Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

By the third day, Ethan’s bedroom had a problem.

It wasn’t the dirty laundry — that had stabilized at a manageable chaos weeks before the apocalypse and hadn’t gotten meaningfully worse. It wasn’t the smell, either, since the system’s void inventory apparently didn’t leak odor no matter what got stuffed inside it. The problem was that his floating inventory panel — the little icon that had once politely displayed three or four items — had swelled into something that looked less like a status window and more like a hoarder’s storage unit that had achieved sentience.

[INVENTORY: 847/900]

[WARNING: STORAGE CAPACITY NEARING LIMIT]

”Eight hundred and forty-seven,” Ethan read aloud, squinting at the number like it might change if he looked disappointed enough at it. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven what, exactly?”

He tapped the panel open, and the list unfurled downward past the edge of his phone screen, scrolling for what felt like an unreasonable amount of time.

[1x IRON DAGGER x142]

[1x LEATHER BOOTS x89]

[1x MONSTER FANG (COMMON) x203]

[1x CRACKED HIDE ARMOR x67]

[1x RUSTED SHORTSWORD x54]

[1x TATTERED CLOAK x31]

[1x HEALTH POTION, MINOR x188]

[...]

Ethan scrolled for almost a full minute before giving up and closing the list, rubbing his eyes with the specific exhaustion of a man who had signed up for a passive fantasy power fantasy and instead gotten a part-time job as an unpaid warehouse manager.

”This is worse than my actual inventory management back when I played that looter shooter,” he muttered. ”At least that one had a sell-all button.”

There was, notably, no sell-all button. There wasn’t a sell button of any kind, actually — nothing indicating Ethan could trade any of this stuff for anything useful, like, say, more chips. The system seemed to have been built entirely around the concept of acquiring things, with zero consideration for what a person was supposed to do once they had eight hundred and forty-seven identical rusted daggers cluttering up their pocket dimension.

He picked up his phone and pulled up the little live-feed window in the corner — his avatar was mid-dungeon-clear, mowing through a cave system full of what looked like oversized centipedes, each kill triggering another automatic loot pickup that fed straight into the same overflowing pile.

[BOSS DEFEATED: CENTIPEDE MATRIARCH]

[LOOT: 1x CHITIN PLATE, 1x VENOM GLAND, 2x IRON DAGGER]

[INVENTORY: 849/900]

”Buddy,” Ethan said to the tiny pixel version of himself on screen, ”we need to talk about your spending habits. Or looting habits. Whatever this is.”

The avatar, predictably, did not respond. It was already three corridors deeper, cutting down something with too many legs.

Ethan decided, in the grand tradition of every gamer who had ever hit inventory capacity in a title with no auto-sort function, that the solution was simple: dump the junk.

He walked down to the lobby — past the still-broken vending machine, which nobody had bothered cleaning up, its sliced remains now serving as an unofficial monument to Ethan’s terrible weapon usage — and out into the small courtyard behind the building, a patch of cracked concrete that used to host a rusted swing set nobody’s kid had used in years.

He pulled up the inventory, found the ”discard” function buried three menus deep, and started dumping.

[DISCARDED: IRON DAGGER x142]

[DISCARDED: LEATHER BOOTS x89]

[DISCARDED: RUSTED SHORTSWORD x54]

Items materialized in the courtyard in soft violet flashes of light — real, physical, solid objects, clattering onto the concrete in growing piles. Ethan watched the heap grow with the detached satisfaction of a man cleaning out a garage.

He didn’t stop to look closely at what he was throwing away. If he had, he might have noticed the ”Rusted Shortsword” pile included at least a dozen blades with faint runic engravings along the fuller, or that the ”Cracked Hide Armor” heap had several pieces that shimmered faintly with residual mana even after being tossed onto cold concrete.

[DISCARDED: HEALTH POTION, MINOR x188]

[DISCARDED: MONSTER FANG (COMMON) x203]

[DISCARDED: TATTERED CLOAK x31]

By the time he finished, the courtyard held a small mountain of gear — easily waist-high in places, glinting under the dim orange afternoon light, weapons stacked haphazardly on armor stacked on shattered potion bottles that had cracked on impact and were slowly staining the concrete a faint silvery blue.

[INVENTORY: 312/900]

[STORAGE OPTIMIZED]

”Better,” Ethan said, satisfied, dusting off his hands like he’d accomplished something meaningful. He turned to head back inside, already thinking about lunch, when a sound behind him made him pause.

A soft, disbelieving gasp.

He turned to find the building’s janitor — an older man named Suresh, gray-stubbled, wiry, the kind of quiet presence who’d swept the lobby every morning for as long as Ethan had lived there and who Ethan was fairly sure had never spoken more than ten words to him total — standing at the courtyard’s edge, staring at the mountain of ”trash” like he’d stumbled onto a religious vision.

”Beta,” Suresh said slowly, voice unsteady. ”Do you know what this is?”

Ethan shrugged. ”Junk. Cleared some space.”

Suresh crouched at the edge of the pile, picked up one of the ”Rusted Shortswords” with visibly trembling hands, and turned it over. The rust flaked away where his thumb rubbed the blade, revealing steel underneath that gleamed a deep, impossible blue, the runic script along its edge catching what little light the afternoon offered.

”This is a Mist-Forged Blade,” Suresh whispered. ”Beta, before the world changed, I served — a long time ago, doesn’t matter now — but this kind of steel, this pattern, I have only seen this once. In a museum. Behind bulletproof glass.”

Ethan blinked. ”It looked kind of crusty, though.”

”It is disguised as crusty,” Suresh said, something close to reverence creeping into his voice as he picked through the pile with growing urgency, finding a piece of ”cracked hide armor” that, on closer inspection, bore faint enchantment seams along the shoulders. ”This whole pile, beta — this is not trash. This is a fortune. This is several fortunes.”

Ethan looked at the mountain of gear again, genuinely reconsidering it for the first time, tilting his head like a man trying to see an optical illusion from a different angle.

”...huh,” he said. ”The system did call it ’common,’ though.”

”Common compared to what,” Suresh said, almost laughing now, disbelief and something like joy warring across his weathered face. ”Compared to your sword, maybe. To the rest of us, this is—” He gestured helplessly at the pile, words failing him.

Ethan considered this information with the seriousness of a man recalculating a tip.

”Okay,” he said finally. ”You can have it, then. All of it. I don’t need it.”

Suresh went very, very still.

”...all of it?”

”Yeah. Split it with whoever, I don’t care. Just—” Ethan held up a finger, already turning back toward the building, mind moving on to more pressing matters. ”Don’t let anyone fight over it in the stairwell again. Mr. Bhatia already almost lost a finger over a mop handle.”

He walked back inside without waiting for a response, already thinking about noodles, leaving behind a mountain of what the system had dismissively labeled iron-tier trash — and one very old, very quiet janitor sitting alone in a courtyard, surrounded by enough legendary-grade equipment to outfit an entire hunter guild, wondering exactly what kind of monster he’d been sweeping floors for.
