Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Willingdon Airfield, Delhi

17 August 1948

The late afternoon sun burned through the humid August haze, washing the tarmac of Willingdon Airfield in a deep, molten gold. Beyond the high perimeter fences, a staggering tide of humanity stretched as far as the eye could see, tens of thousands of citizens who had braved the muggy post-monsoon heat, clogging the roads from Safdarjung to Rajpath.

The air thrummed with a deafening, collective roar. Brass bands played jubilant, energetic renditions of national tunes, while schoolboys perched precariously on the branches of neem trees, waving tiny silk tricolours.

High above the airfield, the silver silhouettes of four IAF Avro York transport aircraft broke through the scattered cloud cover. As their landing gear touched the tarmac in smooth succession, a thunderous cheer erupted from the crowd, shaking the very glass in the airfield’s observation tower.

”BHARAT MATA KI JAI!””INDIAN ATHLETES ZINDABAD!”

Standing at the edge of the red-carpeted receiving platform was Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta, flanked by Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The heavy cabin door of the lead aircraft swung open.

First to step out onto the mobile stairs was Kishan Lal, captain of the gold-medal-winning hockey team, holding the shimmering Olympic trophy high above his head. Right beside him, young Henry Rebello stepped into the harsh sunlight, a gleaming gold medal resting against his blazer, his triple jump victory still sending shockwaves through world athletics. Then came Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, smiling broadly as he patted his bronze medal, closely followed by Sarangapani Raman, Jim Vickers, Eric Prabhakar, and the exhausted yet triumphant contingent of footballers, runners, and wrestlers.

The moment Kishan Lal’s foot touched the tarmac, the barricades nearly buckled under the surge of the ecstatic public; marigold garlands rained down from the crowd, coating the asphalt in brilliant orange and yellow.

Nehru moved forward with open arms, a radiant, emotional smile breaking across his face as he embraced Kishan Lal and Rebello. ”You have brought honour to the motherland,” Nehru said, his voice thick with pride. ”Under the grey skies of London, you made our flag soar highest.”

Sardar Patel stepped forward, his dark, sharp eyes softening into genuine warmth as he shook K.D. Jadhav’s hand and slapped the young wrestler’s shoulder with approving force. ”Well done, my boy. You fought like a lion in Karad, and you fought like a lion in England.”

Henry Rebello turned toward Ram Prasad Gupta, bowing his head slightly as the Prime Minister adjusted a heavy garland of fresh jasmine around the track star’s neck.

”Your jump was heard across five continents, Henry,” Ram said quietly, his deep voice carrying that calm, monumental weight that anchored every room he entered. ”You proved that when this nation is given the right backing, her sons and daughters bow to no one on earth.”

”We carried your words with us to Wembley, Prime Minister,” Rebello replied, his eyes shining as he looked back at the sea of cheering citizens waving banners that read ’Golds of London, Heroes of Bharat!’. ”We knew four hundred million people were breathing with every step we took.”

Sarangapani Raman, still bewildered by the French newspapers that had dubbed him a European target for OGC Nice, laughed as a group of young football fans chanted his name from behind the security line. Beside him, Jim Vickers, who had missed a hurdles medal by hundredths of a second, found himself overwhelmed as citizens reached over the low railing just to pat his back, shouting words of admiration for his fierce, heroic fight.

Ram stepped up to the array of All India Radio microphones set on the edge of the apron. As he raised his hand, the roaring crowd fell into a hushed, expectant silence.

”Citizens of India,” Ram’s voice echoed clear and steady across the airfield, amplified through the loudspeakers. ”One year ago, we proved to the world that we could win our freedom. Today, these young men and women have proven that we possess the strength, the discipline, and the invincible spirit to conquer the world on its own playing fields. They departed as ambassadors of a young Republic; they return as titans of a sovereign nation.”

A mighty roar rose from the crowds, echoing off the fuselages of the silver aircraft and carrying across the grand avenues of New Delhi, a soaring testament to a nation that had well and truly found its stride.

Naval Operations Room & Naval Patrol off the Kathiawar Coast

The heavy grey swell of the Arabian Sea churned against the steel hull of the Indian Navy frigate HMIS Jumna, which was executing a high-speed patrol twenty miles off the coast of Gujarat.

On the open bridge of the frigate, Vice Admiral J.T.S. Hall stood beside the ship’s captain, sweeping his binoculars across the misty horizon. Below deck, inside the radar plot room, the sharp, rhythmic ping of the surface-search radar echoed through the dim, green-lit space.

”Bridge, Plot! We have a fast-moving surface contact bearing 240 degrees, range twelve miles, heading east at eighteen knots! Contact is unflagged and operating without navigation lights in Indian territorial waters!”

Captain Sharma picked up the bridge telephone. ”Action stations! Sound the alarm!”

Across the warship, sirens wailed as sailors scrambled to their battle stations. The twin 4-inch naval guns on the foredeck swung smoothly around, elevating toward the western horizon.

”Target identified through searchlights, Captain!” the lookout shouted from the wing. ”It is a Pakistani armed patrol craft, looks like a modified Fairmile motor launch, heavily armed with 20mm Oerlikon cannons and torpedo tubes!”

”Issue the international signal to halt and prepare for boarding immediately,” Vice Admiral Hall commanded flatly.

On the main deck of the intruder craft, the Pakistani ensign was suddenly hoisted, and without warning, two bright flashes erupted from its deck guns. Tracers zipped across the dark water, splashing a hundred yards harmlessly off HMIS Jumna’s port bow.

”Enemy craft has opened fire on an Indian sovereign warship in Indian territorial waters!” the gunnery officer reported loudly.

Captain Sharma looked at Vice Admiral Hall, who gave a single, cold nod.

”Main battery... illuminate and destroy!” Sharma ordered.

The night sky split open with a blinding flash and a deafening roar as HMIS Jumna’s twin 4-inch guns fired in a disciplined salvo. High-explosive shells streaked across the dark waves, striking the Pakistani patrol craft directly midships.

A catastrophic explosion detonated the intruder’s ammunition magazine, sending a massive fireball surging two hundred feet into the night sky. The blast threw torn metal and burning debris across the water. Within less than two minutes, the burning hulk slipped beneath the waves of the Arabian Sea, leaving behind nothing but a slick of oil and burning foam.

Down in the radio room of HMIS Jumna, a high-priority encrypted flash dispatch was immediately drafted and transmitted to the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi:

South Block, Prime Minister’s StudyNext Morning

Ram Prasad Gupta sat at his mahogany desk, reading the naval dispatch delivered personally by Sardar Patel. Outside, the early winter sun washed the grand sandstone arches of South Block in a bright, golden light.

Patel rested his hands on his walking stick, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips. ”The Navy acted with commendable speed and absolute decisiveness. Karachi will think twice before attempting another covert infiltration along our maritime flanks.”

Ram signed the naval operational log, closing the blue leather ledger on his desk with a quiet, final clap. He stood up slowly, stepping over to the broad window overlooking the wide avenues of New Delhi.

”The mountains are secured in Gilgit,” Ram said, his voice quiet, steady, and laden with the monumental weight of a nation that had successfully passed through its ultimate trial. ”The seas are guarded by iron. Our athletes have proven our strength to the world, our treasury is solvent, and our people stand united. Let the world take note, Sardar: The Republic of India is no longer an experiment. It is an enduring, invincible titan.”
