I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 215: Chapter 150: Something More Precious Than Gold

’I never thought... he’d come all this way to talk to me about programming?’

Jiang He explained, ”I’m currently pushing forward a research project on an early prediction model for severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). I’d like you to help me write some programs. Besides helping me screen data, I also hope you can develop software for automatic detection and alerts later on.”

”If you’re willing to cooperate with me and join my team, I will cover all of your mother’s future medical expenses, including subsequent maintenance therapy and nutritional support.”

Feng Ye froze in place.

Jiang He continued, ”Of course, this is a mutual decision. If you’re not willing, that’s fine too. I will still help optimize your mother’s current medication plan to minimize the side effects, or help you apply for a spot in the hospital’s free trial drug program to lighten your burden.”

His words were flawless, leaving no room for objection.

Feng Ye listened, completely stunned.

He muttered, ”But... but the follow-up treatment, plus nutritional support... the doctors said it could cost well over a hundred thousand... maybe even more.”

Jiang He looked at him and gave a faint smile.

”It’s alright. What I want to do is something that will change the world. Once this predictive model is established, it will be able to snatch tens of thousands of lives back from Death’s grasp every year.”

”You’ll be helping me, and I’ll be paying you a salary of over a hundred thousand. No matter how you slice it, I’m the one getting the better end of this deal.”

Silence.

Feng Ye didn’t know how to react. He was completely bewildered.

Jiang He’s tone softened. ”It’s okay. This concerns your future career path, so you can think it over. There’s no rush to answer...”

Before he could finish his sentence.

”I agree!”

Feng Ye jerked his head up. ”I agree! Dr. Jiang, I agree!”

During that moment of silence,

Feng Ye’s mind had been racing.

He thought about the pain of being forced to sell his blood for two thousand yuan; the despair of watching over his mother’s bedside day and night, powerless to help as she suffered; the smile that would soon return to her face...

All these emotions, long suppressed deep in his heart, detonated the moment Jiang He made his offer.

It was like a man drowning in the depths of the ocean, struggling on the verge of death, who was suddenly yanked to the surface and could breathe air again.

Tears streamed from his eyes.

All the strength and composure he had feigned for months completely crumbled.

With a THUD,

Feng Ye dropped straight to his knees before Jiang He.

”Thank you... Thank you, Dr. Jiang! Thank you for saving my mom!”

Tears and snot streamed down his face as he slammed his head to the floor.

Jiang He immediately bent down to help him up.

On his first try, he couldn’t even budge him.

’This kid is really going at it.’

’Is he trying to kill himself?’

As Jiang He pulled him up forcefully, he could actually understand how Feng Ye was feeling.

If it had been him in his past life,

during those desperate days, if someone had come up to him and said they could save Teacher Shen,

he would have done exactly as Feng Ye was doing now, without a moment’s hesitation, even if it meant kneeling in the snow and kowtowing a thousand times.

”Get up.”

Jiang He hauled Feng Ye up from the floor.

”A man’s pride is worth more than gold. You’re a genius; your skills are more valuable than gold. We’re partners in this. There’s no need for this.”

Feng Ye was still sobbing, mumbling something incomprehensible.

Jiang He wanted to make a joke: ’You’re not secretly cursing me, are you?’

But on second thought, he decided against it. This probably wasn’t the right time for jokes...

...

「Ten minutes later, in the hospital room.」

Wu Lan was startled when her son rushed over, his face streaked with tears. ”Son, what is it? What did the doctor say? Is it...”

Feng Ye grabbed his mother’s hand and knelt by her bed, laughing and crying at the same time.

”Mom, our family has met a benefactor, a great benefactor... Dr. Jiang said he’s going to hire me. Not only is the salary high, but he’s also going to cover all of your future medical costs...”

Wu Lan was stunned, finding it hard to believe.

In a world filled with scammers and indifference, the first reaction of the poor is always caution.

”Son, you haven’t been scammed, have you? How can there be someone that good in the world? What could they possibly want from us? What kind of job pays that much money...?”

”No, Mom, no way. He’s the River God of Affiliated Hospital No. 1. Everyone knows him. He wouldn’t trick me. Don’t worry, please don’t worry...”

Just then, Feng Ye’s father walked over, his face etched with exhaustion.

”Dear...” Wu Lan called out, her voice trembling.

Feng Ye turned, took his father’s rough hand, and recounted everything that had just happened, word for word.

His father’s face was a mask of bewilderment. ”?”

He stood frozen, mouth agape, completely speechless.

After a long while, this man, whose back had been bent by the hardships of life, tremblingly reached a hand into his inner pocket.

He felt the red envelope.

It was the same one he had tried to give to Chen Hao the previous night but hadn’t managed to.

Inside was the last bit of money their family had left, money that was supposed to be a final, desperate payment for his wife’s life—a payment meant to extinguish their son’s last flicker of hope.

’He wanted to give this red envelope to Jiang He...’

But then he looked at his wife in the hospital bed, her hope rekindled, and at his son kneeling beside her, weeping in relief now that his heavy burden was finally lifted.

And he suddenly realized that for a kindness so immense—one that had single-handedly dragged his family of three out of Hell—

how could this little red envelope possibly be enough?

’In this lifetime, even if he were to work like an animal, how could he ever repay such a debt?’

After a long silence, the father spoke. ”Son, we may be poor, but we must always repay our debts of gratitude.”

Feng Ye messily wiped the tears from his face.

”Yeah,” he said. ”From now on, whatever he needs, I’ll code it.”

—People always lament the value of gold, but they don’t realize that being saved and recognized in a moment of desperation is something that a thousand pieces of gold cannot buy.
