Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

New Delhi

The high, vaulted windows of the South Block Cabinet Room looked out over the sweeping expanses of Vijay Chowk, where the late monsoon heat of September had begun to give way to the crisp, dry breath of approaching autumn. Inside, the long mahogany table was littered with military maps, blue-pencilled intelligence summaries, and operational dispatches from the northern high passes. The rhythmic, heavy sweep of brass ceiling fans stirred the air, rustling the edges of the terrain charts laid out before the leadership.

Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta sat at the head of the table, his posture immovably straight, his expression carrying that characteristic calm, unyielding weight that had come to define the executive suite of South Block. To his immediate right sat Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, leaning forward with his hands clasped over his teak walking stick, his hooded eyes scanning the room. To Ram’s left, Jawaharlal Nehru leaned back in his leather chair, a quiet, contemplative expression on his face as he tapped a silver fountain pen against his notepad.

Ranged across the lower half of the table were the commanders of the sovereign Republic’s armed forces: General K. M. Cariappa, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army; Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee; Rear Admiral Ram Das Katari; and B. N. Mullick, the sharp-eyed Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

”Gentlemen,” Ram began, his voice quiet, clear, and instantly commanding the total attention of the room. ”We have gathered today to review our strategic posture across all theatres. Before we turn to the ledgers and intel reports, I wish to formally extend the gratitude of the Cabinet to the service chiefs and to every officer and jawan in the field. The victorious re-conquest of Gilgit-Baltistan and the total clearance of the high passes in Kashmir have secured the northern ramparts of this Republic. The speed, tactical brilliance, and sheer endurance shown by our forces under brutal terrain conditions have fundamentally rewritten the military reality of the subcontinent.”

General Cariappa bowed his head slightly, a rare, prideful warmth breaking through his stern, military demeanour. ”Thank you, Prime Minister. The morale of the troops could not be higher. The all-weather airbridge to Srinagar and the newly completed supply routes up to Leh and Skardu have ensured that our garrisons are fully stocked for the coming winter. For the first time since the outbreak of hostilities, every single sector along the Jammu and Kashmir frontier, from the Pir Panjal to the Karakoram, is entirely quiet.”

”Quiet,” Sardar Patel repeated, his deep voice grunting into the silence. He turned his sharp gaze toward the service chiefs. ”It has been nearly three weeks since the fall of Gilgit. In any ordinary conflict, a state that has suffered such a total, devastating loss of its northern strategic objectives would be beating a path to the United Nations or sending urgent feelers through London for a ceasefire. Yet, from Karachi, we have heard nothing but absolute silence. No formal plea for a ceasefire. No diplomatic overtures. No grand mobilisation speeches from their Cabinet.”

Patel shifted his gaze across the table. ”Mullick, what is your apparatus picking up? Silence from an enemy usually means one of two things: total internal paralysis, or the quiet forging of a knife behind their back.”

N. Mullick adjusted his thin wire-rimmed spectacles and opened a dark leather dossier stamped with the red emblem of the Intelligence Bureau.

”Sardar-sahib, Prime Minister,” Mullick began, placing several decoded intelligence sheets on the table. ”Our network inside Pakistan, both in Karachi and across the provincial capitals, reports a situation that can only be described as suspiciously placid. Domestically, the Pakistani Cabinet is locked in bitter, bureaucratic infighting over food distribution and refugee resettlement. Externally, their diplomatic missions in London and Washington are attempting to downplay the losses in Kashmir, portraying the northern collapse as a mere tactical consolidation.”

Mullick leaned forward, his pencil pointing to a map of the subcontinent. ”However, what concerns the Bureau is the total absence of aggressive troop movements on their side of the Punjab international border. Their regular armoured divisions are pulled back deep inside their permanent garrisons around Lahore and Gujranwala. In East Pakistan, the situation is similarly static. There is no public posturing, no sabre-rattling on the airwaves of Radio Pakistan, and no attempt to seek international intervention. It is an artificial, forced quiet.”

Nehru adjusted his glasses, looking at the map with a thoughtful frown. ”Could it be that the sheer scale of their defeat in Gilgit has shattered their strategic hubris? They spent months believing their covert regulars and tribal lashkars could bleed us in the mountains without drawing a decisive counter-offensive. Now that our forces have crushed their perimeter and secured the entire high-altitude rim, they realise they have no military cards left to play.”

”Perhaps, Jawaharlal,” Ram said calmly, his eyes reflecting a deep, calculating foresight. ”Or perhaps they have realised that open military confrontation with the Republic of India is a ruinous enterprise, and are recalibrating their long-term strategy toward subversion, intelligence gathering, and diplomatic manoeuvring. In either case, victory must never breed complacency in South Block.”

Ram leaned forward, resting his forearms on the mahogany table, his voice taking on an authoritative tone. ”We will not let down our guard. General Cariappa, our operational directives for the autumn and winter months are clear. First, we will maintain a firm, unyielding defensive posture along the entire Jammu and Kashmir line of control. The territories we have liberated are integral parts of the Sovereign Republic, and not an inch of that ground will be conceded.”

”Understood, Prime Minister,” Cariappa replied, taking notes in his leather-bound pad.

”Second,” Ram continued, ”the Corps of Engineers must accelerate all infrastructure works along the northern frontier. The mountain roads, supply depots, bridges, and hardened communications lines from Jammu up to Srinagar, Leh, and Gilgit must be fortified into permanent, all-weather arteries. Our garrisons must never again be dependent on seasonal thaws or vulnerable supply corridors.”

”Third,” Ram looked toward Air Marshal Mukherjee and General Cariappa, ”we must begin a phased, structured rotation of our frontline units. The jawans who have fought through sub-zero blizzards in the high passes must be brought down to lowland garrisons for rest, retraining, and refitting, while fresh, fully equipped brigades take up the defensive lines. We will keep our edge sharp without exhausting our manpower.”

”And finally,” Ram’s voice hardened slightly as he glanced at Mullick, ”we must maintain an unblinking, watchful eye not only on the western frontier, but also on East Pakistan. A quiet border can be a convenient screen behind which covert networks, arms smuggling, and political subversion are organised. Mullick, expand your counter-intelligence grid across the eastern sector immediately. Every railway junction in Bengal and Assam, every riverine transit point, and every diplomatic pouch entering Dacca must be subjected to absolute scrutiny.”

”It shall be done immediately, Prime Minister,” Mullick confirmed, bowing his head.

Sardar Patel nodded in grim satisfaction, tapping his walking stick against the floorboards. ”A fortress is only as strong as its quietest wall. We keep our boots on the ground, our eyes on the horizon, and our foundries running day and night.”

Ram stood up, closing the operational master file on his desk. ”The military campaign has achieved its objectives, gentlemen. Now, we build the industrial and sovereign steel that ensures no foreign power ever dares to challenge these borders again.”

Babina

The warm mid-morning sun of late September beat down upon the sprawling industrial complex near Babina, tucked deep within the rugged plateau of Bundelkhand. Where once stood quiet, scrub-covered hills and ancient stone outcroppings, there now rose a massive, state-of-the-art chemical and industrial citadel. High steel towers, gleaming silver distillation columns, interconnected pipeline networks, and heavy brick manufacturing halls stretched across hundreds of acres, surrounded by double perimeter security fences guarded by armed sentries of the Central Industrial Security Force.

This was the newly completed Babina High Explosives Plant, alongside its twin facility in Bhandara, Maharashtra, the crown jewels of India’s burgeoning sovereign defence production network. Bought from the Soviet Union in exchange for Indian agricultural raw materials, and designed to manufacture high-grade military explosives, propellants, nitrocellulose, TNT, and RDX at an industrial scale, the plants represented a monumental leap forward, eliminating India’s historical reliance on foreign chemical imports.

A grand wooden stage covered in khadi drapery and decorated with garlands of marigolds had been erected at the central plaza of the plant, directly facing the massive main processing facility. Thousands of people had gathered under the bright sun: civil construction workers in stained canvas trousers, Indian chemical engineers, technicians in crisp white lab coats, local administrative officials, and a prominent delegation of Soviet master technicians and chemical engineers who had overseen the installation of the heavy reaction vessels and automated machinery.

Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta had deliberately remained in New Delhi to handle administrative reorganisation, delegating the honour of inaugurating the facilities entirely to Jawaharlal Nehru.

As the open-topped government motor car carrying Nehru rolled up to the platform, the air reverberated with thunderous applause and rhythmic cheers of ”Bharat Mata ki Jai!” and ”Pandit Nehru Zindabad!” Nehru stepped onto the stage, dressed in his immaculate white linen achkan, a red rose pinned carefully to his lapel. Beside him walked the Chief Project Engineer, Dr P. K. Banerjee, and the Chief Soviet Technical Advisor, Engineer-General Nikolai Volkov. Nehru’s face was lit with genuine, radiant enthusiasm. He took his seat for a brief moment as traditional Vedic hymns were chanted, followed by the formal presentation of flowers.

When Nehru stepped up to the podium, the brass microphone array hummed into life, broadcasting his voice across the wide industrial plaza and through loudspeakers set up throughout the plant grounds.

”Brothers and sisters, engineers, technicians, and workers of Babina,” Nehru began, his voice ringing with clear, emotional resonance that captivated the thousands standing before him. He paused, gesturing toward the soaring silver towers and vast brick foundries behind him.

”As I stand here today, looking upon these magnificent structures rising out of the ancient soil of Bundelkhand, my heart is filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and wonder,” Nehru said, his hand sweeping across the horizon. ”In the old days, men built great temples of stone and marble to house their gods. But in this new, free dawn of our Republic, these, these great foundries, these chemical plants, these power stations, these vast irrigation dams, these are the true temples of modern India!”

The crowd erupted into loud cheers, the construction workers wearing hard hats clapping enthusiastically.

”For centuries,” Nehru continued, his tone turning reflective, ”our nation was kept in forced backwardness by an imperial power that viewed India merely as a source of raw materials and a market for foreign manufactured goods. We were told that we did not possess the technical capacity, the scientific sophistication, or the industrial discipline to forge our own heavy machinery, our own chemical propellants, our own defence materials. Today, the completion of this Babina plant, and its sister plant at Bhandara, gives a crushing, definitive answer to those colonial myths!”

Nehru turned slightly toward the front rows of the audience, where hundreds of sun-bronzed construction labourers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with young Indian chemical graduates and Soviet technicians.

”Look around you!” Nehru cried, his eyes gleaming. ”Who built these towering structures? Who laid the heavy concrete foundations deep into the rock? Who welded these high-pressure pipelines? It was the hands of Indian workers! Guided by the brilliant minds of Indian engineers, and assisted by our generous technical friends from the Soviet Union who came across thousands of miles to share their industrial mastery with us!”

Nehru turned directly to Engineer-General Volkov and the row of Soviet specialists sitting on the platform, bowing his head in polite appreciation.

”To our Soviet comrades,” Nehru said in clear English, ”I express the profound gratitude of the Government and the people of India. You came to our land not as conquerors, not as imperial masters seeking to exploit our wealth, but as fellow workers and technicians, sitting side by side with our young apprentices, passing on your knowledge, your technical blueprints, and your industrial discipline. This plant is not merely a triumph of engineering; it is a monument to international cooperation based on mutual respect and peaceful construction.”

Volkov and the Soviet delegation stood up, clapping warmly and bowing back to Nehru, visible pride on their weathered faces.

Nehru turned back to the crowd, his voice dropping into an intimate, inspiring register as he addressed the plant workers who were about to take charge of the heavy machinery.

”To the young men and women who will work in these halls tomorrow, who will monitor the reaction tanks, handle the high-energy compounds, and ensure that a steady, unbroken stream of industrial chemicals flows to our sovereign foundries, I say this: You are the guardians of India’s economic and defence freedom. The steel of our arms, the strength of our infrastructure, and the self-reliance of our nation rest upon your shoulders. Work with discipline, work with safety, work with the knowledge that every ton of material produced here is a brick laid in the foundation of an invincible Republic!”

Nehru stepped down to the bronze ceremonial ribbon stretched across the heavy oak doors of the central control hall. Dr Banerjee handed him a pair of brass scissors. With a swift, decisive cut, Nehru severed the ribbon.

Instantly, a massive brass siren atop the central tower blared across the valley, a long, deep, roaring note that signalled the official commissioning of the plant. High above, the tri-colour sovereign flag was unfurled, snapping proudly in the autumn breeze as hundreds of white doves were released into the clear blue sky.

Inside the master control room, Nehru pressed the heavy green industrial switch. Deep within the earth, massive electric turbines hummed into life, pressure gauges flickered, and the first chemical synthesis lines of Babina began their continuous, perpetual operation, dedicating the fires of industrial power to the service of the nation.
