I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 202: Chapter 146: Dr. Jiang Can Finally Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Jiang He was silent for two seconds, then said,

”Oh.”

This was no time for pleasantries. Knowing when to go with the flow was a form of wisdom.

As he drew closer, the mattress dipped slightly.

Shen Yu’s body instinctively shrank toward the edge of the bed.

”I’m getting in.”

”...Mhm.”

Jiang He lifted a corner of the covers and slipped into bed.

To avoid touching her, he primly folded his hands over his stomach, kept his legs together, and, like Kars, stopped thinking.

The room fell silent once more.

One minute passed, then two.

The two of them lay there, ramrod straight. Neither moved. Even their breathing seemed to be strangely in sync.

Jiang He found the atmosphere unbearable.

Although his eyes were closed, his senses felt infinitely amplified in the darkness.

’My wife... so damn tempting.’

”So...” Jiang He was the first to break the silence.

”What is it?” Shen Yu’s voice was stiff, full of caution.

Jiang He chose his words carefully.

”About the glass... I swear I didn’t spill it on purpose. If I had, wouldn’t that make me a... dip?”

It took Shen Yu a full three seconds to realize Jiang He was making a pun. A terrible one, at that.

Sometimes, a joke is so bad you can’t help but laugh.

Shen Yu sighed. ”Dr. Jiang, I recommend you avoid telling jokes like that in the future.”

”I thought it was pretty funny...”

”Now *that* sentence, I find pretty funny. A little cute, even.”

”Really? Heh heh.”

”What are you laughing at? You really think that was a compliment?”

”Huh? It wasn’t?”

”Idiot!” Shen Yu’s tone shifted. ”Come on, fess up... Did you learn this trick from me?”

Jiang He froze. ”What trick?”

”Playing dumb, are we?” Shen Yu huffed softly. ”My bed got wet before, which is how we ended up squeezing onto one bed.”

Jiang He immediately protested his innocence. ”It really wasn’t! I swear, it wasn’t on purpose.”

”Who knows~”

”I... I can’t defend myself.” Jiang He sighed, giving up the struggle. ”Fine. Just assume I did it on purpose. In that case, may I ask, Teacher Shen, what is your verdict for my incredibly clumsy attempt at imitation?”

Shen Yu replied, ”I sentence you to life imprisonment. You are to lie here obediently and not cross the line.”

Jiang He heard ”life imprisonment” and his mind twisted it into ”imprisonment without a wife,” a truly terrifying sentence.

So he quickly declared, ”Understood. I promise not to move an inch.”

The conversation ended, and the room fell quiet again.

But this time, the silence felt a little more relaxed than before.

Before long, however, the old problem resurfaced.

As the cold air from the AC blew, the gap between them grew cold, and the temperature under the covers began to drop.

Jiang He spoke again. ”Teacher Shen.”

”What is it now?”

”Are you cold?”

When Shen Yu heard this question, alarm bells suddenly went off in her head.

’Here we go,’ she thought. ’That familiar opening line! He’s not going to call the front desk for another blanket, is he?’

”I’m not cold,” Shen Yu answered decisively, trying to shut down any of his schemes. ”The AC is set just right, the blanket is warm, and I’m not cold at all.”

”Oh.” Jiang He paused. ”But there’s a draft coming through the middle of the blanket. The cold air is blowing right on your back.”

Shen Yu was unmoved. ”If I say I’m not cold, I’m not cold. If you’re cold, just wrap the blanket tighter around yourself.”

Jiang He just said, ”Oh.”

Then, he reached out, grabbed the blanket, and tugged it toward his side.

Shen Yu instinctively gripped the edge of the blanket.

For a moment, Jiang He couldn’t even budge it.

An idea struck him. He used a little more force and, in one swift motion, pulled the blanket—and her with it—over to his side.

Shen Yu felt the blanket behind her suddenly go taut.

In the next second, she fell backward, crashing against a warm, broad back.

Her body instantly went rigid.

”What are you doing! You promised not to cross the line!”

”I didn’t cross the line. I just pulled the blanket tighter to stop the draft. You’re the one who fell backward. That’s not my fault, is it?”

”You! You’re cheating!”

”Alright, alright. I was just worried you’d catch a cold. We’re heading back to the Capital City soon, and I’d worry if you got sick.”

”You... I... Fine...”

With just one sentence, he soothed Shen Yu’s ruffled feathers.

After a moment, once they had more or less adjusted to the new position, Jiang He asked again, ”Teacher Shen.”

”Yes?”

”Are you... mad at me?”

Shen Yu paused. ”Why would I be mad at you?”

”For being so clumsy when I was getting your clothes earlier.”

Shen Yu’s heart skipped a beat.

’He’s dropping the act? Is he laying his cards on the table? Is he about to confess that he deliberately didn’t grab my underwear?’

But then she heard Jiang He continue in earnest, ”I have to admit, I was slow grabbing your clothes because my mind was somewhere else. I saw that your suitcase didn’t just have pajamas, but also silk stockings and... other things. I was just thinking that I’d never seen you wear them, and I got distracted. That’s why I was slow.”

Shen Yu: ”?”

Jiang He added, ”Sorry, sorry. You probably got cold waiting in the bathroom for so long.”

Shen Yu: ”...”

She slowly closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and let it out just as slowly.

’So after all that, this blockhead thought I was mad at him for being *slow* with the clothes?!’

’And silk stockings! Stockings my ass! And that dreadful Liu Xiaotian! She just had to stuff those things in my suitcase. Great! I could just die of embarrassment!’

Jiang He was still rambling on with his self-criticism. ”I’m sorry, I’ll be more careful next time...”

”Jiang He,” Shen Yu cut in coldly.

”Here.”

”Shut up and go to sleep.”

Jiang He shrewdly detected the dangerous, explosive undertones in her voice. He wisely chose to drop the subject and obediently shut his mouth. ”Okay. Good night.”

In truth, neither of them felt the least bit sleepy.

Shen Yu’s plan was to wait for Jiang He to fall asleep so she could finally relax. Jiang He’s plan was to wait for Shen Yu to fall asleep so *he* could finally relax.

And so, the two of them entered a standoff, stubbornly trying to outlast each other.

On top of that, Jiang He kept inching toward the edge of the bed, trying to give Shen Yu more space to sleep.

「Half an hour later.」

”Jiang He,” Shen Yu suddenly said.

Jiang He answered immediately. ”Hm? Did I wake you?”

”Are you about to fall off the bed?”

”Nope,” Jiang He said, trying to sound tough. ”I’ve got great core strength.”

The words had barely left his mouth when... WHOOSH.

Jiang He’s body lost its balance completely, and he started sliding off the bed.

Just as he was about to tumble onto the carpet, tangled in the blanket, he instinctively reached out to grab something to steady himself.

In the darkness, his hand clamped down on the blanket.

The same blanket that was wrapped snugly around Shen Yu.

The powerful tug sent Shen Yu off balance as well.

”Ah!”

Pulled by gravity, the two of them, along with the large blanket, tumbled toward the floor.

THUD.

Jiang He hit the carpet first with a solid, muffled thud.

Before he could even catch his breath, Shen Yu came down right after, landing squarely on top of him.

He steadied himself, and just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he realized his chest was being pressed down by a very distinct and undeniable softness.

Jiang He: ”...”

Shen Yu: ”...”

Shen Yu’s hand was still clenched tightly around the collar of Jiang He’s pajamas.

Their faces were so close they could feel each other’s breath.

To make matters worse... because Shen Yu was lying prone on top of him, Jiang He could feel it clearly.

She wasn’t wearing a bra.

Jiang He’s breath caught in his throat.

After a moment of panic, Shen Yu also realized their current predicament, and her cheeks instantly flushed so red it looked as if they might bleed.

If the awkwardness before had been buffered by a blanket, now it was just...

”You...” Shen Yu scrambled, trying to get off him. ”Let me up.”

Jiang He blurted out, completely on instinct, ”Don’t.”

Shen Yu froze.

Jiang He froze, too.

The moment the word left his mouth, Jiang He wanted to slap himself.

’What the hell was I thinking?!’ he thought. ’What kind of stupid, overbearing CEO line was that?!’

”No, that’s not what I meant...” Jiang He explained hastily. ”Don’t move, you might get tangled in the blanket and twist your ankle.”

Shen Yu was too mortified to speak.

She lay silently on top of him. In truth... a part of her heart longed for this embrace.

And so, under Jiang He’s slightly clumsy but firm command, she obediently stopped moving.

In the darkness, the two remained in their ambiguous posture, lying on the hotel’s soft carpet.

Time seemed to stretch on.

Jiang He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath.

He smelled the fresh scent of shampoo in her hair and felt the softness and warmth of her body.

Memories of his past life came flooding back like a tide. For countless days and nights, they had slept just like this, in each other’s arms.

’To hell with confessing or not.’

’To hell with being official or not.’

Right now, he just wanted to hold her.

’Just holding her... that’s not against the rules, is it?’

And so, Jiang He slowly raised his arms. He gently circled one around her waist, while his other hand came to rest on the back of her head, guiding it down to his chest.

Shen Yu trembled.

She didn’t struggle or speak, but simply let herself rest against his broad chest.

At first, Jiang He could feel her body was tense in his embrace.

A nineteen-year-old girl would be instinctively nervous in the face of such intimacy.

Her breathing was shallow, her warm breath puffing against his collar like a frightened little animal.

Jiang He said nothing, simply holding her with quiet steadiness.

Gradually, as time passed, the sound of his steady heartbeat soothed her panic away.

Her tense shoulders slowly relaxed. Then, a warm sleepiness washed over her like a gentle tide.

It was the kind of drowsiness that comes only when one feels completely safe, able to let down all their guards.

Shen Yu shifted slightly in his arms, finding the perfect angle to nestle into.

Before they knew it, they had been holding each other like that in the pile of blankets for about an hour.

Jiang He could tell the woman in his arms was already half-asleep.

But he knew that no matter how soft the carpet was, sleeping in this position all night would be uncomfortable.

He lowered his head slightly, his lips almost brushing her ear, and whispered, ”Teacher Shen, let’s go sleep on the bed.”

”Mmm...” Shen Yu murmured sleepily, giving a soft, instinctive reply. ”Okay...”

Jiang He tightened his arms and smoothly lifted her from the carpet in a princess carry.

Being suddenly lifted into the air, Shen Yu instinctively wrapped her arms around Jiang He’s neck, her head naturally finding its place in the crook of his neck.

Jiang He gently placed her in the center of the bed.

Then, he lay down beside her and pulled the blanket over them both.

This time, there was no drafty gap between them, and no more inhibitions.

Jiang He pulled her into his arms.

Shen Yu leaned into his embrace, found the most comfortable position, and nestled in.

Every movement felt perfectly natural, as if they were always meant to sleep in each other’s arms.

This night, they were destined to be undisturbed.

No life-or-death calls from the ER, no sudden emergencies. His phone was on silent.

The exhaustion from working around the clock for days on end, the tension of the operating table, the urgency and anxiety about the future that had weighed on his heart ever since his rebirth—all of it seemed to be washed away, purified by the warmth and softness in his arms.

The tightly wound string deep in his soul was finally allowed to go slack, if only for a moment.

He closed his eyes, listening to the even breaths of the woman in his arms, and a profound sense of peace washed over him.

Spanning twenty years of life and death.

Dr. Jiang could finally get a good night’s sleep.
