Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 800: Chapter 802: Who are you trying to impress by hanging yourself?

Bai Ruozhu found it strange as well, but aside from playing with Chu Hai like a toy for a while, Bai Ruolan didn’t do anything else in the room.

By night, Chu Hai’s condition had finally stabilized, but there was no news from Diao Yao. Ruozhu massaged her temples before letting Cui Fan send someone to keep a watch. Only then did she go to bed with her son.

By noon the next day, Bai Zehao returned home with a grim face. Seeing this, Wan Caiyue asked, ”Husband, are you feeling unwell? Should Ruozhu take a look at you?”

Bai Ruozhu heard her and looked at her big brother, immediately realizing that it wasn’t a physical discomfort plaguing him but something on his mind.

She found an opportunity to talk to him alone, ”Big Brother, what’s wrong?” Her intuition told her his strange mood was definitely related to Xiaoning.

Bai Zehao sighed, regret shining in his eyes, ”Xiaoning tried to hang herself last night. She was discovered by someone from the shop and saved just in time...” His voice choked as he continued, ”Did we misunderstand her and push her too hard? That girl is too proud, maybe she felt insulted, so...”

He stopped speaking, only continuing after a while. ”I visited her today. She was lying there lifelessly. It made me think of Ruolan. Do you think she’ll end up like Ruolan?”

Most of the embroiderers in the shop lived in the backyard of the shop, from where they could visit their families regularly. Since Xiaoning’s father was in poor health, she spent more time at home, but most of her time was spent in the shop.

Bai Ruozhu sneered, ”You don’t need to blame yourself, Big Brother. Isn’t Xiaoning filial? If she truly was, she wouldn’t have attempted to end her own life, leaving her father behind. And what could push her to death anyway? If she was truly grateful to you, she wouldn’t resent you. After all, you don’t owe her anything.”

”You...You don’t understand. I rejected her yesterday afternoon,” Bai Zehao said, much to his chagrin. It was embarrassing for him to admit to his sister that a young lady had confessed to him.

Bai Ruozhu’s smile held a touch of contempt, ”Big Brother, you did the right thing rejecting her. Moreover, you would surely not have embarrassed her in public, what does she have to feel insulted about? It seems like she was trying to gain sympathy, so even if she tried to hang herself, her life wouldn’t be in real danger. You don’t need to worry too much.”

Then her face turned cold again. ”Xiaoning is far too manipulative. Our shop can’t afford such people, otherwise, it will mess up the rules of the shop. Think about it, Big Brother, if she was truly grateful to you, she wouldn’t have chosen to hang herself in our shop. If she really didn’t want to live anymore, she could have done it at her own home. Isn’t she repaying kindness with ingratitude by trying to hang herself in our shop? So, who was she doing it for?”

Bai Zehao’s furrowed brows began to ease as he listened to his sister’s words. His mind cleared considerably on her explanation. Ruozhu was right. Whether Xiaoning did it purposely for him to see or she was ungrateful, she wasn’t a good girl. He mistook her for being kind, filial, and ambitious and tried to help her out of goodwill. He did not expect her to have such hidden motives.

”But we just dismissed her after her attempted suicide. Wouldn’t people accuse us of lacking compassion and being wealthy but heartless?” Bai Zehao asked, concerned.

”I’ll have someone send her home to recuperate later. The shop will cover the costs of her medication and supplements. Big Brother, you better refrain from visiting the shop in the next few days, to avoid her pestering you again. With things escalated to this point, she might be desperate now. But considering your status, there’s no need for you to get dragged into this. When she’s better, there’s no need for her to come back,” Bai Ruozhu suggested.

”But what excuse should we use to fire her then?” Bai Zehao, being kind, raised his question. Many shopkeepers would dismiss their workers without giving any reason. If Zehao didn’t want to employ someone anymore, he would dismiss them. But even if the person was not suitable, he would explain the reason.

”We’ll think about it when the time comes. If nothing works, we’ll just say we have enough staff in the shop. Given her unstable mental state, it’d be better for her to rest well at home. Besides, she doesn’t need to repay the money you lent her for medical expenses, so what does she have to worry about?” Bai Ruozhu suggested.

Bai Zehao nodded in agreement, ”Ruozhu, you are right, we will do as you say.”

There was no need for Bai Ruozhu to get personally involved, she simply instructed the manager to handle it. In the afternoon, the manager returned to report that Xiaoning had adamantly refused to leave, claiming that the money from the work she did in the shop was for her father’s medical treatment. If she left, they wouldn’t be able to live.

Somehow, the manager, having been with Lin Zhenghui for a long time, had handled such situations before. He then took out the money for the medication and nourishment in front of everyone in the shop and gave it to Xiaoning. He said, ”You girl, you always overthink. Master is sympathetic and didn’t want to see you suffer, so he thought you should go home and rest well for a few days. Look, he even paid for your medication and nourishment.”

”No, no, I think I’ve offended the master. He wants to drive me away. I won’t be able to survive,” Xiaoning cried out.

Turning to the shopkeeper with a wry smile, the manager said, ”The doctor mentioned that she isn’t mentally stable. Perhaps it’ll be better for her to be with her family. It’s not good if she gets excited and upsets the shop’s customers.”

The shopkeeper also felt it was odd for Xiaoning to suddenly attempt suicide, especially with her current emotional frenzy. He worried if she had lost her mind and, fearing liability, immediately said, ”Manager Liu is right. Aren’t you the most filial? It’s also good to spend some time with your father at home.”

In the end, Xiaoning couldn’t make a scene with the manager and the shopkeeper and was sent home. The moment she entered the house, her father saw the bruises on her neck and immediately fainted.

The manager then found a doctor for Xiaoning’s father and prescribed some calming medication, and only then did he leave the house.

When Bai Ruozhu informed Bai Zehao about the incident, she added, ”If Xiaoning is truly filial, seeing her father in this state, she should regret her actions by now. She shouldn’t bother you anymore. I fear she was just trying to make a good name for herself and didn’t really care about her father.”

Bai Zehao shook his head. ”I was blind to have helped an ungrateful person.”

Seeing her big brother feeling disheartened, Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but laugh, ”That’s not true. It’s because you are too charming, Big Brother. That’s why the young lady harbored feelings for you. Otherwise, she would have set her sights on someone else.”

Bai Zehao’s face reddened up to the base of his neck as he said bashfully, ”I am not charming. It’s just that sister-in-law didn’t dislike me.”

Bai Ruozhu rolled her eyes, ”Your wife chose you for who you are. She has been with you through thick and thin, during our poor days, even when our reputation was not good. Now that we are doing well, those who are interested in you are mainly attracted by your wealth. Think about it, if we were still as poor as before, would Xiaoning be clinging to you like this?”

Bai Zehao became introspective. True, considering the Wan Family’s status during that time, Caiyue could have married someone richer. She had been with him since their younger days. Compared to that, a girl who appeared just recently was nothing.
