Xiao Mo truly had not expected this at all.

The daughter of the Yan family he was taking as his wife turned out to be the very same young lady he had encountered several times before but thinking about it carefully, Xiao Mo felt that he should have noticed something the very first time he met her in the palace.

At that time, there had been only Empress Dowager Yan in the inner palace, and any woman who could enter the inner palace would naturally have to be a relative or close friend of the Empress Dowager.

On top of that, it had been only a few days since he and the Yan familyʼs daughter had been betrothed.

So it was perfectly natural for Yan Ruxue to have entered the palace to visit Empress Dowager Yan.

”Indeed, it has been quite a while since I last saw you.” Xiao Mo set down the jade scale and sat down beside Yan Ruxue. ”It seems that you and I truly are bound by fate.”

Yan Ruxue smiled softly. Beneath her long lashes, her beautiful eyes shimmered gently, like butterfly wings slowly fanning open.

”Does Your Majesty not think that my appearance in the imperial palace that day was deliberate? And that the two times we met afterward were because the Empress Dowager had learned of Your Majestyʼs itinerary and intentionally let me know, so that I could arrange a ʼchance encounterʼ with Your Majesty and win your favor?”

”There would have been no need for that.”

Xiao Mo smiled and shook his head as he replied.
”My current situation, even if it cannot be spoken of openly, is something most people understand clearly in their hearts, even the common people of this land know it.”

”Your Yan family already feels that marrying you off to me is something of a slight against you. Moreover, the marriage was arranged by the Empress Dowager, and I had already agreed to it, so it could not be changed regardless. So why would you have needed to deliberately win my favor?”

Listening to Xiao Moʼs words, Yan Ruxue gave a faint nod without saying anything, silently acknowledging his point.

A brief silence fell over the room, and neither of them quite knew how to continue the conversation.

Yan Ruxue raised her head and looked at the wine cups on the table, then slowly said, ”Your Majesty, the hour is getting late. Should we not drink the wedding cup now?”

”Indeed, it is time.”

Xiao Mo stood up and poured two cups of wine.

Yan Ruxue took the cup from Xiao Moʼs hand, and the two linked arms, drinking the crystal-clear wine in their cups down to the last drop.

When they set their cups down, Yan Ruxue lowered her head, a faint blush spreading across her fair cheeks.

No matter how composed and gracious Yan Ruxue appeared in her everyday life, on the most important night of her life she still carried a touch of nervousness and a woman dressed in red on her wedding night, with spring blooming in her heart, was the most captivating sight of all.

Being a normal man, Xiao Mo could not help but feel his heart begin to beat faster as he gazed at Yan Ruxueʼs profile.

Just then, a night breeze drifted through the windowʼs edge and blew out every candle on the table.

The soft glow of the moon filtered in through the window, and its pure, bright light fell upon Yan Ruxueʼs cheeks.

Perhaps the bed curtain had not been properly hooked.

The red gauze slipped free from its hook and slowly descended, veiling the two of them.

Everything from the outside world seemed to be shut away by that sheer curtain, and as the two sat together on the bed, the atmosphere between them gradually grew tender and intimate.

Xiao Mo slowly drew closer. Yan Ruxue blinked, then closed her eyes and gently tilted her chin upward, her lips, touched with rouge, shimmering with the faint glow of candlelight.

When Xiao Moʼs hands came to rest on Yan Ruxueʼs soft, fair shoulders, he could feel her delicate frame shiver ever so slightly.

The two leaned toward each other, and Xiao Mo could already sense the faint warmth of Yan Ruxueʼs breath.

Standing outside the door, Sili felt that something was very wrong.

She felt it was time to act.

If she did not step in now, she feared her master was about to be thoroughly taken advantage of by this mortal woman but just as Sili was about to use her arts to restrain the Yan familyʼs daughter, her cultivatorʼs heart began sending her frantic warnings.

Sili stood rooted to the spot without moving. She could feel an extraordinarily terrifying spiritual pressure bearing down on her.

At the same time, inside the room, just as Xiao Mo was on the verge of touching Yan Ruxueʼs lips,

Xiao Mo felt his consciousness rapidly grow hazy, a feeling much like a sudden rush of alcohol flooding his mind.

In only an instant, Xiao Mo lost consciousness entirely. His head drooped, and he slumped forward, coming to rest against Yan Ruxueʼs soft, gently rising and falling chest.

Yan Ruxue held the man she cherished in her arms, her slender jade fingers lightly stroking his hair.

Her eyelids dropped softly as she gazed down at the man in her embrace with tender eyes, as though she were looking at the most precious thing she owned, afraid he might leave again, afraid he might get hurt again, afraid he might break.

A fragrant wind swept past, and Sili felt herself growing drowsy. If she had not wished to fall asleep, all she needed to do was channel her spiritual energy to resist it but doing so would certainly give her away.

After weighing her options, although Sili was deeply curious about who exactly had come to Ning Xue Palace, she ultimately gave up any resistance and, lulled by that fragrant scent, collapsed at the entrance.

Apart from Sili, the palace maids standing guard outside the door also fell one after another, dropping in all directions, not a single one remaining conscious.

”It is rather ill-timed for you to come visiting my Ning Xue Palace tonight, young lady.”

Yan Ruxue spoke in an unhurried tone, her voice as gentle as it had always been from beginning to end.

Her gaze remained fixed on Xiao Moʼs face without shifting even slightly.

As Yan Ruxueʼs words settled, the roomʼs door opened and Qin Siyao stepped inside. She stood before Yan Ruxue and gave a respectful bow, saying, ”Siyao greets Elder Sister Yan.”

Yan Ruxue gently laid Xiao Mo down on the bed, covered him with the blanket, folded her hands in front of her, and slowly rose to her feet, standing face to face with Qin Siyao.

In the moonlight, with a gentle breeze passing between them, two women dressed in red stood gazing at each other. The hems of their robes swayed softly, and their long hair rested against their slender waists.

The two women stood tall and graceful, like a painting of beauties beneath the moon.

Though neither of them spoke a single word, it was as if a thousand things had been said within that silence.

”Very well. Since Miss Qin has come, please take a seat.”

Yan Ruxue made a welcoming gesture.

”Siyao thanks Elder Sister.”

Qin Siyao did not decline, and sat down in a chair.

Yan Ruxue poured a cup of tea for Qin Siyao and placed it before her.

”In truth, you should not be calling me Elder Sister,” Yan Ruxue said, smiling softly at Qin Siyao. ”In reality, Miss Qin is quite a bit older than I am, is she not?”

When Yan Ruxueʼs words landed, Qin Siyaoʼs eyes flickered with a brief moment of surprise, and then her smile grew even brighter.

”What is Elder Sister Ruxue talking about? From the day Siyao was born to this very day, it has been no more than a short twenty years. How could I possibly be older than Elder Sister? It is only right that Siyao should call you Elder Sister.”

Listening to Qin Siyaoʼs defense, Yan Ruxue did not dwell on the matter further, simply taking a light sip of tea. ”Since Siyao insists, then Ruxue will say no more. We each know the truth in our own hearts, and that is enough.”

”Compared to that...”

Yan Ruxue tucked a strand of hair behind her ear with a graceful sweep of her sleeve and turned her gaze toward the window.

A young woman dressed in white sat on the windowsill, a long sword cradled in her arms.

”Sect Master Jiang, since you are already here, why have you been sitting over there all this time? Will you not come down and join us for a cup of tea?”
