Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Captain Ressa Kale entered Crag Mountain through the stables.

No army marched behind her. The Ravelle delegation consisted of five officials, two uniformed guards, and the modest luggage required for a diplomatic visit. Every weapon and piece of armor was openly carried. The stable workers treated them like any other armed travelers arriving at the mountain.

That ordinary reception unsettled Kale more than hostility would have.

Not long ago, she had led forces through an entrance created for an invasion. The route offered no market, no greeting, and no choice except forward or retreat. Every level beyond it had been designed to resist the army trying to reach the core.

Now a gnome directed the delegation toward a stone portal beside families, merchants, and adventuring parties.

”Destination?” The gnome asked.

”Sanctuary.” Kale said.

The gnome marked the group and waved them through.

They stepped into a city.

Sunlight filled Sanctuary beneath an open blue sky. Streets spread beyond the arrival plaza. Shops occupied stone buildings around gardens, training halls, inns, and public squares. Adventurers moved beside gnomes, dwarves, orcs, elves, and creatures Kale could not identify. No one stopped when the Ravelle guards emerged carrying weapons.

Orvek Dorne turned slowly. His assignment concerned trade, but for several seconds he forgot to conceal his amazement.

”This was here?” He asked.

”Not on our route.” Varik Senn answered.

The adventurer had participated in the invasion. He studied the Sanctuary with the expression of a man comparing it against a place that shared none of its features.

”The levels we crossed were real.” Kale said. ”This is also real.”

Edrin Salve adjusted the case containing the delegation’s documents. ”A distinction Ravelle will need to understand.”

Tomas Newl waited near the edge of the plaza. He wore traveling clothes rather than a Ravelle uniform, but Kale recognized him immediately. She had sent him to learn what existed beyond the invasion route. His reports had described Sanctuary in detail.

They had not conveyed its scale.

”Captain.” Tomas said.

”You look healthier than when you left.”

”I have not been sleeping in an army camp.”

He greeted the others and joined the delegation without attempting to take command. Two gnomes assigned to guide them waited nearby. Max had not filled the plaza with guards or arranged a public spectacle.

Their meeting was scheduled for later in the day. Tomas suggested they walk rather than go directly to an office.

”The Dungeon Master agreed.” He said. ”He thought you should see the Sanctuary before speaking with him.”

”Is that intended to influence us?” Edrin asked.

”Yes.” Tomas replied. ”He wants Ravelle to send people here. Hiding the useful parts would be a poor way to accomplish that.”

The direct answer prevented suspicion from becoming an argument.

They passed the market first. Orvek slowed at stalls selling Corathian grain, dwarven tools, monster materials, enchanted household goods, and supplies intended for dungeon expeditions. Prices were posted openly. Merchants from outside the dungeon rented space beside residents.

”Tariffs?” Orvek asked their guide.

The gnome explained the ordinary market fees and wholesale options. He did not offer Ravelle a special arrangement or threaten a penalty for refusing one.

Olan Merrow became interested when they reached the training district. He represented several Ravelle adventuring interests and had doubted Tomas’s reports about system instruction. Through open doors, he saw trainers guiding students through movements while system prompts tracked their progress.

”Every class?” Olan asked.

”The dungeon’s trainers can provide instruction across the full system range.” Tomas said.

”And Ravelle citizens can purchase lessons?”

”Anyone who follows Sanctuary rules and pays the same rate.”

Edrin wrote the answer down.

The delegation continued past lodging houses, the Arena entrance, portal stations, and gardens where children played within sight of armed adventurers. Varik repeatedly looked for the hidden division between safe public territory and the dungeon that had destroyed Ravelle’s army.

”It does not feel like the same place.” He said.

One of the Ravelle guards answered. ”It was not intended to.”

That was the simplest explanation. During the challenge, the dungeon had been in defense mode. Ravelle saw defenses because it arrived as an invading force. Today it arrived through the entrance Max built for visitors.

No one needed the mechanics explained beyond that.

Max met them beside a terrace overlooking the central district. He wore a suit rather than armor. Tomas introduced him even though every delegate knew his name.

”Captain Kale.” Max said. ”Welcome to Sanctuary.”

Kale accepted his hand. ”Thank you for receiving us.”

Max greeted each delegate and the two guards. He did not ask the guards to disarm or pretend they could threaten him.

They walked while they spoke.

Max showed them a portal hall connecting public destinations, then an observation point above the Arena. Olan asked practical questions about lessons and instance access. Orvek asked how Ravelle merchants could establish contacts. Edrin confirmed that Ravelle visitors would operate under the same public rules as everyone else.

There was almost nothing to negotiate.

Max wanted more people using the dungeon. Ravelle wanted access to training, trade, instances, and the routes beyond Sanctuary. Neither side demanded exclusivity, military passage, or control over the other.

That simplicity did not remove the reason Kale had come personally.

She waited until the group reached a quieter garden. Water ran through shallow channels between flowering trees. The delegates could speak without making the discussion a public performance.

”There is a fear in Ravelle that I need to address directly.” Kale said.

Max stopped beside the water. ”Go ahead.”

”Some believe the invitation is revenge. That you want Ravelle’s people inside the dungeon where you can kill them for what happened during the invasion.”

Orvek looked uncomfortable. Olan did not. Both had heard the claim often enough that avoiding it would accomplish nothing.

Max considered the concern before answering. ”If I wanted revenge, inviting individual merchants and adventurers would be an inefficient way to pursue it.”

Kale waited.

”A higher power created the entrance in Ravelle and offered the quest reward. I know your city did not trigger the invasion. Ravelle responded to an opportunity it did not understand.”

”We still entered.” Kale said.

”Yes. And my dungeon defended itself. The challenge ended. I do not blame every person in Ravelle for a decision made under circumstances none of us created.”

Varik watched him closely. ”You lost people.”

”They returned.”

Max’s answer did not dismiss the battle. It placed it where he believed it belonged: in a completed test imposed by something more powerful than either side.

”I earn DP when people spend time in my dungeon.” He continued. ”Visitors train, trade, use the public levels, travel into Corathen, and support businesses. Killing them for a grudge would work against everything I am building.”

Orvek understood that argument better than reassurance. ”You want customers.”

”Residents, customers, adventurers, merchants, travelers. I want activity. If I need to, I will gladly create a retirement community for people to sit around in.”

Kale looked across the garden toward the crowded street. The dungeon Max intended outsiders to see was not harmless. Its public levels contained monsters and risk. Corathen was an entire country with dangers of its own. But danger offered with known rules was different from an ambush disguised as welcome.

”Then Ravelle will provide accurate information about entry and public access to its citizens.” She said. ”We will make clear that our people are welcomed under the same rules as other visitors.”

”That works for me.” Max said with a smile.

Edrin asked whether Max wanted a formal written statement. Max agreed because Ravelle’s officials needed something they could present at home, not because the agreement required pages of conditions. Edrin would prepare a short version before the delegation left.

Kale continued with the warning she considered equally important. ”Welcoming Ravelle does not mean everyone in Ravelle will behave intelligently. Ambitious people may still make moves against your core. Some will believe our army failed because it was poorly led rather than because the dungeon was beyond us.”

Max did not appear surprised. ”People from other places have already tried.”

”Tomas mentioned arrests.”

”A small group of core hunters. They accomplished less than your army.”

Kale heard confidence without bravado. Hundreds of thousands had entered during the challenge and failed. A secret group wandering through public districts posed no comparable threat.

”You are not concerned?” she asked.

”I am improving security. I am not going to treat every visitor as a possible invasion because a few stupid people exist.”

That answer mattered. Ravelle’s citizens could not build trade or trust inside a dungeon that regarded them as enemies waiting for an excuse.

The conversation moved on.

Tomas led them toward one of the training halls. Olan had enough questions to occupy the remaining afternoon. Orvek wanted to meet merchants already moving goods between Corathen and Sanctuary. Varik wanted to enter one of the public levels under normal conditions and see how different it was from the defensive route.

Kale intended to do all three.

The invasion had shown Ravelle what Crag Mountain became when attacked.

The delegation’s work was to understand what it offered when entered through the proper door.

Their tour continued into the evening. Olan observed a system lesson long enough to see the student receive a tracked progression prompt. Orvek spoke with a Ravelle merchant who had arrived independently weeks earlier and discovered that the man’s greatest complaint concerned the price of lodging near the busiest market.

”No disappearances?” Orvek asked him.

”The only thing disappearing are the cheap rooms.” The merchant said.

The answer did more for the delegation than another assurance from Max.

Varik selected the Fey Nights instance the next day. He wanted to enter with the two guards and one local guide, not to prove the invasion force could have succeeded but to understand what ordinary adventurers experienced. Max approved without offering to tell him the solutions.

Kale watched residents greet Max as he passed. Some bowed. Others simply moved aside or raised a hand. He carried authority without requiring every street to stop for him.

At dinner, the delegation reviewed what their report needed to contain. Safe public entry did not mean every dungeon level was safe. Ravelle should warn inexperienced visitors to prepare properly and hire guides where needed. Merchants needed accurate portal routes. Adventurers needed to understand that training access did not guarantee instant mastery.

Those were useful cautions, not reasons to stay away.

Edrin reduced the formal agreement to a page. Ravelle would distribute accurate public-access information and recognize Sanctuary’s rules. Max would welcome Ravelle citizens under the same terms as other visitors. Trade and training arrangements could be made by the individuals and organizations using them.

Kale read it and removed a sentence promising that Ravelle would prevent every future hostile act by its citizens.

”No city can promise that.” She said. ”We can punish crimes and refuse official support. We cannot guarantee stupidity disappears.”

Max agreed.

The easy correction reinforced what Kale had begun to understand. Max did not expect Ravelle to grovel, surrender authority, or prove innocence for an invasion he knew had been imposed. He wanted people to use the dungeon and behave under its rules.

The challenge for Kale would begin after she returned home. She had to describe a powerful Dungeon Master who neither feared Ravelle nor sought revenge against it. Some officials would find that harder to accept than hostility because it denied them a familiar conflict.

The streets outside remained busy long after dark. Kale stood at the lodging window and watched another caravan enter Sanctuary.

Ravelle had once sent an army through the entrance.

Its next arrivals would come carrying coin, contracts, and questions.
