Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Five Knots waited until every member was awake before discussing what had happened.

Hospital attendants checked their names, confirmed that each restored body had remained in its bed for the full twelve hours, and allowed them to dress. The stiffness in their muscles came from lying still. The wounds from the Dwarven Airship level no longer existed.

Tessa requested a private recovery room before anyone could overhear enough unfamiliar words to begin asking questions. The party gathered around a narrow table and shared the portions of their system records connected to the afterlives.

They began with proof that they had not experienced the same place.

Tessa showed them the Sea of Lanterns. Kesh showed the Endless Library. Belda’s record named Valhalla, while Min and Orin carried confirmations from the Forge Beyond the Flame and the Field of Reeds.

Each record included the reason that destination had accepted its visitor. The qualifications were based on choices made before death and completed by their conduct during the failed challenge.

The destinations had also preserved different kinds of progress. Tessa’s record included practice gained while guiding the lantern boats through moving fog. Kesh had improved a route-comparison technique he already used when reconciling charts. Belda’s defensive trial had advanced her ability to hold a narrow position. Min and Orin had both received progress tied to their established repair work rather than unrelated combat skills.

The results made the selection process clearer. The afterlives had not assigned convenient rewards to five dead adventurers. Each realm had recognized conduct the member had already demonstrated, then offered work related to the same strengths. The elite challenge had provided the final circumstances, but none of them treated dying as a strategy worth repeating.

They moved to the retained party quest.

Each member possessed one completed sub-objective and one part of a five-piece passage mark. The records were not objects they could place on the table. When shared together, however, the five fragments formed the same descending-gate symbol Min had assembled in the forge.

Kesh placed his catalog line beneath it.

[Where still water drinks no sky, five marked travelers may find the road beneath the dead.]

Tessa’s record showed the lantern brightening over water with no reflected sky. Orin had found black reeds beside a channel that disappeared beneath stone. Belda’s funerary mark matched the center of the gate. Min’s pattern established the order in which the fragments had to be presented.

The quest responded when all five records were shared.

[The Road Beneath Still Water]

[Locate the Gravewater Descent while alive.]

[Present all five earned passage marks.]

[Reach the ferryman.]

[The living entrance to each afterlife destination is independent. Progress in this quest reveals no route into the Sea of Lanterns, Endless Library, Valhalla, Forge Beyond the Flame, or Field of Reeds.]

No map appeared. The quest did not identify the River Styx or explain what the ferryman would demand. It gave them a name, several physical clues, and a requirement that all five mark holders arrive alive.

Focusing on the final requirement produced another notice.

[Living entrants cross the threshold physically.]

[Afterlife-form protections do not apply.]

[Death and revival follow the ordinary rules of the location in which death occurs.]

The message ended any possibility of treating the expedition as an extension of the safe tasks they had completed while their bodies slept in the hospital. If they found the entrance, their actual bodies would cross it with their equipment. Injuries would remain injuries, and the quest offered no promise that failure would return the party together.

The five marks were bound to the people who had earned them. Sending scouts ahead to activate the route was impossible, and leaving one member behind would prevent the entrance from recognizing the complete pattern. They would have to balance caution against the fact that all five were required.

Kesh treated Gravewater as a description rather than a place already named on a map. The black reeds narrowed the search only if the same growth existed outside the Field of Reeds, but the requirement to locate a living entrance meant that at least part of the description had to exist in Corathen.

They left the hospital without discussing the destination in public. The Sixth Knot remained secured in Corathen, along with the maps, route logs, and records accumulated during the flights that had made them known as an adventurer flying team.

They reached the airship later that morning and closed the crew cabin before opening their charts.

Kesh did not search for symbols or assume that every ruin concealed a dungeon mechanism. He began with water.

Tessa’s clue required a place where water could not reflect the sky. Orin’s required a stream or channel that passed beneath stone. Those details favored caverns, covered ravines, and ruins built above underground water. Black reeds reduced the possibilities further, although several flight records used different names for the same dark marsh growth.

The Five Knots had crossed much of Corathen by air. Most of their records concerned weather, safe landing sites, dangerous creatures, and settlements capable of repairing or supplying an airship. Kesh compared those practical notes with older maps purchased in Caldris and reports from adventurers who had explored away from the established roads.

The first search produced more than a dozen possible underground waterways. Most failed immediately. Several reflected open sky before entering shallow caves. Two lay beneath settlements and had been mapped from end to end. One disappeared into a ravine with pale reeds but no ruins or worked stone. Another matched the water and vegetation but stood in a region the Five Knots had crossed often enough to know that the supposed cavern was only a shadowed cut between cliffs.

Kesh did not force any of them to fit. He removed each failed location and kept searching.

One location survived every comparison.

A ruined stone complex stood above a partially explored cavern system. The place was known well enough to appear on regional maps, but it had never become important. Adventurers occasionally used the ruins as a stopping point. A stream entered the caverns along the northern wall and did not emerge anywhere shown on the surface charts.

One of the Five Knots’ earlier flight logs mentioned a strip of black vegetation along a sinkhole near the ruins.

The same log contained a warning about air currents sinking unexpectedly above the site. Tessa remembered correcting for them during a supply flight. At the time, Kesh had suggested that a large underground opening might be drawing cooler air through cracks in the stone. The observation had mattered only as a flight hazard. Combined with the afterlife clues, it supported the existence of a deeper cavern that surface explorers had missed.

Kesh placed the records beside Orin’s shared image.

”The plants may not be identical, but the location gives us everything else.” Kesh said.

”How far from a safe landing?” Belda asked.

Tessa measured the distance on the flight chart.

”Close enough to carry equipment. Far enough that anyone in the ruins will not have access to the ship.” Tessa said.

They treated the journey as an expedition rather than a second attempt to die. Belda inspected the rigging. Min checked the engines and the replacement parts they carried. Orin examined the hull and prepared anchors suited for stone. Kesh copied the relevant maps so the originals could remain aboard. Tessa arranged supplies and filed a route notice that named their intended region without explaining the afterlife quest.

They also planned for the ship to remain unattended. The landing site Tessa selected was separated from the ruins by rough ground that discouraged casual visitors. Orin prepared physical locks for the control surfaces, and Min removed two components the engines could not start without. A sealed message aboard named the party’s route and expected return window in case another crew eventually had to recover The Sixth Knot.

Belda added enough rope for a descent much deeper than the known maps suggested. Kesh marked three withdrawal points between the landing site and the cavern entrance. If the clues proved false, they would return with better information instead of continuing until the expedition became another defeat.

None of them purchased equipment on the assumption that death would solve a mistake. They carried food, rope, light, climbing tools, and enough weapons to survive an unexplored cavern.

Max saw the party quest when it survived their return.

He examined it in the core room while the Five Knots compared their records in private. The quest had done more than distribute five small objectives. It had recognized a party divided among separate afterlives, preserved their shared progress, and pointed them toward one destination’s living entrance without exposing any of the others.

Anna confirmed that the quest had withheld the entrance’s location. Quin verified that the passage marks remained bound to the people who had earned them. Other adventurers could eventually search for the site, but copying the Five Knots’ pattern would not grant them the party’s qualification.

Max could have opened a clearer route, added a marker to their maps, or sent an attendant to explain the clues. He did none of those things. A living entrance had value because adventurers could discover it through the systems already attached to the afterlives. Turning the expedition into a staff-directed test would prove only that people could follow his instructions.

He also left the route traversable. The Five Knots had earned a credible lead. If they interpreted it correctly and arrived prepared, the entrance would not reject them because he wanted a longer search.

Anna examined the five separate destination records before closing her view of the quest. The failed elite challenge had created the circumstances, but it had not manufactured their qualifications. If any member had lacked an earned destination, the party-linked quest would never have assembled all five marks.

The private review ended there. No announcement appeared over Sanctuary. No public notice identified the Gravewater Descent. The quest belonged to the party that had accepted and completed its first five objectives.

In Corathen, The Sixth Knot rose from its berth.

Tessa guided the airship toward open sky. Min monitored the engines. Belda worked the rigging. Orin listened for strain in the hull, and Kesh fixed their course toward the ruins above the disappearing stream.
