Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Valhalla’s first sunrise revealed three problems before the light reached the roof of the hall.

The first was that Max had made the battlefield too flat. From the hall it looked impressive, a broad sweep of green beneath snowcapped mountains, but fighters standing on the field could see every opponent and every objective. There were no gullies to defend, ridges to capture, streams to cross, or woods capable of concealing an ambush.

The second problem was the feast.

Anna had recruited volunteers from Sanctuary to test the food, and they had consumed enough roasted meat to confirm that an endless banquet became less appealing when every table served variations of the same thing.

The third problem was that two volunteers had spent an hour arguing about whether dying bravely with a bow entitled someone to enter a hall everyone associated with close combat.

Max solved the third problem first.

”Valhalla does not care what weapon you use.” He told them. ”It cares why you kept fighting.”

One volunteer lifted his bow. ”What if I kill something from so far away that I am never in danger?”

”Then the distance is relevant. The bow is not.”

”What if the creature could reach me but failed?”

”The system evaluates the danger you accepted, not whether your enemy was competent.”

”But what if—”

”If you devote this much effort to finding a loophole while you are dying, you probably are not concentrating on the brave act.”

Anna dismissed the volunteers before they could produce more examples.

Max reshaped the field. Hills rose. A river cut through the center and divided around a rocky island. Pine woods spread along the western edge, while the eastern ground became broken stone suited to smaller formations. He added movable fortifications so the field could support sieges without permanently favoring one side.

The battles would not repeat on a schedule. Guides, trainers, and visitors could propose objectives. The system would balance willing participants according to ability and provide temporary equipment when a scenario required it. No one would be forced to participate, and no one would receive progress for standing safely at the rear while others fought.

Anna handled the hall.

She replaced half the meat with breads, stews, cheeses, vegetables, fruit, fish, and dishes drawn from different parts of the dungeon. Smaller rooms branched from the main hall for visitors who disliked crowds. One contained game tables. Another allowed musicians to compete without being drowned out by thousands of conversations. A third provided quiet benches around a central fire.

”It is supposed to be a warrior’s feast.” Max objected when she found a tray of pastries.

”Warriors can eat pastries.” Anna said. ”Anyone who disagrees may challenge the baker.”

The baker was a retired adventurer with arms thicker than Anna’s waist. No one challenged him.

Once Valhalla functioned, Max used its structure to establish the protections shared by every afterlife. Each realm existed in its own dimensional space. None touched another. A forest grown in the Summerland could not spread into the Field of Reeds. A river in the underworld could not flow beneath Valhalla. Their connections existed through controlled routes, not neighboring borders.

Every realm received at least one clear exit. A visitor who used it returned to Sanctuary with the same restored body that had entered the afterlife. The twelve-hour clock continued wherever he went. Leaving did not create a penalty, but it closed the death-route that had admitted him. The afterlife was an opportunity, not a room an adventurer could enter and leave like an ordinary instance.

Max then began the more difficult task of making the realms distinct.

Elysium received warm fields, groves, athletic grounds, theaters, workshops, and villas that could host temporary communities. Its challenges rewarded excellence joined with service. A skilled singer might be asked to restore courage to a village troubled by nightmares. A runner might carry a message across a landscape that changed whenever he chose the easiest road. A celebrated warrior could discover that the local judge cared more about whether he trained weaker visitors than how many contests he won.

The Field of Reeds began beside a broad river. Irrigation channels divided rich soil into farms, gardens, and orchards. Visitors could build homes, repair boats, raise crops, and learn trades from masters who judged completed work instead of levels. Seasonal festivals compressed long agricultural cycles into hours without making the labor meaningless. A farmer could test a new skill across an entire harvest before returning to Sanctuary the same day.

Max did not make the crops valuable outside the realm. Otherwise adventurers would deliberately die to harvest rare ingredients. What they carried home was knowledge, skill progression, quest rewards, and occasionally an item earned through something more demanding than ordinary labor.

The Summerland grew around an enormous tree whose branches held villages at different heights. Its inhabitants cared for wounded beasts, restored damaged habitats, and followed paths through memories made physical. Healers could practice under conditions that responded to their decisions. Druids could encounter species unavailable elsewhere in the dungeon. Caretakers who had never fought anything stronger than exhaustion could receive an afterlife suited to them.

Anna watched small winged guides carry baskets between the branches. ”This one needs predators.”

”It has predators.”

”I have not seen any.”

”That means they are doing well.”

Max moved on before she could improve the ecosystem with armored wolves.

The celestial court became a city of white walls, red pillars, tiled roofs, gardens, archives, and administrative halls. Max remembered only fragments of the mythologies that inspired it, so he avoided assigning the names of real gods to officials he was creating himself. Visitors advanced by accepting offices, resolving disputes, passing examinations, and exposing corruption built into controlled storylines.

Mira examined the first examination scroll. ”You made an afterlife where people can be assigned paperwork.”

”Some people enjoy organization.”

”You do not.”

”That is why I recognize it as a test.”

The Forge Beyond the Flame became a chain of workshops surrounding a star-bright furnace. Crafters could request impossible materials, but those materials existed only inside the realm. The purpose was experimentation. A smith could learn how an unfamiliar metal responded without bringing an unlimited supply back to the dungeon. Rare instructors offered techniques only after visitors completed commissions under strict limitations.

The Endless Library resisted Max’s first design. He had attempted to fill its shelves with every book already available in his dungeon, but the result was only a larger archive. Mira suggested that the library should contain questions as well as answers.

Max replaced its deepest shelves with sealed collections. Each collection required the visitor to prove what he intended to do with the knowledge. Scholars could receive research quests, debate constructed experts, recover missing pages from dangerous wings, or discover that the book they wanted did not exist until they wrote part of it themselves.

The Sea of Lanterns offered islands beneath a permanent night sky. Each visitor received a small vessel and a lantern whose flame responded to curiosity. Familiar routes remained dark. Sailing toward something genuinely unknown brightened the flame and revealed new islands. Explorers who followed other people’s maps could reach safe ports, but the rarest opportunities appeared only to those willing to leave charted waters.

The Moonlit Hunt tested trackers without reducing every challenge to killing. Some quarry had to be captured. Some had to be observed without being disturbed. Some were wounded creatures that led hunters through dangerous territory before permitting themselves to be helped. A hunter who slaughtered everything he found would quickly discover that the realm stopped offering worthy prey.

Max built quieter destinations as well: a Hearth of Ancestors, a Garden of Returning Seasons, a City of Bells, a Dreaming Desert, and an island monastery above a sea of clouds. He gave each one a distinct purpose before adding decoration. A beautiful realm without meaningful choices would become a waiting room with better scenery.

The darker afterlives required greater care.

The underworld received a black river, a walled city, caverns, courts, markets, prisons, and roads leading into regions Max had not yet developed. It borrowed imagery from several stories Max remembered, but its rules belonged to the dungeon. The judges were constructed officials, not stolen gods. Their sentences created quests, restrictions, debts, and opportunities for restitution.

Someone who had betrayed companions might be required to guide vulnerable travelers through a dangerous region without abandoning them. A thief could be sent to recover property from creatures that treated ownership as a weapon. A murderer might face harsher trials, but Max refused to create endless torture. Even punishment needed an objective.

”What if they refuse?” Anna asked.

”They can leave.”

”That seems generous.”

”The afterlife is not their permanent fate. They are alive again. If they leave, they lose access and return to Sanctuary with whatever reputation they earned here. Refusing can also close quests, shops, and trainers to them.”

”So the punishment is missing something useful.”

”For adventurers, that may be worse than fire.”

The cold realm of oathbreakers used a different structure. Visitors arrived carrying a visible chain for every oath the system judged both freely made and knowingly broken. The chains did not prevent them from leaving. They changed the realm’s response. Bridges collapsed beneath excessive weight. Doors remained shut. Creatures heard the chains approaching. Visitors could remove them only by completing acts that reflected the promises they had abandoned.

Max tested the system against casual statements and rejected thousands of false oaths. Promising to meet someone for lunch could not condemn an adventurer to a frozen wasteland. The oath needed intent, understanding, and meaningful reliance from another person.

The Mountain of Burdens made guilt physical but allowed visitors to decide what they carried. A person could deny everything and walk away. Someone who accepted a burden could climb, encounter teachers and trials, and leave it at a shrine only after understanding what it represented.

By the time the twenty-fifth realm possessed a stable foundation, the interface looked less like a revival route and more like a tree whose branches ended in separate worlds.

Max did not connect it.

Destination rules still needed testing. He created simulated lives and deaths, then watched the system assign them. A warrior who died defending strangers went to Valhalla. A healer killed while protecting patients reached the Summerland. A corrupt official who sacrificed himself to save the town he had exploited qualified for three different destinations.

The system attempted to select the one with the strongest match.

Max stopped it.

”People are not tidy enough for one correct answer,” he said.

Mira looked over the conflicting qualifications. ”Let them choose among the places they earn.”

That solution created another problem. A dying adventurer could not be expected to read twenty-five descriptions while a battle continued around his restored body. Max placed the choice after restoration but before arrival. Eligible visitors would receive a short selection of matched destinations and could accept one. Anyone who refused, delayed, or disliked every option would appear in Sanctuary’s hospital as before.

For the first public test, however, Max limited the selection. He wanted one unmistakable arrival to prove the system worked before thousands of adventurers began comparing menus.

Valhalla would receive the first qualified warrior.

Elsewhere in the dungeon, Malerc felt the new branches take shape.

He could not see their interiors, but he understood what Max was building. Kharveck listened while Malerc described a future in which an organization offered its members a destination unavailable to outsiders: not a place of obvious darkness, but a useful refuge with teachers, services, and quests.

”If it looks like a cult, they will avoid it.” Kharveck said.

”Then it will look like a fellowship.” Malerc replied. ”We will not ask them to worship us. We will give them reasons to pray without telling them who hears.”

They made no announcement. They recruited no one. For now, Malerc only began designing the kind of afterlife ordinary adventurers might willingly choose.
