Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan had, against considerable odds, managed to find a working movie file.

One of his neighbors on the second floor — a college kid named Rohan who’d apparently spent the apocalypse’s first week jury-rigging a solar setup out of salvaged panels — had gotten his old laptop running again, and Ethan had traded a modest handful of monster cores for two hours of borrowed power and a hard drive full of downloaded films. It was, by his current standards, an enormous luxury.

He picked something loud and dumb with a lot of explosions, settled onto his bed with a bowl of void-preserved noodles balanced on his knee, and propped his phone against the pillow beside the laptop screen, avatar feed running quietly in the corner as always, background noise to background noise.

He was maybe forty minutes into the movie — deeply invested in whether the protagonist would make it to the helicopter in time — when the avatar feed flickered in a way that caught his attention despite himself.

The pixelated corridor his tiny avatar had been grinding through for the past hour — some mid-tier tower floor, unremarkable, routine — dissolved into a loading screen, brief and clean, the kind of transition Ethan had learned to associate with the avatar moving between major zones rather than just rooms.

[AVATAR HAS DISCOVERED A HIDDEN PASSAGE]

[SCANNING...]

[NEW ZONE DETECTED]

Ethan glanced over, mildly curious, one hand still holding his fork.

[ZONE CLASSIFICATION: S-RANK]

[ZONE NAME: THE VOID CAVE]

[STATUS: LEGENDARY DUNGEON — SEALED FOR 200+ YEARS]

[WARNING: THIS ZONE HAS NEVER BEEN CLEARED]

[WARNING: THIS ZONE HAS NEVER BEEN SUCCESSFULLY ENTERED]

[WARNING: SEVEN PREVIOUS EXPEDITIONS RECORDED AS TOTAL LOSSES]

Ethan paused the movie without really deciding to. That last line had a weight to it that even his usual system-notification indifference couldn’t quite shrug off.

”Seven expeditions,” he read aloud. ”Total losses. That sounds bad, right? That sounds like a ’don’t go in there’ kind of warning.”

The pixel avatar on screen, entirely unbothered by two centuries of accumulated doom, walked directly through the newly revealed passage without pausing, sword drawn, moving with the same brisk, businesslike efficiency it applied to every dungeon it had ever cleared.

”No, no, hold on—” Ethan sat up straighter, forgetting his noodles entirely, forgetting the movie paused mid-explosion on the laptop beside him. ”Buddy. Little guy. Read the warning. It says total losses. That usually means don’t.”

The avatar did not read the warning. The avatar did not, as far as Ethan had ever been able to tell, possess the capacity to read anything at all — it simply operated, endlessly, according to whatever logic drove it deeper into every dungeon it encountered, chasing progression with the same mindless persistence a river chased downhill.

The screen shifted, rendering a new environment — darker than anything Ethan had seen from the feed before, the crude pixel art replaced by something with genuinely unsettling detail: jagged black stone veined with pulsing violet light, an oppressive void-dark ceiling that seemed to swallow the avatar’s own light source, and, in the distance, shapes moving that the tiny camera struggled to properly render, like the game itself was reluctant to show him too much at once.

[ENTERING: THE VOID CAVE]

[AMBIENT THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]

[RECOMMENDED PARTY SIZE: NONE — ZONE IS CONSIDERED UNCLEARABLE]

”Unclearable,” Ethan repeated, feeling a genuine flicker of something that, in a braver man, might have been called worry. In Ethan, it manifested mostly as intense irritation that his relaxing movie night had been interrupted by his own system apparently wandering into a death trap. ”This is exactly the kind of thing that gets a character killed in act two. This is a warning sign, you absolute—”

He grabbed his phone properly now, both hands, staring at the screen with actual focus for the first time in weeks, half-expecting the feed to cut to some kind of dramatic failure notification.

Instead, the avatar kept walking, sword held loose at its side, moving through the oppressive dark like it was strolling through a park. Shapes emerged from the shadows on either side — massive, indistinct things with too many limbs, void-black bodies that seemed to bend light around themselves in ways the crude pixel rendering could barely keep up with.

They didn’t attack. Or rather, they did, and the attacks simply didn’t register as anything the avatar needed to respond to. Something the size of a bus lunged from the darkness, jaws wide, and the avatar’s passive aura — the same one that had leveled the Hollowed Warden, the same one that had shattered every weapon Deshu’s group carried — met the creature before it ever closed the distance, and it simply dissolved into the same drifting particle mist Ethan had grown used to seeing.

[7 ADDITIONAL ENTITIES NEUTRALIZED]

Ethan let out a slow breath he hadn’t realized he was holding, watching notification after notification scroll by, each one confirming that whatever had wiped out seven previous expeditions of presumably well-equipped, well-trained hunters was, for his avatar, roughly as threatening as a swarm of gnats.

”Okay,” he said slowly, some of the tension easing out of his shoulders. ”Okay, you’re fine. You’re doing fine. I take back the yelling.”

The corridor opened, deeper in, into a massive chamber lit entirely by the pulsing violet veins running through the black stone — and at its center, suspended in the air above a cracked stone altar, hung something that made even the system’s usually clinical notification text seem to hesitate.

[SCAN INCOMPLETE — ARTIFACT EXCEEDS SYSTEM ANALYSIS CAPACITY]

[RECOMMENDATION: PROCEED WITH CAUTION]

The avatar, predictably, proceeded with zero caution whatsoever, walking straight toward the floating object like it was picking up a dropped coin.

Ethan leaned in close to the screen, genuinely curious despite himself, forgetting entirely about his noodles going cold on the bed beside him. ”What even is that? It doesn’t have a name tag or anything, that’s new.”

He didn’t get an answer before the avatar reached out and closed a tiny pixelated hand around the object, and the entire screen flashed white — brighter and more sustained than any previous notification, bright enough that Ethan actually flinched back and shielded his eyes on reflex, despite the fact that it was just his phone.

When the light faded, the feed had cut out entirely. No corridor, no chamber, no tiny avatar. Just a single line of text on an otherwise blank screen.

[CONNECTION TO AVATAR TEMPORARILY SEVERED]

[PROCESSING ACQUISITION...]

[PLEASE STAND BY]

Ethan stared at the blank screen for a long, quiet moment, noodles forgotten, movie still paused on a frozen helicopter that would apparently have to wait.

”Please stand by,” he repeated slowly, a small knot of genuine unease forming in his stomach for the first time in what felt like weeks. ”That’s — that’s not an ominous thing to say at all. Totally normal system behavior. I’m sure it’s fine.”

He sat there in the dim light of his bedroom, phone held tight in both hands, waiting for his tiny pixel self to reappear and tell him, in whatever limited way it could, exactly what it had just picked up.

The screen stayed blank for a long, long time.
