Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Bangalore

In mid-October 1948, the crisp autumn air of Bangalore was filled with the clear, bright sunlight characteristic of the Deccan plateau. At the sprawling campus of Bharat Aeronautics Limited (BAL), located adjacent to the military airfield, an historic gathering of defence scientists, aviation engineers, and government leaders had assembled inside the high-tech Propulsion Testing Hangar.

Inside the massive concrete and steel facility, two distinct jet engine prototypes rested on heavy iron test benches, hooked up to complex diagnostic instruments, fuel lines, digital thrust meters, and exhaust funnels.

Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta had flown in from Delhi to personally inspect the results of the 1-Kilonewton (1 kN) Jet Engine Design Competition. Accompanying Ram were BAL Chairman Dr V. M. Ghatage, Director-General of Technical Development Dr Krishnakant Sharma, and senior representatives from the Ministry of Defence.

Standing near the test benches were the world-class foreign specialists whom India had recruited following the end of World War II, a grand intake of nearly seven hundred scientists, engineers, and master technicians brought covertly to Indian shores through the scientific diplomacy and global academic networks of Dr Homi Bhabha, Dr Vikram Sarabhai, and Sir C. V. Raman.

Among them, ten Japanese propulsion engineers of the Yatagarasu Design Bureau stood under the leadership of their brilliant chief designer, Dr Yamada. Opposite them were twenty European engineers of the Wieland Design Bureau, led by the legendary German aeronautical engineer, Kurt Tank. Every single foreign researcher was paired with precisely five Indian engineering apprentices, creating an intense, hands-on understudy system designed to rapidly build domestic technical mastery.

Dr Ghatage stepped forward, holding a technical ledger bound in black leather.

”Prime Minister, distinguished leaders,” Dr Ghatage announced, his voice echoing through the spacious hangar. ”Before we present the test results of today’s competition, let us revisit the overarching strategic objective that governs this enterprise. Today’s 1-Kilonewton competition is merely step one on a magnificent technological ladder-climbing. Our ultimate national goal is to design, build, and manufacture an indigenous, Indian-made, jet-powered supersonic interceptor!”

Ghatage walked over to a wide drafting board mounted on the wall. ”To reach that ultimate prize, our national propulsion program is structured in strict, progressive thrust tiers: we begin with this 1 kN engine, advance immediately to a 5 kN competition, proceed to 10 kN, 15 kN, and 25 kN benchmarks, and ultimately collaborate with our master foreign partners to build a world-class 35-to-40 kilonewton afterburning turbojet capable of propelling a sovereign frontline fighter beyond Mach 1.5!”

The gathered audience of young Indian apprentices and senior officers listened in spellbound attention. Ghatage turned toward the test benches.

”For this foundational 1 kN competition,” Ghatage continued, ”both bureaus were tasked with creating a compact gas turbine operating on standard kerosene fuel, capable of domestic mass production using materials available within our national supply chain.”

Ghatage gestured toward the first bench. ”The Wieland Design Bureau, led by Herr Kurt Tank, developed an axial-flow jet engine prototype. While axial-flow configurations theoretically offer higher aerodynamic efficiency and smaller frontal area for high-speed flight, Herr Tank’s prototype encountered significant technical hurdles at this micro-scale. The microscopic tolerance requirements for the axial compressor blades led to frequent aerodynamic stalls and blade vibrations, presenting a manufacturing complexity that currently exceeds our domestic precision casting capacity.”

Ghatage then walked over to the second test bench, where a stouter, mechanically elegant engine rested.

”The Yatagarasu Design Bureau, led by Dr Yamada,” Ghatage reported, ”chose a single-stage centrifugal compressor design. While slightly larger in diameter, Dr Yamada’s 1 kN engine demonstrated absolute mechanical stability, zero compressor stalls, exceptional fuel efficiency, and remarkable simplicity in its component parts. During its seventy-two-hour continuous bench trial, it consistently generated 1.05 kilonewtons of stable thrust without a single mechanical glitch!”

”Demonstrate the engine,” Ram ordered calmly, stepping up to the reinforced observation window.

Dr Yamada bowed politely, signalling his control team. An Indian apprentice engineer, barely twenty-five years old, stepped up to the main throttle board, flipping the ignition switches.

A high-pitched electric starter motor began to whine, spinning the centrifugal rotor up to speed. Within seconds, a compressed air jet injected fuel into the combustion chamber, catching fire with a deep, muffled whoosh. The turbine spun into a blinding blur. The thrust gauge mounted on the wall climbed smoothly: 0.4 kN... 0.7 kN... 1.0 kN... 1.05 kN!

The sharp, high-pitched scream of the jet turbine filled the hangar, a clean, stable, powerful roar that vibrated through the floorboards. For five continuous minutes, the engine ran at maximum military throttle, its temperatures and pressures remaining perfectly within green operational parameters, before the young Indian apprentice smoothly pulled the throttle back to shut down.

Silence fell over the hangar, broken only by the quiet cooling ticks of the turbine casing.

Ram stepped out from behind the observation window, walking over to the test bench alongside Dr Ghatage. He turned to the gathered scientific leadership.

”Dr Yamada, Herr Tank, gentlemen,” Ram said, looking at both teams. ”The performance we have witnessed today is a remarkable milestone. The Yatagarasu Design Bureau under Dr Yamada has delivered a brilliant, mechanically sound, and highly reliable engine. I hereby declare the Yatagarasu Bureau the official winner of the 1 kN Jet Engine Competition!”

Dr Yamada and his nine Japanese colleagues bowed deeply in unison, while their fifty Indian apprentices broke into loud applause.

”The Government of India awards a cash bonus of 2,000 US dollars to the Japanese engineers of the Yatagarasu Bureau for their winning design,” Ram announced. He then turned to Kurt Tank. ”And to Herr Tank and the Wieland Bureau, we award a bonus of 1,000 US dollars for completing their axial prototype under tight deadlines. Your work on axial mechanics will prove vital as we move to the higher thrust tiers.”

Kurt Tank bowed respectfully. ”Thank you, Prime Minister. The axial flow will prove its superiority when we reach the higher thrust classes.”

Ram turned to Dr Ghatage. ”Dr Ghatage, as head of aeronautical developments, explain to us the immediate practical deployments of this 1 kN engine while our main fighter program proceeds.”

Dr Ghatage stepped up to the drafting board, pointing to two distinct charts.

”Prime Minister, a 1-kilonewton engine is too small for manned combat aircraft, but its power-to-weight ratio makes it ideal for specialised applications,” Dr Ghatage explained. ”We have identified precisely four high-value applications, two defence, and two for the civilian market.”

Ghatage pointed to the defence chart. ”First, in Defence: This engine will serve as the core turbine for our high-speed, long-range sea-skimming anti-ship cruise missiles to protect our coastlines. Second, it will power high-speed target drones required by the Army and Air Force to simulate enemy jet targets for anti-aircraft gunners and missile batteries.”

Ghatage then pointed to the civilian chart. ”In Civil applications: First, scaled variants will drive high-velocity air blowers deployed in deep underground coal mines across Bihar and Bengal to rapidly flush out toxic gases and dangerous fire-damp, saving thousands of miners’ lives. Second, the engine will power ultra-high-pressure mobile fire pumps for urban and industrial fire brigades, capable of blasting massive streams of water and chemical foam into high-rise blazes and oil refinery fires at extreme volume and speed.”

Ram nodded in absolute approval. ”Logical, precise, and practical.”

Ram then turned to Dr Krishnakant Sharma to finalise the structural reorganisation of the technical personnel.

”Dr Krishnakant, how do we deploy our apprentices and foreign master researchers for the next stage?” Ram asked.

Dr Sharma stepped forward, referring to his administrative assignment chart.

”Prime Minister, of the fifty Indian apprentices trained under the Yatagarasu Bureau, ten senior apprentices will immediately rotate out,” Dr Sharma outlined. ”These ten Indian engineers will teach this 1 kN engine technology in the advanced laboratories of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore. Simultaneously, they will lead the specialised design modifications for the defence anti-ship missile and target drone variants under DRDO, and lead the setup of manufacturing units for the civil air blowers and fire pumps under a Public-Private Partnership model, all with continued technical supervision from Dr Yamada’s team.”

”And the remaining team?” Ram inquired.

”The remaining forty Indian apprentices will stay directly attached to the Yatagarasu Design Bureau; they will be supplemented by additional understudies upon the fresh university intake,” Dr Sharma concluded, his eyes lighting up with ambition. ”Along with Herr Tank’s bureau, they will immediately initiate the next phase of our grand objective: the 5-Kilonewton Jet Engine Competition, commencing tomorrow morning!”

A wave of intense, exhilarated energy swept through the hangar. Young Indian engineers, foreign scientists, and military leaders stood shoulder-to-shoulder, their eyes fixed on the horizon of national self-reliance.

Ram Prasad Gupta looked out across the airfield as the evening sun bathed the broad runways of Bangalore in a warm, golden light, a silent witness to a sovereign Republic stepping steadily, tier by tier, up the ladder of flame and steel toward absolute mastery of the skies.
