Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Although Felis doesn’t quite understand where she recruited people from, the middle-aged female apprentice employed by Rolando, who takes care of both the eldest and youngest son, clearly listens more to Nanali.

The boy next door is still young, and although he has moved to Rolando’s side tower, the nanny still comes over periodically to tidy up his room... She resides with Rolando’s eldest son.

Tsk, having both parents and even the elder brother living within the sphere of influence of the Tower of Dark Enigma is a great thing!

Felis, who doesn’t know apprentices in other worlds can hire laundry workers, envies them greatly... He just doesn’t want to do laundry.

Mages can even waste a bit and use spells to clean their clothes and rooms, but it’s very difficult for apprentices.

It’s not that they can’t use spells, but clothes made with cotton fabric are too precious.

Even though the Magic Tower tries to isolate the earth’s ability to purify magical energy, some residue remains in reality.

Moreover, not every place in the Magic Tower maintains this shield... Felis heard that it’s to prevent mages from suffocating when leaving the Magic Tower.

Apprentices are even required to take a walk in the so-called central garden periodically... It’s full of stone pillars, and the only decorative objects are in the Black Taro area. What’s there to admire?

The main purpose is to prevent them from forgetting the physical memory of the outside of the Magic Tower.

The most important thing is, common people cannot enter the Magic Tower... even the Tower Master wouldn’t dare to bring it up.

Therefore, daily tasks like using purified water to wash clothes must be done by the apprentices themselves.

Honestly, after entering the Magic Tower, the first thing learned turned out to be housekeeping!

It’s quite wretched to think about.

Thinking about this, Felis sighed deeply, then immediately shook off that inexplicable sense of desolation and started focusing on serious matters again.

Although his time at the Tower of Dark Enigma wasn’t long, he spent some effort figuring out those secret relationships, anyway he couldn’t practice magic, and even dared not look at the magic books much.

The reason Felis noticed the nanny was because when the boy messaged him, he wasn’t particularly wary of that woman... Occasionally, when they were communicating, even when the nanny walked up, she didn’t glance in his direction at all.

This was abnormal... Felis, who still has maids at home, knows their habits well. Unless she already knew he was... heh... one of her own, otherwise, she would definitely coordinate with her master’s demeanor to pay Felis some respect.

This is the usual style of household servants, they wouldn’t abandon displaying loyalty and determination to follow their master even because of their status as mage apprentices.

Moreover, though the music heard outside seemed disordered, the way to use these notes is actually systematic... If seen firsthand during performance, one would definitely not think he was carelessly making noise.

But clearly feeling the nanny’s activity entering the living room... apprentices don’t live in single rooms but in a studio apartment... yet the boy persistently finishes transmitting the message.

This level of trust made Felis completely unhesitant about whose person the nanny belongs to.

Thus, he’s not even surprised that although Rolando treats those two children better than him, they ultimately decided to follow their mother’s footsteps.

As for his several children, Rolando only needs respect, not admiration... In his heart, he already believes he provided the best treatment for his children, how could these kids...

Yet, Rolando probably doesn’t even know why Nanali, who originally didn’t care much for kids, has a better relationship with those two: Rolando can’t even find a proper nanny.

It’s no secret; years ago, Rolando had many romantic rivals, so the mess caused by hiring a nanny for his son... only mage apprentices can enter the inner area of the Tower of Dark Enigma to perform servant roles... was widely spread after Nanali set fire to it.

Honestly, such technically skilled servants are quite hard to find, after all, most female mage apprentices, if really out of options, can always marry into a good family.

It’s really hard to find someone trustworthy, with no ulterior motives to do such low-status work, who can even pass the Tower of Dark Enigma’s verification... Being raised highly from a young age and always seeing peers of former equal status in the Magic Tower, this sort of work is truly not something anyone can do.

Especially since mage apprentices may hold no status in the presence of mages, but even someone capable of casting a small light orb can live well among ordinary people.

Felis even suspects the nanny initially had a different relationship with Rolando, otherwise why would she resort to cold violence on the children.

Rolando actually later tried several others: Nanali outwardly didn’t interfere, but kept supervising, unfortunately, all were found to have issues.

Although it may be the lady deliberately nitpicking, but... what can be said, it’s not just finding fault in eggs.

Now Felis also figured out why the lady didn’t dare to handle it herself initially: there must have been many eyes watching her, and even, the trouble she faced came from two major factions: the suspicious gaze from the Kamente Tower faction hierarchy, and the malice from the Nicholson faction’s middle and lower levels who simply didn’t know what happened, only that Nanali chose to embrace outsiders.

As long as she didn’t want her children to be troubled, she couldn’t misstep at all, yet she needed the hostility from Nicholson’s side to make staying beside Rolando seem more understandable.

Clearly, it’s quite difficult.

Even if Felis can comprehend his mother’s actions, he’s not free of regret about her weakness in entrusting her future to men and children.

Of course, this is just Felis’s occasional minor sentiment, after all, without her mother’s weakness, he wouldn’t exist, not to mention his mother truly loves him.

One can’t just want to change mothers because one’s own mother isn’t as strong as others!

Felis thinks he’s not that awful about it, he even thinks among those he’s met, most merely regret their origins rather than hate or resent them.

Probably that time, Archmage Ruth’s people helped Nanali a bit, so Rolando ultimately selected her own person, allowing the lady to secretly care for her children.

Really... if that’s the case, then relations between these two sides may not necessarily fall apart over minor disputes.

Felis leaned against the window, vaguely pondering: Then does his future not require guarding against the other side too.

Silently turning to glance at the wall adjoining his neighbor, Felis sneered: The visible affection and seeming indifference yet tangible subtlety, the wise ones know who truly loves them.

Of course, it may also relate to these two children’s good fortune, both inheriting their mother’s intelligence.

Like Felis, he occasionally feels fortunate that while his mage talents and intelligence might come from Rolando, his personality and sensitivity still resemble his mother’s... his mother is just a bit shortsighted, whereas Rolando is... entirely lacking.

No wonder Rolando, despite decent talents, has been unable to overcome the major hurdle of Level 12... that requires not just meticulous logic, but also spell sensitivity and intuition.

He slowly stood up, glanced once more at the wall next door, and then headed out: the two female apprentices with ambiguous relationships with Rolando, Nanali probably understands them well enough, there’s no need for him to say anything.

Upon seeing Felis suddenly leave frequently, the neighbors should guess that those two have again sowed discord.

The two constantly use jealousy to manipulate Rolando into doing things he himself hadn’t considered, although each thing isn’t big, collectively they display that sense of control.

Felis genuinely doubts that after Rolando unexpectedly married Nanali, people from Kamente Tower simply sent someone to watch him.
