Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The report that reached the Provisional Capital took nine days to climb the chain of command, which, by the standards of a government still rebuilding itself out of the apocalypse’s wreckage, counted as impressively fast.

It started as a field bulletin from Priya Malhotra’s own guild registry — a routine filing, technically, required of any hunter squad reporting a significant regional event. She’d kept it deliberately clinical, sticking to verifiable facts: an unregistered individual, designation unknown, had neutralized an SSS-rank Regional Calamity in under four minutes, unassisted, with no recorded casualties or collateral damage beyond the immediate engagement zone. She’d left out the trench. She’d left out the vending machine. She’d left out, very deliberately, anything that might read as embellishment even though every word of it was true.

It didn’t matter. The bare facts alone were enough to detonate through every level of the capital’s fragile new bureaucracy.

”Read that again,” Director-General Vasant Rao said, not looking up from the report spread across his desk, in the reinforced underground chamber that now served as the seat of what remained of the central government.

His aide, a nervous young analyst named Ishaan, cleared his throat. ”Sir, the Calamity clear time is listed as three minutes, forty-seven seconds. Solo. The system’s own broadcast confirms it — first SSS-rank clear in recorded history.”

”And nobody knows who did it.”

”The identity is privacy-protected by default, sir. But—” Ishaan hesitated, sliding a second folder across the desk, thicker than the first. ”There’s a secondary pattern. Local intelligence from Sector 4 and the surrounding districts. An unregistered individual, first flagged three weeks ago, matching a consistent profile — inhuman strength, an S-rank weapon no one else can lift, a defensive field protecting an entire residential block, and a title that appeared briefly on the regional threat index before the system stopped updating it entirely.”

Rao finally looked up. ”Stopped updating it.”

”The system gave up trying to rank him, sir. Forty-seven failed classification attempts, according to the leaked log from Sector 4’s monitoring station. He’s currently listed as ’Unemployed.’”

Rao sat back slowly in his chair, absorbing that with the particular stillness of a man who’d spent thirty years in government service and had genuinely never encountered a briefing quite like this one.

”An unregistered civilian,” he said, ”solos a Calamity the entire continent should have needed months and thousands of lives to even approach, and the system’s official classification for him is unemployed.”

”Yes, sir.”

”Get me everything we have. Location, known associates, guild contacts — everything.”

The council session that followed ran nearly six hours, and it split, almost immediately, into the same two camps that had divided every serious power-anomaly discussion since the apocalypse began.

”This is an opportunity,” argued Minister Bhargava, leaning forward across the long conference table. ”Do you understand what a single individual with this capability represents? We could end the wave crisis entirely. Secure every major gate zone in the region. This is the single greatest strategic asset to emerge since the sky turned red.”

”Or the single greatest threat,” countered General Iyer, arms crossed. ”An unregistered, unaffiliated individual with power exceeding our entire combined military capacity, who has shown no interest in cooperating with any existing authority structure. We don’t know his motivations. We don’t know his loyalties. We don’t even know if he has loyalties beyond himself.”

”He’s been protecting civilians,” Bhargava shot back. ”Sheltering hundreds of refugees. That’s not the profile of a threat.”

”That’s the profile of someone building a power base,” Iyer said flatly. ”Whether he intends to or not.”

Rao let the argument run its course, listening more than speaking, the way he’d learned to manage a council perpetually one bad decision away from collapsing into infighting. When the room finally quieted, exhausted, he spoke.

”We don’t have enough information to decide anything,” he said. ”Which means the correct first step isn’t recruitment, and it isn’t containment. It’s contact.” He turned to Ishaan. ”Draft a formal envoy. Diplomatic tier, not military. I want someone who can walk in there, ask reasonable questions, and walk out again without triggering whatever it was that turned three miles of earth into a trench.”

”Who would you send, sir?”

Rao considered the question for a long moment, thinking of the reports he’d already read twice — the vending machine, the failed robbery, the refusal of every recruitment offer from three separate guilds, the sanctuary that now sheltered hundreds of desperate survivors for nothing in return.

”Someone senior enough to be taken seriously,” he said finally, ”and smart enough not to make demands. Send Undersecretary Kapoor.”

Meera Kapoor received the assignment two days later, and found herself, for the second time in a month, walking back toward the same unremarkable residential building she’d first encountered while leading her own devastated squad out of the Sunken Vein.

The building looked different this time. The last time she’d been anywhere near it, it had been an ordinary apartment block with rumors attached. Now it stood behind an invisible but unmistakable pressure boundary, courtyard packed with tents and makeshift shelters, hundreds of people moving through it with a settled, unhurried calm that felt almost jarring against the backdrop of a still-burning apocalypse.

She found Suresh at the courtyard entrance, clipboard in hand, and presented her credentials with the formal precision of someone who’d rehearsed the introduction on the way over.

”Meera Kapoor, Undersecretary for Regional Affairs, representing the Provisional Central Government. I’m here on behalf of Director-General Rao to request an audience with the resident of Room 404.”

Suresh looked at her credentials, then back up at her face, with an expression that carried the specific, weary amusement of a man who’d fielded a great many official visitors over the past two weeks.

”He’s probably napping,” Suresh said. ”I’ll check. No promises.”

Meera blinked. ”This is a formal envoy from the central government.”

”I understand that, ma’am.” Suresh set down his clipboard with a small sigh. ”But he really does nap most afternoons. It’s not personal. Give me a moment.”

He disappeared up the stairwell, leaving Meera standing in the courtyard, surrounded by the quiet, functioning proof of exactly what this ”unregistered anomaly” had built without any government oversight or approval at all — and found herself, despite every formal briefing she’d prepared for this meeting, genuinely unsure what kind of person she was actually about to meet.

Ten minutes later, Suresh returned. ”He’s awake. Says he’ll come down, but he wants to finish his snack first.”

Meera stared at him.

”The Director-General’s formal envoy,” she said slowly, ”is being asked to wait for a snack.”

”Welcome to Room 404,” Suresh said, not unkindly, gesturing her toward a bench near the courtyard’s edge. ”You’ll get used to it. Everyone does, eventually.”
