Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Word about the shield spread the way water finds a crack — quietly at first, then all at once.

It started with Mr. Bhatia, who couldn’t keep the discovery to himself past breakfast, and told two neighbors over the shared kitchenette that something invisible now covered the entire building, thick enough to swallow every sound from outside. It moved to the settlement market by midday, carried by residents doing their usual supply runs, embellished the way every Ethan-related story eventually got embellished — the shield became a fortress, then an ”unbreakable divine barrier,” then, by evening, something a trader swore had personally deflected an artillery shell fired from three blocks over during some skirmish nobody else remembered happening.

None of that was quite true. What was true, and what mattered considerably more, was the part nobody had to exaggerate: an entire apartment building, four stories of ordinary residential space, had gone an entire night without a single monster incursion, a single scream, a single moment of the fear that had defined every night since the sky turned red.

By the second morning, people had started showing up.

Ethan noticed the crowd from his window around noon — a cluster of maybe thirty people gathered outside the building’s front entrance, standing in loose, uncertain groups, carrying bundles of belongings, some with children clutched close, all of them staring up at the building with an expression Ethan recognized but couldn’t immediately place.

He went down to investigate, mostly out of curiosity, and found Suresh already at the entrance, trying, with limited success, to manage a situation that had clearly grown beyond one elderly janitor’s capacity to handle alone.

”Beta,” Suresh said, relief flooding his face the moment he spotted Ethan. ”Good, you’re awake. These people — they heard about the shield. They want to stay.”

”Stay,” Ethan repeated, looking out at the crowd, which had already started murmuring and shifting at the sight of him, several people visibly recognizing the boy from the increasingly elaborate neighborhood legends.

A woman near the front stepped forward, clutching a young girl’s hand tightly in her own. ”Please,” she said, voice cracking with the specific exhaustion of someone who’d been afraid for far too many consecutive weeks. ”We heard nothing gets through. No monsters, no noise, nothing. We just need somewhere safe. Even the hallway, the stairwell, anything—”

”We can pay,” a man beside her added quickly. ”Whatever we have. Salvage, food, labor—”

Ethan looked out at the gathered crowd — thirty people, easily, and growing as more trickled in from the direction of the market, drawn by the same rumor that had brought the first arrivals. He recognized the fear in their faces immediately, because he’d seen versions of it every single day since the apocalypse started, in Suresh’s careful hands, in Mr. Bhatia’s mop handle, in every resident of this building who’d spent three weeks flinching at loud noises before the shield finally let them sleep properly.

He thought about turning them away. It would have been easy — the shield covered his building, not the whole district, and he had every reasonable justification for keeping it that way. But he also thought about the noodles he’d shared with nobody the first week of the apocalypse, hoarding out of instinct rather than necessity, and how quickly that instinct had faded once he’d realized just how much he actually had to spare.

”Okay,” he said finally, and the murmur that ran through the crowd at that single word carried a wave of relief so palpable it was almost physical. ”Lower floors are open. There’s not enough apartments for everyone, but the stairwells, the lobby, the basement — it’s all safe now, all inside the shield. You can set up there.”

”Beta,” Suresh said quietly, pulling him aside as the crowd began surging forward with grateful, disbelieving murmurs, ”there could be hundreds more coming once this spreads properly. Do you understand what you’re agreeing to?”

Ethan considered that, glancing back at the crowd — more arriving even as they spoke, the initial thirty already swelling toward fifty, sixty, word clearly spreading through the settlement faster than either of them could track. He thought about the shield’s range, the sanctuary field’s boundary, and did some rough, lazy math in his head.

”How many can the building actually hold?” he asked.

”Physically? Maybe two hundred, if people share space. The courtyard too, if we set up proper shelter there.”

”And how many are out there right now, across the district, without anywhere safe to sleep?”

Suresh didn’t have an exact number, but the look on his face suggested it was considerably more than two hundred.

”Okay,” Ethan said, coming to a decision with the same casual, unbothered confidence he brought to most things. ”Let them in. All of them, as many as we can fit. We’ll figure out space as we go.”

By evening, the building had transformed. What had been a quiet, half-empty residential block three weeks into an apocalypse was now a bustling, crowded sanctuary — families setting up bedding in the lobby, elderly residents claiming corners of the courtyard, children running between the makeshift camps with an energy Ethan hadn’t seen from any child since the sky turned red, free for the first time in weeks to simply be loud without fear of drawing something dangerous.

Suresh moved through the crowd with a clipboard he’d salvaged from somewhere, doing his best to organize the chaos into something resembling order — allocating space, tracking who’d arrived, quietly making sure nobody went without at least a small share of the building’s resources. Ethan watched him work for a while from the stairwell landing, genuinely impressed by how naturally the old janitor had stepped into the role of something like a settlement administrator.

”You’re good at this,” Ethan observed.

”Someone has to be, beta,” Suresh said, not looking up from his clipboard. ”You’ve given these people a miracle. Least I can do is make sure it doesn’t collapse into chaos.”

Down in the courtyard, Ethan spotted the woman from earlier, the one with the young girl, sitting against the wall with her daughter curled asleep against her shoulder — actually asleep, deeply and peacefully, in a way that suggested the child hadn’t slept properly in longer than anyone should have to endure. The woman caught Ethan’s eye and offered a small, exhausted smile, the kind of gratitude that didn’t need words to carry its full weight.

Ethan gave an awkward little wave back, unsure what else to do with the moment, and retreated back toward the stairs before anyone could try to thank him properly, because he’d never quite figured out how to accept that kind of thing gracefully.

Ethan read the notification back in his own apartment that night, the muffled sounds of a genuinely lively, crowded lower floor drifting up faintly even through the shield’s near-total sound dampening — laughter, mostly, and quiet conversation, the specific texture of a place where people finally felt safe enough to talk above a whisper.

”Prepare for continued influx,” he repeated, mildly amused, settling onto his bed with his phone propped against the pillow as always. ”Yeah. I figured that might happen.”

He didn’t feel especially burdened by it. If anything, watching the courtyard fill with people who could finally, properly sleep felt like the single most satisfying use of his ridiculous, overpowered existence so far — better than the sword, better than the trench, better even than the food storage. Not because it was dramatic. Because it was quiet, and warm, and exactly the kind of problem his lazy, effortless power turned out to be perfectly suited to solving.

He drifted off within minutes, utterly unaware that by morning, the crowd outside his building would have doubled again.
