Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan made it home without further incident, which, given the day he’d had, felt like a genuine personal victory. He deposited the rice and pickled onions on his kitchen counter, mourned the eggs he never found, and flopped onto his bed with the specific exhaustion of a man who’d technically saved an elite hunter squad and still had nothing decent for dinner.

He pulled out his phone to check the avatar feed, mostly out of habit, and instead got greeted by something considerably less relaxing.

[WARNING: INVENTORY CAPACITY CRITICAL]

[CURRENT LOAD: 897/900]

[3 SLOTS REMAINING]

[NEW ITEM ACQUISITION MAY BE BLOCKED]

Ethan stared at the number, genuinely alarmed for the first time in this conversation. ”Three slots. THREE. I dumped a whole mountain of stuff four days ago!”

He pulled up the full list, and it scrolled the way it always did now — endlessly, a graveyard of duplicate gear and monster parts stacking up faster than he could process, made considerably worse by the fact that his avatar had apparently spent the last two days blitzing through forty-five floors of some tower called the Ash Spire while simultaneously farming a ”Sunken Vein” clear bonus from his own accidental dungeon detour that morning.

”This is a mess,” Ethan announced to his empty room, scrolling with growing despair. ”This is genuinely worse than my downloads folder.”

He’d tried the discard-and-dump method once already, four days ago, with the courtyard mountain that had turned Suresh into a nervous wreck of gratitude. But dumping everything in one place clearly wasn’t sustainable — not when the avatar kept generating loot at a pace that made his old ”dump the trash” strategy look like bailing out a sinking ship with a teaspoon. He needed an actual system. A pipeline. Something that didn’t involve him personally standing in a courtyard every few days, flinging legendary equipment onto concrete like a man throwing out expired yogurt.

He tapped through the settings menu — a part of the interface he’d mostly ignored, since up until now everything the system did just sort of happened to him without requiring input.

[SYSTEM SETTINGS]

[- NOTIFICATION FREQUENCY]

[- AVATAR BEHAVIOR PARAMETERS]

[- INVENTORY MANAGEMENT]

[- STORAGE EXPANSION (LOCKED)]

”Storage expansion,” Ethan read aloud, tapping it hopefully.

[LOCKED]

[REQUIREMENT: COMPLETE 100 S-RANK DUNGEON CLEARS]

[CURRENT PROGRESS: 12/100]

He groaned and let his head fall back against the pillow. ”Twelve out of a hundred. Great. Cool. So I’ve got, what, another few weeks of drowning in rusty daggers before this thing decides I’ve earned a bigger pocket.”

He sat with that for a moment, staring at the ceiling, running through his admittedly limited options. He could keep dumping the excess in the courtyard, but that had already turned Suresh into an emotional wreck once, and Ethan wasn’t sure the old man’s heart could handle a repeat performance every few days for the indefinite future. He could try selling it — except he had no idea who bought this stuff, or what ”selling” even looked like now that money had become mostly theoretical.

Or he could find somewhere to actually store it. Properly. Somewhere with enough space that a mountain of legendary gear wouldn’t look quite so much like an active crime scene.

He thought about the building’s basement — a dusty, half-flooded storage level nobody used anymore, mostly full of broken furniture and a boiler that hadn’t worked since before Ethan moved in. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was space, and space was exactly what this problem needed.

”Basement,” he decided out loud, sitting up. ”That could work.”

He made his way downstairs, past the lobby’s still-unrepaired vending machine wreckage, and found the basement door — heavy, rusted, locked with an old padlock that had probably last been opened when the building was constructed. He gave the padlock an experimental tug, forgetting, for a brief and mildly catastrophic second, exactly how much strength currently lived in his hands.

The padlock didn’t just break. It liquefied — the entire mechanism crumbling into fine metal dust between his fingers, the same way his cutlery had two days earlier, leaving him holding a rusted hasp and a door that swung open on its own weight the moment the lock stopped resisting it.

”Right,” he muttered, staring at his own hand. ”Forgot about that.”

The basement, once he found the old breaker switch and flickered a single bare bulb to life, turned out to be bigger than he remembered — a long, low-ceilinged space that stretched the full footprint of the building, mostly empty save for stacked broken chairs, a dead water heater, and enough dust to make him sneeze twice before he’d even taken five steps in.

”Perfect,” he said, surveying the space with the satisfaction of a man who’d finally found a solution to a problem that had been genuinely bothering him. He pulled up his inventory again and started the discard process, this time with slightly more organization than his courtyard method — sorting items roughly into piles by category as he went, weapons in one corner, armor in another, the endless sea of monster cores and crafting materials dumped into a third.

[DISCARDED: IRON DAGGER x201]

[DISCARDED: MONSTER FANG (COMMON) x312]

[DISCARDED: MIST-FORGED BLADE x19]

Piles grew steadily across the basement floor, violet flashes lighting the dim room every few seconds as item after item materialized out of his overloaded storage. Within twenty minutes, the basement had transformed from a forgotten junk room into something that looked, to anyone who actually understood the value of what they were looking at, like the private treasury of a small nation.

Ethan, of course, saw none of that. He saw clutter, successfully relocated out of his phone’s inventory screen and into a space where it could stop bothering him.

[INVENTORY: 340/900]

[STORAGE OPTIMIZED]

[SUGGESTION: ESTABLISH A REGULAR DISCARD SCHEDULE TO PREVENT FUTURE OVERFLOW]

”Regular discard schedule,” Ethan repeated, dusting off his hands as he surveyed the newly formed basement piles, already mentally filing this away as a weekly chore, right up there with laundry and figuring out what to do about his ever-growing cutlery casualty list. ”Yeah, okay. I can do that.”

He flicked off the bare bulb, pulled the basement door shut behind him — no longer lockable, but he doubted anyone in the building was foolish enough to steal from him twice — and made his way back upstairs, already thinking ahead to dinner, already forgetting about the small fortune he’d just casually stacked in a dusty basement like abandoned lawn furniture.

He had no idea that Suresh, doing his evening rounds an hour later, would open that basement door out of pure routine curiosity, take one look inside, and have to sit down on the stairs for several minutes just to process what he was seeing.

He had even less idea that this particular basement, over the following days, would quietly become the single most valuable square footage in the entire district — an unguarded, unremarkable storage room holding enough legendary-grade equipment to outfit a small army, sitting directly beneath the apartment of a boy who considered it, at best, mildly successful clutter management.
