. The eye has several functions the artificers were incapable of testing on an unconscious patient.”

”Release me.”

”When you understand what has changed.”

Helmar stared through the glass at the artificers. ”Who paid for this?”

”I did.”

”A Black Cord middle manager does not possess this kind of workshop.”

”That observation arrived later than I expected.”

Malrec raised one hand and passed it slowly across his face. Magic followed his fingers like a transparent veil. The narrow features Helmar recognized broadened. The line of his jaw changed, his skin darkened, and gray spread through hair that had been brown moments earlier. When he spoke again, his voice had deepened enough to belong to another man.

”Malrec was useful inside the Black Cord. Ironcloud and the organization can spend years hunting that face and that voice.”

Helmar’s new eye studied him. The enchantments found no seam, mask, or illusion resting above the skin. The transformation had altered every visible feature.

”Who are you?”

”The man who found the Deep Forge.”

The restraints creaked as Helmar’s new hand closed into a fist.

Malrec continued. ”Before we met, the ring was an old Ruskell possession whose purpose your family had forgotten. You knew nothing about the buried stronghold. You began searching Blackwater because records reached you through an antiquities broker. I selected those records and arranged for you to receive them.”

”You used me to excavate it.”

”You possessed the property, labor, wealth, and willingness required to reach it. I possessed the location and enough knowledge to recognize the key. Our arrangement produced results.”

”You never told me it was a Deep Forge.”

”Ambition made you efficient. Certainty would have made you careless sooner.”

Helmar pulled again. One restraint tore free from the table. The artificers behind the glass retreated, but Malrec remained beside him.

”Renn has my forge.”

”Renn controls the entrance and possesses the ring. Ironcloud’s engineers will spend years determining how much of the forge can be operated safely. Your attempt gave them proof that the machinery still functions.”

”You planned for me to fail.”

”I planned to learn from either result. If you secured the forge, its production would have advanced my work. Your defeat revealed the constructs, the control system, and the response produced by an improper activation. I would have preferred the metal, but the information retains value.”

Helmar’s anger shifted as he considered the answer. Malrec had treated the struggle for Blackwater as one move inside a larger design. The assassination contracts, the hidden excavation, and Helmar’s claim to ultimate power had all served someone who never placed his own name on the property.

”Why save me?”

Malrec rested one hand on the bent restraint. ”Lord Helmar required status, wealth, and family recognition. Every decision had to preserve the position he believed made him powerful. The dwarf pulled from that stream possesses freedom Helmar never understood.”

”You expect obedience.”

”I expect you to recognize the difference between leading three hundred purchased warriors and shaping events across nations. You served as my pawn because that was the limit of your usefulness. I rebuilt you because you have earned the opportunity to become something greater.”

Malrec released the remaining restraints.

Helmar sat upright. The artificial eye adjusted immediately, but the room tilted when he moved his new legs over the side of the table. His metal feet struck the floor hard enough to dent the wooden covering laid above the stone.

He attempted to stand.

The first effort carried too much force through one leg and sent him against the table. On the second, he distributed his weight more carefully. The mechanisms beneath the armor corrected around him. He rose until he stood several inches taller than before, supported by a frame capable of carrying armor his former body could never have moved.

Malrec watched him take three uneven steps.

”Helmar Ruskell cannot leave this workshop.” Malrec placed a metal identity plate on the table. ”The name belongs to a wanted murderer whose face is known throughout Ironcloud. From this moment forward, you are Kharvek.”

Helmar picked up the plate. The etched description matched the scarred face reflected in the dark glass beside the surgical room. Kharvek possessed no family name, property, or official history.

”You took everything that remained of me.”

”Rod’s party and Renn took those things. I gave you the means to answer them when the time is right.”

Kharvek turned toward the artificers behind the partition. They lowered their eyes when his new gaze settled upon them.

”What do you call the position you are offering?”

”Apprentice, until you learn enough to deserve another title. You will operate beneath my direction, use the identity I provide, and abandon the habits that allowed your enemies to predict you. In return, I will teach you how power survives after titles and armies disappear.”

Kharvek crossed the room again. His steps became smoother as the mechanisms adapted to his weight. When he reached the far wall, he drove his artificial fist into a reinforced testing plate. The impact folded the metal inward.

”Rod Titters brought one hundred adventurers to Blackwater.” Kharvek turned from the damaged plate. ”My warriors killed some of them more than once, and they returned through the graveyard. Every exchange reduced my force while theirs recovered.”

”The resurrection system belongs to the Crag Mountain dungeon.”

”The dungeon provides the resurrection. The adventurers decide whom they serve after they return. Rod persuaded them with contracts, rewards, and promises of employment. Someone else could bind them with something stronger.”

Malrec’s altered face revealed the first hint of interest. He didn’t think Helmar was capable of recognizing his failures so quickly. That was surprising. It seemed that Kharvek would be capable of things that Helmar never was.

”What would you offer people who can purchase another life with dungeon coins?” Malrec asked, giving the man before him a test.

”Purpose. Advancement. Enemies they already want to blame for their failures. Immortality changes what people fear, but it does not change their need to belong to something. Give them a cause that treats resurrection as proof of favor, and some will die for it as often as we require.”

”You are proposing a religion.”

”A loyal force. The name used to gather it matters less than what its members believe.”

Malrec considered the idea in silence. The Sanctuary drew adventurers from several nations, trained abilities most people never unlocked, and returned the dead through its graveyards. Rod had demonstrated how quickly those advantages could turn ordinary recruits into a force capable of breaking a fortified holding.

Kharvek understood the lesson because he had been crushed beneath it.

”We will begin with individuals.” Malrec’s deeper voice filled the chamber. ”The ambitious, the resentful, and those who believe the world has denied them the power they deserve. A movement built too quickly attracts attention before loyalty becomes useful.”

”And the Deep Forge?”

”Renn will guard it for us while Ironcloud pays to excavate and repair it. Their engineers will discover which systems function, which defenses remain, and how the Adamant Celestial Iron can be produced. When we return, they will have completed the dangerous work. Besides... there are many creations in this world that are just as interesting as the Deep Forge.”

Kharvek looked at his reflection again. Half of Helmar’s face remained beneath the scars, but the new eye glowed amber inside the ruined socket. Dark metal replaced the limbs destroyed inside the forge. The identity plate in his hand gave the body a name its enemies had never heard.

”What happens now?”

Malrec walked to the door and placed his hand against the locking plate. ”Now you learn to serve without being seen. Once you can do that, we will decide who deserves to see you again.”

The door opened onto a training chamber built beneath the workshop. Weapons, armor, and mechanical tools waited along its walls.

Kharvek followed his new master inside.
