Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The Sanctuary Field, for all its genuine, life-saving benefits, had one flaw Ethan discovered about four days after activating it: it didn’t do anything about noise.

He’d assumed, in the vague, optimistic way people assume things about magic they don’t fully understand, that ”hostile entity suppression” would translate into a general sense of peace and quiet. What it actually meant, in practice, was that monsters simply avoided crossing into the field’s boundary — which left an awful lot of them pacing, snarling, and occasionally shrieking at the invisible wall from just outside it, close enough that the sound carried straight up to Ethan’s fourth-floor window with irritating clarity.

He was three nights into a stretch of interrupted sleep, courtesy of a particularly persistent pack of mutated dogs that had taken to howling at the sanctuary boundary every night around 2 AM like it had personally offended them, when he finally reached his limit.

”That’s it,” he mumbled into his pillow, phone glowing dimly in the dark as another chorus of howls drifted up from the street. ”That’s genuinely it. I fixed the monster problem and somehow made a worse problem.”

He pulled up the system menu, bleary-eyed, scrolling through options with the specific determination of a man solving a problem purely out of sleep-deprived spite.

[- VOID SHIELD (LOCKED — REQUIREMENT: 150 S-RANK CLEARS)]

”Locked,” Ethan groaned, checking his current count out of habit.

[CURRENT S-RANK CLEARS: 149]

”...Are you kidding me. One clear. One!”

He stared at the ceiling for a long moment, genuinely considering whether it was worth waking his avatar up faster somehow — though of course it never slept, never stopped, and had presumably been one clear away from this threshold for however long he’d been lying here listening to dogs howl. He pulled up the feed, watched his tiny pixel self locked in combat with something large and slow-moving in a dungeon labeled Floor 82, and willed it, with the pure, useless intensity of a man watching a kettle refuse to boil, to hurry up.

It took another eleven minutes. He counted every one of them, howling dogs providing an unwelcome soundtrack throughout.

Ethan sat bolt upright so fast he nearly knocked his phone off the nightstand. ”Finally.”

[VOID SHIELD]

[DESCRIPTION: GENERATES A SOLID, SEMI-TRANSPARENT DOME OF VOID ENERGY OVER A DESIGNATED STRUCTURE]

[EFFECT: COMPLETE PHYSICAL AND AUDITORY ISOLATION FROM EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT]

[EFFECT: STRUCTURE BECOMES IMPERVIOUS TO EXTERNAL PHYSICAL, MAGICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE]

[RANGE: SCALES WITH DESIGNATED STRUCTURE SIZE]

[NOTE: THIS IS FUNCTIONALLY EQUIVALENT TO A TIER-9 DEFENSIVE FORTIFICATION SPELL]

[NOTE: TIER-9 FORTIFICATIONS ARE TYPICALLY RESERVED FOR NATIONAL CAPITAL BUILDINGS]

[NOTE: USER IS APPLYING IT TO A RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT BLOCK TO STOP DOGS FROM HOWLING]

”Correct on all counts,” Ethan said, already tapping through the activation prompt without a shred of hesitation. ”Deploy it. Right now. Over the whole building.”

[DEPLOY VOID SHIELD OVER DESIGNATED STRUCTURE?]

[STRUCTURE: RESIDENTIAL BLOCK, ROOM 404 ADDRESS]

[CONFIRM?]

”Confirmed. Yes. Absolutely. Do it.”

The shift, when it came, felt different from the Sanctuary Field’s gentle ripple. This one arrived with a low, resonant hum that Ethan felt in his teeth more than heard with his ears, a pressure that built steadily across the entire building before settling, all at once, into total, absolute silence.

The howling stopped.

Not because the dogs had wandered off — Ethan could still see them, through his window, pacing and snarling at the sanctuary boundary exactly as before — but because the sound simply no longer reached him. He watched a dog throw its head back in a full, open-mouthed howl, and heard nothing but the faint hum of his own refrigerator down the hall.

”Oh, thank god,” he breathed, sinking back into his pillow with the profound relief of a man who had just solved a genuinely persistent, sleep-destroying problem. ”Silence. Beautiful, blessed silence.”

[NOTE: BUILDING CAN NOW SURVIVE DIRECT IMPACTS FROM S-RANK AND BELOW WITHOUT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE]

He didn’t process that last line properly, too busy savoring the quiet, but it would matter considerably more in the coming weeks than he currently had the presence of mind to appreciate.

Downstairs, the building’s other residents noticed the change almost immediately, and considerably more dramatically than Ethan had intended.

Mr. Bhatia, lying awake in his third-floor apartment nursing his usual insomnia, sat up in bed the moment the ambient street noise — the constant, low murmur of distant monster activity that had become the district’s unwelcome white noise over the past month — simply vanished. He crept to his window, pulled back the curtain, and stared out at a street that looked exactly the same as it had five minutes earlier, except now entirely, eerily silent, like watching a television with the volume muted.

”What in the—” He pressed his palm against the glass, half-expecting to feel some obvious barrier, and felt nothing but ordinary window pane, cool and unremarkable.

Down in the family’s apartment in 407, the baby — who had been fussing restlessly for the past hour, as babies did — suddenly, inexplicably, fell asleep the moment the shield activated, the sudden absence of ambient noise apparently doing what an hour of exhausted parental rocking hadn’t managed.

”It’s quiet,” the mother whispered to her husband, disbelieving, staring at their now-sleeping child. ”It’s actually quiet.”

Suresh, doing his usual late-night rounds through the lobby, noticed it too — the building’s old, familiar creaks and groans still present, but everything from outside simply gone, replaced by a stillness so complete it felt almost sacred. He stood in the middle of the lobby for a long moment, next to the still-broken vending machine, and felt something in his chest loosen that had been tight for nearly a month straight.

”Beta,” he murmured, glancing up toward the fourth floor with a small, tired smile, ”whatever you just did — thank you.”

He had no way of knowing that Ethan’s motivation, at that exact moment, had nothing to do with the building’s collective wellbeing and everything to do with a personal vendetta against three specific howling mutant dogs.

The result, regardless of intent, was the same. For the first time since the sky turned red, an entire building full of exhausted, frightened survivors slept through a full night without a single distant howl, scream, or explosion disturbing their rest — sealed inside an invisible dome of void energy powerful enough to shrug off a national capital’s worth of siege weaponry, deployed entirely because one lazy nineteen-year-old had finally had enough of the noise.
