Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The notifications started before Ethan even finished breakfast.

His phone buzzed against the counter every few seconds, a steady, relentless drumbeat of pings that had gone from mildly interesting three weeks ago to actively hostile to his eating experience. He was trying to enjoy a bowl of void-preserved rice — still perfectly warm, a small daily miracle he’d never get tired of — and his phone kept lighting up like it was personally trying to sabotage the moment.

”Okay, I get it,” Ethan said, glaring at the screen as it buzzed for what had to be the ninth time in two minutes. ”You found teeth. Great. Congratulations. I don’t need a parade for every single one.”

The infinite void inventory had solved his storage crisis, sure — no more overflow warnings, no more emergency basement dumps — but it hadn’t solved the other half of the problem, which was that his avatar apparently found something worth notifying him about roughly every four seconds, and the sheer volume of pings had turned his phone into an unusable mess of vibration and chimes. He’d missed two actual phone calls this week — not that phone service worked reliably anymore, but still — buried under an avalanche of ”you have acquired one (1) rusted dagger” alerts.

He set down his rice, mildly annoyed now, and pulled up the settings menu he’d glanced at once before and immediately ignored in favor of more pressing matters, like eggs.

[SYSTEM SETTINGS]

[- NOTIFICATION FREQUENCY]

[- AVATAR BEHAVIOR PARAMETERS]

[- INVENTORY MANAGEMENT]

[- AUTO-LOOT FILTER (NEW)]

”Auto-loot filter,” Ethan read aloud, brightening immediately. ”Oh, thank god, finally.”

He tapped it open, and a clean, surprisingly well-organized menu unfolded — clearly something the system had built specifically in response to his growing irritation, or possibly just standard functionality he’d been too lazy to discover until his patience finally ran out.

[AUTO-LOOT FILTER SETTINGS]

[NOTIFY ON ITEM RARITY:]

[☑ COMMON]

[☑ UNCOMMON]

[☑ RARE]

[☑ EPIC]

[☑ LEGENDARY]

[☑ UNIQUE]

[☑ MYTHIC]

Every box was checked by default, which explained everything about the last three weeks of his life. Ethan stared at the list for a moment, weighing his options with the seriousness of a man configuring parental controls on his own existence.

”Common,” he muttered, unchecking the first box immediately. ”Definitely not. Uncommon — no, still don’t care.” He kept going, thumb moving down the list with growing satisfaction, unchecking box after box. ”Rare... eh, still no. Epic—”

He paused there, genuinely considering it. Epic sounded like it should matter. Epic sounded like the kind of rarity a normal person, in a normal fantasy story, would want to know about immediately. He left that one checked, along with Legendary, Unique, and Mythic, because even Ethan had some sense of where the line between ”junk mail” and ”actually relevant” should sit.

[FILTER APPLIED]

[NOTIFICATIONS WILL NOW ONLY DISPLAY FOR: EPIC, LEGENDARY, UNIQUE, MYTHIC]

[ESTIMATED NOTIFICATION REDUCTION: 99.7%]

The silence that followed was immediate and glorious. His phone sat still on the counter, screen dark, no buzzing, no pinging, just the quiet hum of the avatar feed continuing its endless grind in the background without bothering him about every single scrap of loot it picked up along the way.

”Beautiful,” Ethan said, picking his rice back up with the satisfaction of a man who’d just solved a genuine quality-of-life crisis. ”This is what I’ve been missing.”

He scrolled a little further down the settings menu out of curiosity and found another option he hadn’t noticed before, tucked below the rarity filter.

[SORT AUTO-DISCARD]

[AUTOMATICALLY DISCARD ITEMS BELOW SELECTED RARITY THRESHOLD]

[THRESHOLD: RARE]

[STATUS: DISABLED]

Ethan considered this one carefully. It was tempting — no more manual dumping, no more basement trips, everything below Rare just quietly vanishing the moment it dropped, never even entering his inventory in the first place. But something about it nagged at him, a faint memory of Suresh’s trembling hands holding a rusted-looking sword that turned out to be worth more than a museum exhibit.

”Actually,” he muttered, ”let’s not auto-delete stuff. Just keep it quiet, don’t need to see it.”

He left the discard threshold disabled, deciding the void inventory’s unlimited space made hoarding effectively free, and figured he’d deal with redistribution the same way he always had — occasionally, lazily, whenever the mood struck him or Suresh looked particularly hopeful.

He finished his rice in blessed, uninterrupted silence for the first time in weeks, phone sitting dark and peaceful on the counter beside him. It was, genuinely, one of the more satisfying moments of his entire post-apocalypse existence — not a boss kill, not a stat surge, not a legendary weapon drop, just a quiet meal without his phone screaming at him every four seconds.

The peace lasted almost fifteen full minutes before the phone buzzed once, sharp and deliberate, cutting through the silence with the specific weight of a notification that had actually made it through his new filter.

[ITEM ACQUIRED: SPATIAL COMPASS FRAGMENT]

[RARITY: LEGENDARY]

[SET ITEM — 1 OF 3]

Ethan glanced at it, mildly curious now that the noise had actual signal behind it instead of endless junk. ”A compass fragment. Set item. Huh.” He filed that away as vaguely interesting and went back to his rice, unaware that this small, quiet notification was the first thread of something considerably bigger unspooling in the background of his life — a set piece the system had been slowly assembling from dungeons his avatar cleared without him ever once paying attention.

He didn’t chase it. He didn’t investigate. He just finished his meal, set the bowl in the sink for later, and pulled up the avatar feed for a few minutes of background entertainment, watching his tiny pixel self cut through another wave of monsters in some corridor labeled Floor 58.

[BOSS DEFEATED]

[LOOT: 3x MONSTER CORE, 1x SPATIAL COMPASS FRAGMENT]

[SET ITEM — 2 OF 3]

”Two of three now,” Ethan noted absently, not particularly invested. ”Cool. I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

He had no idea what a completed Spatial Compass actually did. He had even less idea that somewhere in a very different part of the world, entire hunter guilds had spent years searching dungeons specifically for fragments exactly like the ones his avatar had just casually stumbled into twice in one afternoon, treating them with all the reverence Ethan reserved for finding loose change in a couch cushion.

For now, though, his phone stayed blissfully quiet, his rice was gone, and the apocalypse, for one brief and peaceful afternoon, finally learned to leave him alone.
