Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Palam Airfield, Delhi

The roar of four radial engines filled the clear morning sky over New Delhi as a silver Avro York transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force circled above Palam Airfield before touching down smoothly on the tarmac.

A massive security contingent from the Central Reserve Police and Special Branch maintained a wide perimeter around the apron. Standing beside a fleet of sleek black VIP cars were Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta, and a small delegation of senior Cabinet ministers.

The aircraft taxied to a halt, and the mobile staircase was wheeled into position. The heavy cabin door swung open, and a hush fell over the assembled dignitaries and press photographers.

Stepping out onto the upper platform was Mahatma Gandhi. Aged, frail, but possessing an aura of serene, undiminished authority, he leaned lightly on his wooden walking stick, flanked by his close entourage and personal physicians who had accompanied him on his long journey back from Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Nehru moved forward rapidly, his eyes glistening with deep emotion as Gandhi slowly descended the stairs. As Bapu stepped onto the Indian soil, Nehru bowed deeply, touching his feet in traditional reverence.

”Bapu,” Nehru said, his voice trembling slightly. ”Welcome home to a free India.”

Gandhi smiled warmly, resting a hand gently on Nehru’s shoulder, then looked up at Sardar Patel, who stepped forward with a solemn, respectful bow, and Ram Prasad Gupta, who stood tall, calm, and composed.

”Jawahar, Vallabhbhai, Ram Prasad,” Gandhi said, his voice soft yet remarkably clear. ”It has been a long voyage across the Indian Ocean. In Mauritius and Seychelles, I saw our brothers and sisters, descendants of indentured labourers, holding their heads high because they knew the motherland had finally broken her chains.”

Patel smiled grimly, his arm supporting the Mahatma as they began walking toward the waiting car. ”The world is in turmoil, Bapu. The Levant is at war, Europe is divided, and the British are adjusting to their diminished status. But here, the Republic stands firm.”

”I have read the cables while at sea,” Gandhi remarked, looking intently at Ram Prasad Gupta. ”You have built strong walls, Ram Prasad. You have armed the borders and secured the treasury. But remember always: steel and gold are merely the outer shell. The soul of India lies in her righteousness, her truth, and her care for the poorest man sitting in the most remote of villages.”

”We have forgotten neither the soul nor the steel, Mahatma-ji,” Ram replied respectfully, opening the door of the lead automobile for him. ”The steel protects the nation so that its soul may flourish in peace.”

Gandhi chuckled softly, stepping into the vehicle. ”Ah, Ram Prasad, you always have a ledger for every truth. Come, let us go to the capital. There is much work to be done.”

The Red Fort, Old Delhi

15 August 1948

A sea of humanity stretched from the massive red sandstone walls of the Lahori Gate all the way across the maidan toward Chandni Chowk. More than a million people, workers, farmers, soldiers, refugees, women, and children, had gathered under a crisp, brilliant morning sky to celebrate the first anniversary of Indian Independence.

High on the central rampart, flanked by the historic battlements, stood Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta. To his right stood Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr S. Radhakrishnan, and the entire Cabinet. Below the rampart, an elite guard of honour comprising units from the Punjab Regiment, the Maratha Light Infantry, the 1st Patiala Infantry, and the Indian Navy stood at rigid attention, their bayonets gleaming in the sun.

As the clock struck nine, the sovereign tricolour flag was unfurled high above the fort. A twenty-one-gun salute echoed across the Yamuna River, the heavy concussions of the artillery shaking the ancient stone underneath their feet. The crowds roared in unison: ”JAI HIND! JAI HIND!”

Ram stepped up to the array of brass microphones. A profound silence descended upon the vast ocean of people. His posture was monumental, unyielding; his eyes swept across the vast gathering with quiet, cold, and absolute authority.

”Citizens of the Republic of India,” Ram began, his deep, resonant voice amplified by the loudspeakers, carrying across the maidan with unbroken weight.

”One year ago, at the stroke of midnight, our ancient land severed the heavy chains of foreign bondage. We inherited a continent broken by imperial exploitation, threatened by foreign intrigue, and shadowed by the flames of partition. There were those in foreign capitals who prophesied that India would collapse into chaos, that our people would starve, and that our state would fracture into a hundred warring fragments.”

He paused, his voice dropping into a register of cold, steel-like intensity.

”They miscalculated. They did not understand the spirit that resides within the soil of this land.”

The crowd began to murmur in rising agreement.

”In twelve short months, we have consolidated our sovereign borders. We have integrated the princely states into one indivisible union. We have fed our millions through our own agricultural reserves, built our own research institutions, and established our own financial independence. In the high, frozen passes of the Himalayas, our brave soldiers have shown that no foreign invader can violate our territorial integrity with impunity. On the sporting fields of the world, our athletes have raised our national flag to the highest pinnacles of global glory.”

Ram leaned slightly toward the microphones, his eyes burning with an intense, visionary fire.

”Let foreign powers hear this clearly from the ramparts of the Red Fort today: India is no longer a prize to be traded, nor a pawn to be manipulated in the grand games of empires. We extend our hands in friendship, peace, and trade to every nation on earth. But if any power, near or far, dares to test our resolve, they will be met not with hesitation or weakness, but with the unyielding, unbreakable iron of a united Republic!”

The maidan erupted into a thunderous storm of applause and cheers. ”BHARAT MATA KI JAI! BHARAT MATA KI JAI! VANDE MATARAM!” shrieked hundreds of thousands of voices. Nehru smiled with genuine admiration, while Sardar Patel nodded in stern, grim approval. Ram stepped back from the microphones, his face calm, steady, and filled with monumental weight, a leader who had forged a nation’s shield and secured its rightful place among the titans of the earth.

High Command Headquarters & The Northern Front

Inside the strategic war room at South Block, large topographic maps of the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges covered the central planning tables. Red and blue operational markers dragged across the high mountain passes around Skardu, Kargil, and Gilgit.

Sardar Patel, Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta, and General Cariappa stood over the map, listening to the tactical briefing from Major General Thimayya, who had flown in directly from the Srinagar front.

”Prime Minister, Sardar-sahib,” Thimayya began, pointing his wooden swagger stick at the northernmost sector. ”Operation Vijay and Operation Northern Light have achieved total tactical success. The combined offensive of the 1st Patiala Infantry, the 7th Cavalry equipped with Stuart light tanks, and our specialised high-altitude mountain brigades has smashed the enemy’s defensive lines along the Zoji La pass.”

”And Gilgit-Baltistan?” Patel asked sharply, his finger tapping the high northern salient bordering China and the Soviet Union.

”Gilgit is entirely liberated, Sardar-sahib,” Thimayya announced proudly. ”Our mountain columns, supported by continuous air-supply drops from our heavy transport fleet, advanced through the Astor valley and captured Gilgit airfield two days ago. The Pakistani regular units and the remnants of the Gilgit Scouts under Major Brown’s former command were completely outflanked, isolated, and forced into total surrender. Baltistan, including Skardu and the entire line up to the Khunjerab Pass, is now fully under the firm control of the Indian Army.”

Ram leaned over the map, examining the strategic northern tri-junction where India, China, the Soviet Union, and Afghanistan converged.

”Are the northern passes fully secured and fortified, Thimayya?” Ram inquired calmly.

”Absolute ironclad control, Prime Minister,” Thimayya replied confidently. ”We have established permanent garrisons equipped with winterised bunkers, heavy mortars, and all-weather communications at every strategic pass. The entire northern boundary of Jammu and Kashmir, from Gilgit to Leh, is sealed. The enemy has been completely cleared from the northern territories.”

Patel let out a deep, satisfied breath, looking up at Ram. ”The northern gateway to India is locked shut. Neither Pakistan nor any northern power will ever use the roof of the world to threaten the Punjab or Delhi again.”

”Send my personal commendations to the officers and men on the northern front, General Thimayya,” Ram ordered, his voice carrying monumental weight. ”They have secured the crown of Mother India with cold, unyielding steel.”
