Urban Seduction: Housewives Club

Chapter 1480: Chapter 1480: The Crisis Descends

With Ming Yue Xin’s cold laugh, the people in the room finally showed their emotions.

The Ming family had few successful members, and those who were successful were mostly out of reach.

Only Professor Ming and Ming Yue Xin had truly made it, and they were now doing very well.

As a result, everyone was trying to ingratiate themselves with Ming Yue Xin, and their families had seen some improvement, though it was only a modest level of prosperity.

Life had become better than before, but three million was still an unimaginable sum for them.

Upon hearing that Liu Ming had embezzled over three million, the relatives in the room had varied expressions. Liu Ming’s parents were full of disbelief.

His father quickly said, ”How could that be possible? You know Liu Ming; he wouldn’t have the guts to do something like that...”

What had he been thinking all this time he had been sitting there?

Ye Fei wasn’t thinking about anything. He was just observing the world around him, watching every person or vehicle that passed by, and sometimes he would even look down at the ants crawling beneath his feet.

Each of them was so busy—either carrying food they had found or on their way to find more.

They never stopped, except for the occasional one that would cautiously climb up Ye Fei’s shoes or pants, seemingly curious about what this strange object was.

Could it be eaten? If not, they would simply turn around and leave.

Occasionally, a butterfly would flutter by and then fly away. By the afternoon, the sky was filled with dragonflies. It was quite rare to see so many dragonflies in the city, especially in spring, and they were not just one species.

Ye Fei squinted his eyes and looked up at the dancing dragonflies, feeling that they were free but had such short lives.

Suddenly, one of the dragonflies was hit and stunned by a passing vehicle, flying out of control and landing on the side of the road. It struggled on the ground for a few moments, seemingly dazed from the impact.

Ye Fei stood up, walked over, and picked up the dragonfly. After examining it, he found that its body was not injured. Perhaps it had just been knocked unconscious.

So, he brought the dragonfly back to where he was sitting and placed it in the palm of his hand. Ye Fei continued to watch it closely.

A few minutes later, the dragonfly regained consciousness. It fluttered its wings, climbed out of Ye Fei’s palm, rested for a while, and then prepared to take off.

With only a few days to live, if it didn’t take this opportunity to eat more or mate more to continue its lineage, it would miss its chance in life.

So, despite being hit by the car, the dragonfly quickly tried to fly away after waking up. However, it might have been severely injured, because the dragonfly flew unsteadily and was blown off course by the draft from a passing sedan. It fell to the ground again.

This time, before Ye Fei could pick it up, it was crushed by the wheel of a bicycle.

The dragonfly died instantly. Its body, split in two, was still twitching.

Ye Fei’s fingers twitched, and a look of compassion appeared on his face. If Ye Fei had just taken action earlier and restrained the dragonfly, perhaps it wouldn’t have been hit by the car and then crushed by the bicycle.

But was it too late to regret now?

Perhaps this was the fate of the dragonfly.

Even if Ye Fei had restrained it and it had temporarily survived, its lifespan was only a few days. It would have died eventually, or maybe it would have died in Ye Fei’s hands because it was already doomed after the first impact.

Lost in thought, Ye Fei noticed a large ant running up to the dragonfly’s carcass, as if it had discovered a new world.

Ye Fei could almost hear the ant’s antennae rubbing together, making a clicking sound, as if it were sending signals to its companions: A huge piece of meat had fallen from the sky here. Everyone should come quickly and share in the feast. They needed to carry the food home, where many baby ants were still hungry and waiting to be fed.

Soon, the dragonfly’s carcass was surrounded by ants.

With their strong jaws, they tore at the dragonfly’s body, ripping it into pieces and then carrying the fragments back to their nest.

Ye Fei kept watching this scene. He didn’t know what he felt inside, but his face was expressionless, as if it had turned to stone.

When only a small part of the dragonfly’s carcass remained, a car sped by, its window rolled down. An empty beverage bottle flew out, arcing through the air and landing on the dragonfly’s remains.

Everything was so coincidental. The ants feasting on the dragonfly’s carcass had no idea that such a disaster would come from above.

Even if they had seen the bottle flying toward them, they wouldn’t have had time to escape.

The incoming bottle was like a massive meteorite, crushing a bunch of ants instantly. It bounced a few times on the ground before finally landing by the roadside.

Finally, an expression returned to Ye Fei’s face. His eyes twitched a few times, and a look of anger appeared. He looked up to see where the bottle had come from.

The car that had thrown the bottle was already dozens of meters away, and in a few more seconds, it disappeared around the corner.

Ye Fei started to move, but then stopped. After all, he couldn’t go and kill the person who threw the bottle just for the sake of a few ants, could he?

In just a moment, dozens of lives had vanished before Ye Fei’s eyes. Although it was just a dragonfly and a few dozen ants, they were still alive, weren’t they?

How innocent they were, struck down by a sudden disaster. Ye Fei couldn’t feel the sudden disappearance of those lives, but he suddenly felt very melancholic.

He had many strange emotions today, and witnessing these deaths made him feel even worse. Ye Fei looked down at the still-busy ants by his feet and murmured, ”What is the meaning of your existence? You can die at any moment. Passing vehicles can crush you, human feet can step on you, a gust of wind can blow you away, a puddle of water can drown a bunch of you, and other insects can eat you. Yet, you keep busy, searching for food, raising offspring, and serving the queen ant...”

”What about you? Fluttering about so busily, only to disappear forever afterward,” Ye Fei looked up at the dragonflies again.

”And what about me? Perhaps I am the most powerful in this world, but in the eyes of even higher beings, am I not like these ants? Then what is the purpose of our constant toil...?”

At this moment, his emotions were very off.

As he kept witnessing death, Ye Fei’s mind began to become chaotic, and his thoughts became entangled. He muttered to himself, asking and answering questions repeatedly.

This cycle continued, and Ye Fei couldn’t describe how he felt. Perhaps he didn’t realize how chaotic his inner self had become.

Before long, he felt a burning sensation in his heart, with various emotions mixing, as if they were about to consume him entirely.

Unfortunately, Ye Fei had no way to call for help. He was on a busy street, and even if he suddenly fainted, it was doubtful that anyone would dare come over to help him or take him to the hospital.

He had already realized that something was wrong, but it was too late.
