Rebirth before Apocalypse: My Whole Family are Bigshots!

A middle-aged man with a cold demeanor sat on the chair.

His face showed no emotion, neither sadness nor joy, and he wasn’t using any superpower.

But just by sitting there, Song Hongfei could feel the chill spreading throughout the room.

His face was cold and stern, with sharp eyebrows that made him extraordinarily handsome. Even though he was middle-aged, many young girls still turned their heads to look at him.

Song Hongfei looked at the Base Commander of Yunhua Safety Base, but in his mind, he couldn’t help but recall the young man he had met only once today.

If the Base Commander were a few years younger, he and today’s young man would look exactly alike, with very similar features.

”The three Zombie Kings in Shanghai have been very active lately. They seem to be looking for someone. Your mission this time is to find out who they are searching for,” the Base Commander’s cold voice rang out.

Yunhua Safety Base is not lacking in powerful superpower users, like Song Hongfei, who never needed to collect tasks from the mission hall.

His tasks were directly assigned by the Base Commander.

”Alright!”

Song Hongfei paused for a moment, then slowly nodded his head.

He was well aware of the matter of three powerful Zombie Kings in Shanghai and knew these three Zombie Kings were extremely cowardly and cherished their lives. They always stayed inside the building and never came out.

”Why have they come out this time?” Song Hongfei was somewhat puzzled.

Those three Zombie Kings really knew how to lie low. It wasn’t until the building was surrounded by a horde of zombies and the Base Commander personally went to inspect it that anyone realized there were three Zombie Kings hiding inside!

Too reclusive!

The Base Commander’s expression remained unchanged, his voice still steady.

”Recently, a Zombie King arrived in Shanghai, and the other Zombie Kings are all obeying him.”

The cold voice paused for a moment and then continued.

”In other words, he should be an emperor among zombies.”

Upon hearing the Base Commander’s words, Song Hongfei frowned tightly.

The Zombie Kings already constituted a catastrophic disaster for humans. If more Zombie Kings arrived, human status would be in jeopardy.

But if an emperor did appear among the Zombie Kings, there would certainly be a great battle between humans and zombies.

The people from the Fire Phoenix Safety Base in D City bragged shamelessly about going to war with the Zombie Kings, but it was just a minor skirmish.

Later, they were scared off by something in the Yellow River and fled in panic.

The scene of the Base Commander outlasting the Zombie King was still vivid, but if he really fought against the Zombie Emperor, humans would need to deploy heavy weapons to protect the last remaining pure land.

Just imagine, a human-zombie war, with humans continually dying, while more and more zombies return...

Zombies would only increase in numbers.

”This time, humans truly face a major crisis.”

Song Hongfei rubbed his temples, showing a touch of weariness on his face.

He had thought the apocalypse already tormented humans enough, but actually, the path ahead would become even harder to predict.

The Base Commander said nothing else; although his face showed no expression, his eyes looked sharp.

He quietly watched the computer, the dull white light casting on his face, giving him an even colder appearance.

The computer couldn’t access the internet, but it could communicate over a local area network within the building, forming a small network.

Usually, people in Yunhua Safety Base used this for work.

The person who set up the local area network was none other than the Base Commander of Yunhua Safety Base himself.

Not only did he possess a strong superpower, but his technological knowledge was almost impeccable.

”I saw someone today.”

Song Hongfei looked at that stern face and suddenly said a sentence.

The Base Commander glanced at Song Hongfei, appearing uninterested. On his ascetic face, there was never any trace of curiosity.

He spoke, whether you listened or not.

He seemed uninterested in anything.

”Ahem, before answering this question, can I ask about your personal affairs?”

Song Hongfei coughed lightly, his eyes flickering with gossip.

Before the apocalypse, he knew the Base Commander, and what he heard and saw included no gossip about the Base Commander.

No woman ever stood by his side, nor was there any rumor of his interest in any woman.

There were even rumors questioning his orientation.

Song Hongfei’s probing question didn’t receive a response from the Base Commander.

This idle talk was something the Base Commander always ignored.

”Do you have an illegitimate son?”

Song Hongfei’s mind flashed back to the young man’s face he saw just now. Gathering courage, he used all his curiosity.

The sound of typing on the keyboard came to an abrupt halt.

The chill in the room instantly intensified.

”No.”

The Base Commander’s voice was extremely cold.

He would never do anything to betray his wife, so how could he have an illegitimate child?

He had only one, his only biological son.

More than twenty years ago, his brother coveted his fortune and kidnapped and abandoned his child, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

Later, that so-called brother died, and his wife fell ill from that incident and never recovered.

Since then, he has been the only one left in his family.

There was never an illegitimate child before, nor would there be one after.

”Sorry, I was just asking.” Song Hongfei scratched his head, stepped back silently to avoid the swirling chill, and muttered under his breath, ”I saw someone today that looked a bit like you, just asking casually.”

”Who?”

The Base Commander looked at Song Hongfei, and perhaps it was Song Hongfei’s imagination, but he seemed to catch a fleeting glimpse of hope in his eyes.

This look was the first time Song Hongfei had seen in the Base Commander’s eyes.

”I don’t know, met him on the way, might have been mistaken.”

Song Hongfei, under the Base Commander’s gaze, felt a chill run down his spine, sensing that the Base Commander’s look was even more terrifying than that of the Zombie Kings.

”Get out.”

The Base Commander withdrew his gaze and continued to look at the computer in front of him.

The eyes, earlier cold and stern, now bore a hint of unnoticeable melancholy.

Song Hongfei felt something was off, that the Base Commander seemed particularly difficult to deal with today.

He didn’t think too much; surely the always cold Base Commander couldn’t really have a son in his twenties!

Song Hongfei patted his stomach, empty and flat, thinking of his own son cooking at home, weakly greeted with a word, and turned away.

A creak.

Song Hongfei’s closing of the door left the Base Commander alone.

His fingers, which had been typing away at the keyboard, suddenly stopped, and he pulled out a pocket watch from his jacket.

The pocket watch was broken, its hands quietly halted where they were, even its surface had lost a layer of paint.

When the pocket watch was opened, inside was a small photo.

In the photo, there was a warm family of three, a gentle and pretty woman holding a baby just a month old, smiling softly.

The woman wore a light pink cheongsam, which did not make her look garish but instead showcased the woman’s elegance, revealing a classical beauty with intellectual grace.

Beside the woman stood a man with a faint smile on his face; his smile melted like a millennium-old glacier, and though dressed in a suit, he seemed to shed all his coldness.

The small baby wore an innocent expression, his features very similar to the man in the suit.

Clearly, a blissful family of three.

Warmth, softness, happiness...
