I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 204: Chapter 147: The Senior Attending Physician Is Also Stunned

”What did he say?” Chen Jing pressed.

”He said he’s on a national-level operation, and that lives are at stake.”

The air was quiet for two seconds.

The nurses looked at each other, then began to whisper in amazement.

”A national-level operation? Dr. Jiang is involved at that level now?”

”I knew it!” a young nurse beside them exclaimed, covering her mouth in excitement. ”The River God is no mere mortal! He must be a special agent sent from the higher-ups! No wonder Dean Chen personally approved a private locker room and an all-access pass for him!”

”Exactly! A top leader even came to visit him in his ward, I saw it with my own eyes! When he was leaving, he gripped Dr. Jiang’s hand tightly and said, ’It’s all up to you now!’” another nurse quickly embellished, her imagination running wild.

Watching their reactions, Chen Hao’s suspicion that Jiang He was involved in something huge was completely cemented.

”Alright, I’ll go check on the ER again.” With that, Chen Hao turned and went downstairs.

Behind him, the group of nurses was still excitedly fantasizing about Jiang He’s heroic, god-like exploits.

...

「The Emergency Department.」

Chen Hao found Zhao Yumin in Consultation Room 1.

Zhao Yumin was wearing a mask, his head down as he wrote out an order for a patient.

He looked up and saw Chen Hao, his eyes lighting up. ”Chen Hao? Perfect timing. Two people in the department called in sick. Put on a white coat and sit next to me to help out.”

Zhao Yumin admired Chen Hao and wanted to mentor him.

Chen Hao didn’t refuse, simply pulling up a stool and sitting down.

”Next,” Zhao Yumin said, pressing the button on the calling system.

The door opened and a young girl walked in.

The girl was about 1.6 meters tall, but she had an extremely large frame. Dressed in a baggy sweatshirt, she was out of breath after just a few steps.

”What’s the problem?”

”Doctor, my stomach hurts. My lower right abdomen has been hurting all day, and I keep feeling nauseous like I’m going to throw up.” The girl clutched her stomach, her face contorted in pain.

After a brief examination, Zhao Yumin said:

”Suspected appendicitis. We need to do an ultrasound to confirm. If you need surgery or medication, we’ll have to calculate the dosage precisely. What’s your weight?”

The girl froze for a moment, her gaze starting to shift. ”Doctor... I’m over a hundred pounds.”

Chen Hao, who was about to take her blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer, froze with his hand in mid-air.

’Over a hundred pounds? For her build, even two hundred pounds would be a conservative estimate.’

One hundred and one is ”over a hundred,” but so is one hundred and ninety-nine.

In clinical medicine, a difference of several dozen pounds could literally be a matter of life and death.

Zhao Yumin didn’t even look up, his tone calm. ”How many pounds, exactly? We need your precise weight to calculate the anesthetic and antibiotic dosages. If you hide your weight and the anesthetic dose is too low, you’ll wake up in excruciating pain mid-surgery. If the dose is too high, it could lead to respiratory depression, and your life will be in danger.”

Hearing the words ”life in danger,” the girl was clearly frightened.

She hesitated for a long while before quietly amending, ”Well... maybe around one-seventy or one-eighty pounds.”

After saying that, she even covered her mouth and gave an awkward little laugh. ”Oh, sorry, Doctor. I’ve been eating well recently and put on some weight.”

Chen Hao was thoroughly bewildered.

He ranted internally:

’What does you being overweight have to do with us ER doctors? We’re not fitness coaches. Who’s going to punish you for gaining weight?’

Zhao Yumin, however, remained unfazed. He simply wrote down an estimated weight on her chart and continued filling out the order.

After the girl left, Chen Hao couldn’t help but ask, ”Teacher Zhao, what’s the point of her hiding her weight like that?”

”Don’t worry about it. In a clinical setting, you see all kinds of people. You ask them if they drink, they say ’just a little, occasionally,’ but in reality, they down half a jin of baijiu every day, minimum. You ask if they’re watching their diet, they say they’re eating very light, but then their blood test shows lipids so high they could jam the machine. You’ll get used to it once you’ve seen enough.”

Chen Hao nodded thoughtfully.

”Next.”

This time, a middle-aged man in his fifties walked in, carrying a large, striped woven bag.

”Sir, what seems to be the problem?” Chen Hao asked proactively.

”Dizzy. I’ve been dizzy for three days. Today the whole world is spinning, and I feel like throwing up,” the man said in a thick accent.

Chen Hao deftly wrapped the cuff around his arm, squeezed the bulb to inflate it, and then watched the mercury column as he slowly released the air.

The moment he saw the reading on the scale, Chen Hao’s brows furrowed.

180/110 mmHg.

”Sir, do you have high blood pressure?” Chen Hao asked, removing the cuff, his expression serious.

The man waved his hands dismissively, his tone firm. ”No, no. I’m perfectly healthy.”

Chen Hao glanced at Zhao Yumin, then continued, ”But your blood pressure right now is over one-eighty. Are you sure you’ve never been diagnosed with high blood pressure before?”

”Definitely not! I’ve never had high blood pressure,” the man said adamantly.

At this point, Zhao Yumin interjected, ”Sir, have you been taking any kind of blood pressure medication?”

Hearing this, the man said, ”I have! I take that... felodipine! One pill a day.”

Chen Hao was completely stunned.

’Felodipine? Isn’t that one of the most common blood pressure medications?’

Chen Hao tried to straighten out the logic. ”Sir, you just said you don’t have high blood pressure, so why are you taking felodipine?”

The man looked at Chen Hao as if he were an idiot. ”Because if I don’t take the medicine, my blood pressure goes up! That’s why I take it every day. After I take it, it’s not high anymore!”

Chen Hao’s mouth hung open, feeling like his brain was about to overheat. ”Sir, it’s precisely because you have high blood pressure that you need to take felodipine to control it. That means you are, in fact, a high blood pressure patient.”

The man suddenly grew agitated, pointing at Chen Hao’s nose. ”You young folks just talk nonsense! The medicine cured me! My blood pressure isn’t high now, so I don’t have high blood pressure! Don’t you go around cursing me with diseases!”

Chen Hao was completely petrified.

’What kind of logic is that?’

Zhao Yumin nodded calmly. ”So, you’re dizzy today. Is it because you haven’t taken your felodipine on time for the past couple of days?”

The man slapped his thigh again. ”You’re a miracle doctor! I went back to my hometown for a couple of days and forgot my medicine. I haven’t taken it for two days, and today I got so dizzy I couldn’t even stand up.”
