Zhou Kingdomʼs capital.

Early in the morning, as the sky had just begun to brighten, the common people in the capital awoke.

Everyoneʼs faces carried joyful expressions, as if celebrating the Spring Festival.

For no other reason than today was His Majestyʼs wedding ceremony.

Never mind that starting from today, for the next three years, the entire Great Zhou would celebrate together with taxes reduced by half, which was itself a joyful matter.

Just the simple act of joining in the excitement was one of human natureʼs traits.

If they didnʼt watch the royal wedding procession, who knew when the next opportunity would come.

So the common people hurriedly rose early and positioned themselves along both sides of the streets the wedding procession would pass through.

Small vendors also quickly prepared their goods and went out to sell.

At the same time, in a small village on the outskirts of the capital, it seemed even livelier than the Zhou Kingdomʼs capital itself.
Yesterday evening, when the men of this small village had just returned from spring plowing, they saw government soldiers guarding the village entrance.

At first, they thought someone in their village had committed some offense but when they approached, they were each handed two red envelopes.

Only then did they learn that a wealthy familyʼs daughter was getting married but they were even more confused.

Where would such a remote little village get a wealthy familyʼs daughter?

Even if someone from the village had made their fortune, didnʼt they all move to the capital?

Why would anyone return to the village?

The village men were curious, and naturally the village women were even more curious. However, even the most talkative woman who most loved to gossip, after making just a few inquiries, no longer dared to investigate further.

The village chief was even more tight-lipped, only saying ”that person in the village is extraordinarily noble.”

In a dilapidated little courtyard in this village called Lion Bridge Village.

Yan Ruxue had awakened early.

After Xiao Chun attended to her young ladyʼs washing up, palace maids from the imperial palace quickly stepped forward to help Yan Ruxue put on her wedding dress and don her jewelry.

After getting dressed, Yan Ruxue sat before the vanity, and the palace maids picked up rouge and carefully applied it to the future imperial consort.

Madam Yan and maid Xiao Chun watched carefully from the side.

Xiao Chun felt her young lady was truly too beautiful.

Her young lady was already as beautiful as a celestial maiden.

Now, her young lady was even more beautiful than a celestial maiden!

Indeed, ”A womanʼs most beautiful attire is red wedding garments.”

These words were truly not just empty talk.

Xiao Chun just didnʼt understand why the young lady wanted to marry from this village.

Never mind Xiao Chun, even Yan Ruxueʼs mother, Madam Yan, didnʼt understand why her daughter would choose this village.

Madam Yan only knew that she and her daughter would often come to a lakeside outside this village for spring outings.

Because this village was close, and the villageʼs customs were simple and honest, the scenery was indeed quite nice, and they could come here to escape the summer heat.

So Madam Yan simply bought a courtyard in this village.

Which was now this very courtyard.

When buying the courtyard at the time, some interesting things had happened.

Madam Yan still remembered herself and her daughter wandering around this village looking for a suitable place, then being led by her daughter to this uninhabited little courtyard.

This courtyard was located at the edge of the village, right next to a mountain peak called ”Snake Mountain.”

Madam Yan had immediately taken a liking to it and wanted to buy this little courtyard. However, when the Lion Bridge Village chief heard about it, he found it very difficult.

Saying things like ”ancestral precepts state this courtyard cannot be sold” and ”this little courtyard is the foundation of the village.”

By the end, the Lion Bridge Village chief was nearly in tears, saying ”Please do not make things difficult for this old man. Aside from this courtyard, you may build a courtyard anywhere else you wish.”

Madam Yan was not an arrogant and domineering person.

Seeing this elderly man over seventy with tears and snot, she had thought to just forget it but the next day, the Lion Bridge Village chief personally visited the Yan residence in the city, saying that little courtyard could now be sold.

When Madam Yan asked for the reason, the village chief said he had dreamed of his ancestors last night, and they had told him in the dream that this little courtyard could be sold.

Madam Yan didnʼt know if the village chief was deliberately raising the price, but in the end still bought the courtyard.

”Could it be that because Ruxue often came here to escape the heat when she was young, she has considerable attachment to this place, and feels she wonʼt be able to come after entering the palace, so she wants to marry from here to take one last look at her childhood memories?”

Looking at her daughter before the vanity mirror, Madam Yan thought this. However, regarding her daughterʼs proposal, Madam Yan and her husband Yan Zhen naturally had not refused.

After all, in their hearts, having their daughter enter the palace already felt very unfair to her.

How could they refuse if their daughter wanted to marry from here?

So the day before the wedding, she had come with her daughter to this village and decorated this little courtyard.

After the palace maids finished applying Yan Ruxueʼs makeup and adorning her with accessories, Madam Yan stepped forward, took the comb, and brushed it again and again from her daughterʼs roots to the ends.

”First combing to the end, husband and wife until white-haired and old.”

”Second combing to the end, without illness and without worry.”

”Third combing to the tail, many children and long life.”

After Madam Yan finished combing her daughterʼs hair, she gently helped her daughter stand and examined her daughter who was about to marry, tears glistening faintly at the corners of her eyes. ”Beautiful, truly beautiful.”

”Daughter, from now on, you will enter the palace. Once youʼve entered the imperial palace, you must be well-behaved, take good care of yourself, be a good wife and teach children well, and share His Majestyʼs burdens. Do you understand?” Madam Yan earnestly instructed.

”I understand, Mother. Please rest assured, your daughter will definitely take good care of herself and will also take good care of His Majesty.” Yan Ruxue nodded.

”Mm.” Madam Yan looked reluctantly at her daughter. ”Youʼve been obedient and well-behaved since childhood, kind-hearted. In the imperial palace, we donʼt insist on the Empress position. If you canʼt obtain it, so be it. As long as youʼre safe and sound, everything is fine. Be tolerant toward servants as well. Do you hear?”

”I hear you.” Yan Ruxue responded.

”Alright.” Madam Yan wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. ”Mother will go attend to other matters for you first. You sit here for now. When the auspicious hour arrives, weʼll come call you.”

”Yes, Mother.” Yan Ruxue nodded.

Before long, Madam Yan led the palace maids out, leaving only Xiao Chun to attend to Yan Ruxue.

”Young lady, youʼre so beautiful.”

Xiao Chun stepped forward, her eyes sparkling with light.

”Beautiful?” The corners of Yan Ruxueʼs mouth curved slightly with a shallow smile.

Xiao Chun nodded emphatically. ”Beautiful, young lady! Truly too beautiful! Today in red wedding garments, young lady, no woman under heaven can compare to you.”

”Your mouth is still so sweet, you little thing.” Yan Ruxue tapped her brow.

”Thatʼs not true.” Xiao Chun pouted. ”This servant is only speaking the truth.”

As she spoke, the corners of Xiao Chunʼs mouth carried a proud smile.

”Originally His Majesty and young lady already knew each other. He must have a good impression of you, young lady. This time when young lady enters the palace, if His Majesty knows the woman he met before was you, young lady, heʼll definitely be overjoyed. Moreover, young lady, youʼre more beautiful than a celestial maiden today. His Majesty definitely wonʼt want to leave your room tonight.”

”What are you saying, you little thing? Always so improper.” Yan Ruxue pinched Xiao Chunʼs little face.

Previously when Yan Ruxue was learning palace etiquette, those female officials had also taught Yan Ruxue some matters concerning the bedchamber, and Xiao Chun had been listening from the side the whole time.

At the time she had listened with a completely flushed face, but later she had even gone on her own to buy some storybooks and spring palace pictures.

This had left Yan Ruxue quite helpless.

”Hee hee hee...” Hearing the young ladyʼs scolding, Xiao Chun just smiled mischievously.

”Come, go with me to the courtyard for some fresh air.” Yan Ruxue said.

”Yes, young lady. Young lady, please go slowly.” Xiao Chun quickly supported her young lady and walked out of the room into the courtyard.

Sitting on a stone bench in the courtyard, Yan Ruxue looked at the courtyard hung with red lanterns and decorated festively, her eyes emanating a gentle light.

”By the way, young lady, is there something special about this place? Why did young lady want to marry from here?”

In the courtyard, Xiao Chun asked curiously.

”Something special? Nothing particularly special, but there is a story.”

Yan Ruxue sat on the chair with her legs together, her small hands placed on her thighs, looking down at the red wedding garments she wore, the corners of her mouth carrying a gentle smile.

”What story?” Xiao Chun grew even more curious.

”This village, legend has it, tens of thousands of years ago was within the territory of ancient Qin Kingdom, and not far away, our Zhou Kingdomʼs capital was the national capital of ancient Qin Kingdom back then.”

”After that, after ancient Qin Kingdom perished, the years continued to change, as dynasties continuously replaced one another. Ancient Qin Kingdomʼs capital had long since disappeared, and this place became an ordinary location.”

”Later, about ten thousand years ago, several great dynasties appeared again in the Ten Thousand Laws Realm. Qi Kingdom was one of them, and this place belonged to Qi Kingdomʼs territory.”

Yan Ruxue raised her eyes, and a trace of reminiscence flashed through her beautiful peach blossom eyes.

”This village was located in Qi Kingdomʼs Jiangnan Province. Legend has it this village wasnʼt called Lion Bridge Village, but Stone Bridge Village, stone as in the stone character.”

The woman raised her lotus-root arm, her fingers extending from red sleeves, pointing toward a not-too-distant mountain peak. ”That mountain peak wasnʼt called Snake Mountain either, but She Mountain, like the character ʼyuʼ but missing one inch, the ʼsheʼ that sounds the same as snake.”

”In the legend, Stone Bridge Village had a young man. When this young man went up the mountain, he saved a white snake.”

”After healing the white snake, the young man released it back into the mountain forest. The white snake had already developed spiritual intelligence. She worked hard at cultivation and transformed into human form, wanting to repay the young manʼs kindness.”

”That young man, though poor since childhood, studied very diligently, wanting to take the imperial examinations and become a great official.”

Hearing the young lady tell this novel story, Xiao Chun quickly sat beside her young lady and asked curiously, ”Young lady, young lady, what happened next?”

”After that, that little white snakeʼs cultivation talent was indeed passable. She quickly transformed into human form, becoming a little girl. The little girl waited for him on the mountain.”

As she spoke, the corners of Yan Ruxueʼs mouth showed a faint smile.

”At first, the little girl thought her transformation was flawless and he definitely couldnʼt tell. But actually, the little boy had seen through it long ago.”

”But the little boy didnʼt ask, so she didnʼt say.”

”Later, the little girl followed the little boy down the mountain. The two of them depended on each other and grew up together from childhood.”

”The little white snake grew from a girl into a young woman, then from a young woman into a woman.”

”The boy passed the scholar examination, then from scholar passed the provincial examination.”

”The two gradually developed feelings for each other. The man told the woman that when he returned from taking the metropolitan examination in the capital, he would marry her.”

”She said she would wait for him to return, wait for his ten-mile red dowry procession, wait for him in fine clothes on a spirited horse.”

As she reached the end, Yan Ruxueʼs words paused and she said no more, only looking into the distance.

”Young lady, in the end of the story, did this young man and the white snake end up together?” Xiao Chun hadnʼt heard the ending and felt somewhat anxious.

”Guess.” Yan Ruxue smiled gracefully and flicked Xiao Chunʼs forehead with her finger.

”Ah, young lady, how can you do this? No one leaves people hanging like this...” Xiao Chun pouted.

”Alright, alright. Iʼll tell you later. It wonʼt be long until the auspicious hour. You go wait at the village entrance first. I want to be alone for a while.” Yan Ruxue smiled.

”Alright, then this servant will go to the village entrance to wait for the palace procession. But young lady, you must finish telling me later, okay?” Xiao Chun said coquettishly.

”Mm.” Yan Ruxue nodded.

After receiving the young ladyʼs agreement, only then did Xiao Chun leave the courtyard.

In the courtyard, only Yan Ruxue remained alone.

She stood up, stroking the courtyardʼs ancient walls, looking at the newly hung red lanterns.

This little courtyard, repaired countless times, rebuilt countless times but the courtyardʼs appearance, even after experiencing approximately ten thousand years, had never changed.

Before the woman, it was as if she could see a man reading books in the courtyard, while a woman rolled up her sleeves, wrung out the washed clothes, gently shook them, and hung them on a bamboo pole.

Just as the woman was recalling the cherished scenes from the depths of her memory, some commotion came from outside the courtyard.

The woman withdrew her thoughts and looked toward the outside of the courtyard.

Under a tree, three little boys and two little girls were hiding behind the tree, curiously looking toward Yan Ruxue.

When the five children discovered this beautiful elder sister had spotted them, they panicked for a moment and wanted to run away.

”Would you like some candy?”

Yan Ruxue smiled gently at the children.

The children looked at each other, then pushed and shoved each other as they emerged from the bushes and walked into the courtyard.

”Want some...” The five children stood in a row, the oldest no more than six years old.

”Wait a moment.”

Yan Ruxue walked into the house and soon came out carrying a porcelain plate.

She gently brushed her skirt hem, crouched down, and personally stuffed their pockets full of wedding candy.

Seeing the elder sisterʼs gentle manner, the little girl named Huang Ju said with bright eyes, ”Elder sister, youʼre so pretty.”

”Yes, elder sister.” The little boy named Liu Nian sniffled. ”Sister, youʼre even prettier than my mother.”

”Thank you.” Yan Ruxue rubbed their little heads.

”Why is elder sister here all alone?” Five-year-old Qian Qianqian asked curiously.

”Because elder sister is waiting for someone.” Yan Ruxueʼs eyes curved with her smile.

”Waiting for someone?” Another five-year-old boy asked, puzzled.

”Yes.” Yan Ruxue nodded. ”Elder sister is waiting for someone to come marry me.”

”Has elder sister waited for him?” A little girl asked.

”I have...”

Yan Ruxue gently stroked the girlʼs hair, her mind conjuring his image in blue robes, and said to her slowly.

”Elder sister (Ruxue)”

”Is getting married (wait for me to return)”
