Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The screen stayed blank for eleven minutes.

Ethan knew because he counted, phone gripped tight in both hands, movie forgotten, noodles congealing into a sad cold lump on the plate beside him. Eleven minutes was, by the standards of a system that usually responded to his questions within seconds, an eternity, and by the end of it he’d worked himself into a state of genuine, focused concern that felt strange sitting in his chest — an emotion he hadn’t had much practice with since the apocalypse started.

Then the screen flickered back to life.

Ethan let out a breath so relieved it came out half-laugh, half-groan. ”Okay. Okay, good, you’re not dead, you’re just — collecting mystery rocks that predate the universe, apparently, cool, normal Tuesday.”

The feed resumed properly a moment later, the tiny pixel avatar back in frame, standing in that same violet-veined chamber, sword sheathed now, moving with its usual brisk indifference toward the next passage leading deeper into the Void Cave.

Ethan settled back against his pillow, deciding he’d earned the right to keep watching rather than go back to his movie, some protective instinct now fully engaged despite three weeks of evidence suggesting his avatar needed exactly zero protecting.

What followed was, by any reasonable measure, one of the most quietly absurd things Ethan had witnessed since the world ended.

The passage beyond the chamber opened into a corridor lined with pressure plates — dozens of them, visible even through the crude rendering as faint discolorations in the stone floor, the kind of trap mechanism that Ethan, from a lifetime of gaming, recognized instantly as a death sentence for anyone who didn’t know exactly where to step.

[47 TRAP TRIGGERS IDENTIFIED ALONG CORRIDOR]

The avatar walked directly across every single one of them without pause, without hesitation, without so much as a flicker in its stride.

Each pressure plate triggered exactly as designed — sections of floor dropping away into darkness, spikes erupting from concealed slots in the walls, a section of ceiling collapsing directly onto the spot the avatar had occupied a half-second earlier. And every single time, the avatar was simply already somewhere else, not through any visible evasive action Ethan could track, but through the same effortless, almost accidental positioning that had let the real Ethan dodge an F-rank gate beast while checking his phone.

”This corridor,” Ethan said slowly, watching the pixel avatar stroll through a hailstorm of erupting spikes without altering its pace by a fraction, ”would’ve killed an entire army. Like, an actual army. Trained soldiers. Tanks, probably.”

[CONFIRMED]

[HISTORICAL RECORD: THIRD EXPEDITION (47 HUNTERS) WIPED OUT ENTIRELY AT THIS CORRIDOR]

[TIME TO TOTAL LOSS: 4 MINUTES]

[USER AVATAR TIME TO CLEAR: 6 SECONDS]

Ethan sat with that number for a moment — forty-seven trained hunters, gone in four minutes, against a corridor his avatar had cleared in the time it took him to read the notification about it — and felt a complicated mixture of pride and genuine discomfort settle somewhere in his chest.

The corridor ended in a wider room, and this one came with its own dramatic flourish: a wall of shifting runic glyphs, glowing faint violet, arranged in a pattern that pulsed and rearranged itself every few seconds.

[PUZZLE DETECTED: THE SILENT RIDDLE]

[SOLUTION REQUIRED TO PROCEED]

[FAILURE CONDITION: INSTANT LETHAL PURGE]

[HISTORICAL RECORD: FOURTH AND FIFTH EXPEDITIONS LOST HERE — COMBINED 62 CASUALTIES]

”Oh, a riddle,” Ethan said, sitting up properly now, genuinely engaged. ”Okay, this should be interesting, let’s see if you’re actually smart or just really strong—”

The avatar walked directly into the wall of glyphs without pausing to examine a single one of them.

The runes flared bright, the pattern locking into what should have been a lethal configuration, energy crackling visibly across the entire chamber in a way that made Ethan’s stomach drop for a full half-second — and then simply extinguished, the glyphs fading to nothing, the wall dissolving away like it had never existed at all.

Ethan blinked at that one for a long moment. ”So it’s not that you solved the riddle. It’s that the riddle looked at you and just... gave up.”

[ESSENTIALLY, YES]

”That’s kind of hilarious, actually.”

He kept watching, increasingly entertained now that the initial worry had faded into something closer to gleeful disbelief, as the avatar breezed through what the system’s own historical logs described, one after another, as legitimate civilization-ending obstacles. A gauntlet of elemental storms that had incinerated the sixth expedition in under a minute passed over the avatar like weather it hadn’t noticed. A guardian statue built from compressed void-stone, rated as a standalone S-rank threat in its own right, took one look at the avatar — or whatever the void-stone equivalent of looking was — and simply crumbled into inert rubble without a fight.

”It gave up,” Ethan repeated, delighted now, all traces of worry fully replaced by genuine amusement. ”The ancient death guardian looked at my little pixel guy and just went ’yeah, no, not today’ and fell over. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.”

By the time the avatar reached the final chamber of the Void Cave — a vast, echoing space that the system flagged as the dungeon’s original sealed core, untouched for two centuries — it had cleared every single obstacle that had claimed seven prior expeditions and dozens of lives, in a combined total time of roughly four minutes, without triggering a single meaningful resistance.

[REWARD GENERATED]

[GENERATING...]

Ethan set his phone down against the pillow, leaned back, and let out a long, satisfied breath, glancing at his cold noodles with something like fond regret.

”You know,” he said, to the tiny pixel figure standing triumphant in an ancient chamber that had claimed dozens of professional hunters’ lives, ”for a system that keeps calling itself ’deprecated’ and ’not supposed to exist,’ you’re doing pretty okay for yourself.”

The avatar, as always, didn’t respond. It simply stood there in the settling quiet of a two-hundred-year-old mystery finally solved, waiting for whatever came next, while Ethan reached for the laptop remote and unpaused his movie, fully confident now that whatever reward the system was still busy generating, it could wait until after the helicopter scene.
