I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 217: Chapter 151: Data Consolidation, Whipping Up a Top Journal Paper (Part 2)

This meant there were now four top-tier medical papers, and his name was going to be on all of them.

And the best part was, he didn’t have to worry about any of them himself.

The department directors and professors were the ones doing all the work for him.

Jiang He was suddenly struck by a strange feeling.

’Somehow, without me even noticing, it feels like I’ve wrangled all these titans of the medical field to work for me...’

”That’s certainly a lot. I’m heading back to the university. I trust the surgery went well, Professor.”

”Alright, off you go.”

After Jiang He left, Yang Xu clicked his tongue.

’That kid’s so unflappable. Good thing he’s my student... Hmm... I think I’ll go brag to Professor Wang some more.’

’Heh heh. I’ve been in contact with Professor Wang every single day lately.’

’If I had to describe it in one word: Glorious.’

...

Southern Medical University, Basic Medical Sciences Laboratory Building.

At the end of the third-floor hallway, Chen Hao excitedly turned and waved to Jiang He.

”Old Jiang, over here!”

This was the dedicated laboratory the university had specially approved for Jiang He’s team.

Though it wasn’t as sci-fi as the future P3 lab in the High-Tech Zone, it had everything they needed.

Chen Hao stood in the center of the lab, surveying his surroundings.

Brand-new lab benches, neatly racked pipettes, and a -80°C ultra-low temperature freezer.

”Old Jiang, if you’d told me a few months ago... man, you could have beaten me to death and I’d still never have imagined we’d have our own lab at the university. This is just... fucking awesome.”

As he spoke, Chen Hao eagerly pulled out his phone, flipped it around, and aimed the rear camera at the two of them.

”C’mon, c’mon, Old Jiang, get a little closer. Let’s take a selfie.”

Jiang He gave the camera a weary look.

’This guy never misses a chance to take a picture for Juanzi...’

CLICK.

The photo was taken.

Chen Hao pocketed his phone. ”So, Old Jiang, what’s the first step?”

”Building an early prediction model for severe acute pancreatitis. That should be relatively simple.”

”Uh, simple?”

Chen Hao wanted to retort, ’Simple in what universe?’

”It’s not too bad,” Jiang He said. ”The main thing is getting the data. Once we have the data, it’ll be straightforward. Grab a pen.”

At this, Chen Hao’s expression turned serious. He whipped out his little notebook, ready to record every word.

Jiang He began, ”Clinically, there are many indicators used to predict if a case of mild pancreatitis will develop into a severe one: age, BMI, CRP (C-reactive protein), PCT (procalcitonin), and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels within 24 hours of admission, as well as the presence of pleural effusion.”

”What we need to do is simple: run these data points through a weighted calculation to generate a score. If that score exceeds a certain threshold, it triggers a high-risk SAP warning, allowing for immediate intervention.”

Chen Hao nodded, his mind catching up. ”That doesn’t sound too difficult. Our Affiliated Hospital No. 1 must have a ton of pancreatitis case files from the past few years. Can’t we just pull the data and run the stats?”

”It’s not that simple. First, we’ll probably have to extract the PCT and IL-6 data ourselves. Second, the initial weightings must have a rigorous, evidence-based medical foundation.”

Jiang He knew exactly what he was doing.

A new international standard, the BISAP score, had just been proposed this year for this very purpose.

However, that scoring system wasn’t comprehensive.

By releasing his new model first, he would utterly dominate the existing international research.

Jiang He continued, explaining to Chen Hao, ”I just listed a lot of individual indicators. Right now, there isn’t a single authoritative publication that has systematically combined them and assigned them precise scoring weights.”

Chen Hao asked, ”So you’re saying... we’re missing a foundational paper?”

”Exactly.”

Chen Hao scratched his head, feeling like they’d hit a dead end.

After all that, they had everything they needed, only to be stuck waiting for a single theoretical paper.

”So what do we do? Don’t tell me we have to wait for some top medical expert to do the research and publish it before we can move forward?”

Jiang He said, ”If we’re missing a paper, then we’ll just have to whip one up first.”

Chen Hao: ”?”

”Old Jiang, you said... ’whip one up’? What do you mean by that?”

”It means we run a retrospective cohort study, crunch the data, establish a new standard, and publish it. Simple.”

Chen Hao’s mind was reeling.

’What the hell? What does he mean, ”establish a new standard and publish it, simple”?’

’Is he serious? Listen to the words coming out of his mouth.’

’This is a core paper that would define the weighting of international clinical indicators!’

’How can he talk about it like it’s as simple as eating or drinking?’

Jiang He instructed, ”Go tell Cheng Xiyao, Yi Xiangwan, and the others to assemble the whole team. Take my access pass and go to the medical records room at Affiliated Hospital No. 1.”

Chen Hao quickly raised his pen. ”What data are we getting?”

”Pull all inpatient records for confirmed acute pancreatitis cases at Affiliated Hospital No. 1 from ’03 to ’08. Focus on extracting data across five dimensions: peak CRP, PCT, and Interleukin-6 levels within the first twenty-four hours of admission; blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels; and whether chest X-rays indicated pleural effusion. The final outcomes for both mild and severe cases also need to be clearly classified.”

Chen Hao quickly jotted it all down.

He was familiar with this kind of work.

It was how they’d done the LNR study back in the day.

”With the few of us splitting the work, we can get all the data entered into Excel in two or three days, max. But it’s getting late today. How about we just grab a bit of data to look over for now?”

”Good. I’ll start writing the paper on my end immediately.”

Chen Hao froze. ”You’re writing it now? We don’t even have the data yet. How can you start?”

Jiang He said, ”Don’t worry about that. Just go.”

Chen Hao: ”...”

’My own brother, dodging the hard questions every single time.’

’Damn it, now I’m really curious!’

Chen Hao sighed. Not pressing the issue, he turned and walked briskly out of the lab.

After Chen Hao left, Jiang He made another call, this time to Xu Wenpei.

”Director Xu, apologies for the interruption. I’m currently drafting a paper on an early multi-biomarker prediction model for severe acute pancreatitis, or SAP. I’d like to request authorization to access retrospective data on SAP patients from Peking Union Medical College Hospital General Surgery over the past five years.”
