Chapter 317: At This Moment, the Mangekyo Is No Longer a Mystery

Whether it was Itachi, Shisui, Sasuke, or the Uchiha of the past, they usually awakened their Sharingan while fully conscious. Even if they collapsed afterward, it was only after the Mangekyo had already awakened.

”When humans are asleep, they don’t have much subjective awareness. That means they lack a clear enough sense of self and a strong enough will. That might be why they can’t awaken the Mangekyo,” Amamiya Kenichi said as he looked at Yasuo Yayoi, feeling that this possibility was highly likely.

Even for ninja in the Ninja World, maintaining conscious awareness while asleep was extremely difficult, and almost no one would even attempt it.

After all, sleep existed to let the brain relax. While humans sleep, the brain secretes fluid to wash the cerebral cortex and remove metabolic waste, ensuring normal brain function. That fluid is not secreted while awake.

Even the heart slows down during sleep, allowing it to rest. That was why staying up too late could cause sudden death. The brain and heart simply did not get enough recovery time, and once the burden accumulated to a certain point, something would go wrong.

”If that’s the case, then Yayoi’s experiment was performed under anesthesia. In other words, even if the emotional stimulus was strong enough, because he lacked subjective consciousness and a powerful enough will...”

Kenichi paused for a moment, then continued.

”...he still couldn’t awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. After all, awakening it requires an extremely clear intent.”

The more he thought about it, the more reasonable it seemed. After all, when someone was asleep, who knew what they were actually thinking?

Without a clear enough sense of self, there naturally would not be a sufficiently intense desire. And without that, awakening the Mangekyo Sharingan would remain impossible.

”So he has to stay conscious? But if that’s the case, will he awaken some bizarre Mangekyo ability?” Kenichi scratched his head.

The abilities awakened by the Mangekyo Sharingan were truly too mysterious.

Izanagi was an excellent example. As for special abilities, there were even stranger cases, such as Uchiha Hikari. Even though she had been just an ordinary child, she had awakened a heaven defying power like Eight Thousand Spears.

So sometimes, it really was hard to say what kind of ability the Sharingan would awaken.

”How do you feel now?” Kenichi asked Yasuo. He wanted to know what Yasuo was thinking right now so he could infer what sort of ability he might awaken.

But then another thought struck him.

The parasites could control others and even influence Yasuo’s thoughts and judgment. If that was the case, could he directly use the parasites to control Yasuo’s thoughts and guide the Mangekyo that awakened?

”I... I really want to die.” Yasuo looked at Kenichi with hatred, but that hateful expression quickly twisted into unwilling admiration. The parasites were clearly influencing him once again.

Kenichi didn’t waste time on more pleasantries. He already had a hypothesis in mind. In that case, he would use the parasites to influence Yasuo’s thoughts while conducting the experiment himself.

Even if the Mangekyo awakened, the risk should remain manageable.

”Make him feel a desire to destroy everything,” Kenichi said, issuing the command.

As the order took effect, Yasuo’s expression turned painful, but his body remained motionless.

Kenichi smiled in satisfaction and resumed the emotional stimulation experiment.

Just as before, he began with standard emotional stimulation as a warm up, then gradually increased the intensity. This time, he followed the same process as before to avoid introducing any unnecessary variables.

”Ugh...” With full consciousness intact, Yasuo’s reaction became far more violent. He even lost control of his bladder, making Kenichi frown slightly.

That was precisely why he preferred performing experiments under full anesthesia. Otherwise, the laboratory would need to be cleaned after every single session.

[After the experiment began, the subject displayed intense discomfort, and the tachycardia became increasingly obvious, even surpassing previous records.]

Kenichi fixed his gaze on Yasuo’s eyes.

The three tomoe were spinning faster and faster. At that moment, the detector Kenichi had placed near the amygdala picked up new activity.

That strange fluid emerged once more from the Sharingan particles within the amygdala, then flowed along the cerebral cortex and into Yasuo’s eyes.

The next moment, the three tomoe in Yasuo’s eyes transformed into a strange new pattern.

Mangekyo Sharingan.

Kenichi immediately stopped the stimulation, staring at Yasuo with excitement.

He had actually awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan.

This was an enormous breakthrough in his Sharingan research.

[The experiment has succeeded. After the Sharingan particles in the amygdala secreted a strange fluid, the target successfully awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan. But what exactly is this fluid?]

[I once considered extracting a portion of the fluid for research, but because doing so might interfere with the awakening process and cause the experiment to fail, I gave up on that idea.]

[Mangekyo Sharingan stimulation method, based on current findings, requires the following conditions:]

[Genes capable of supporting Mangekyo awakening]

[Emotional stimulation while conscious, and the stimulation must be intense enough]

[Assistance from parasites? This point remains questionable.]

[But regardless, the Sharingan experiment has now reached a successful stage. The Mangekyo Sharingan experiment has succeeded. What remains is to conduct supplementary experiments to gather enough data for a valid conclusion.]

”The experiment is basically a success now, but I still need more data,” Kenichi said as he scratched his head and looked at the unconscious Yasuo before closing up his skull.

Originally, Kenichi had intended to leave right away and deal with his other matters, but since Yasuo had awakened the Mangekyo, that would have been troublesome if he had gained some especially dangerous ability.

So after thinking for a moment, Kenichi called Uchiha Shiori over while he sat elsewhere and observed.

He needed to stay cautious around Yasuo. If Yasuo had awakened something like Kotoamatsukami, then using Shiori as the intermediary would reduce the risk and also allow Kenichi to observe the nature of the awakened power.

”Amamiya sama.” Uchiha Shiori arrived quickly. As soon as she stepped inside, she paused at the strange smell in the room, but then she instinctively began cleaning.

”Just sit here and watch him. When he wakes up, question him according to my instructions,” Kenichi said after she finished.

”Yes, Amamiya sama.” Uchiha Shiori asked no questions. She simply sat down quietly and waited for Yasuo to awaken.

”What ability did you awaken, Yasuo Yayoi?” Uchiha Shiori asked once he opened his eyes and sat there blankly.

Kenichi frowned slightly.

The Mangekyo Sharingan was the most variable of all ocular powers, and that was precisely what made it such a headache. The abilities it awakened were often bizarre and impossible to predict.

Still, the parasite’s connection remained stable, and Kenichi could still control it normally. At the very least, that meant there should not be any immediate problem.

”Make him use the ocular powers of both eyes,” Kenichi instructed.

Uchiha Shiori immediately relayed the order. After a brief struggle, Yasuo obediently activated his eye techniques.

Kenichi finally saw what abilities he had awakened.

Amaterasu, the black flames that burn everything.

And another ability that resembled telekinesis. Yasuo used it to lift a surgical knife from a distance with astonishing speed.

”The first ability is understandable. It was probably influenced by the parasite. But what is the second one?” Kenichi found himself genuinely curious.

The Mangekyo was supposed to awaken abilities according to the strongest desire in the user’s heart at the time of awakening. Yet Yasuo had awakened something like this, which really was difficult to explain.

Then Kenichi thought of another possibility.

”Could it be that because he was bound down and unable to move, what he wanted most was to attack me from a distance, so he awakened an ability like this?”

At that moment, Kenichi also noticed blood flowing from Yasuo’s eyes. He looked to be in considerable pain, and his aura had become significantly weaker.

”So his body can’t handle the burden of the Mangekyo Sharingan yet. That’s normal.” Kenichi nodded to himself.

The Sharingan was powerful, but it also placed a burden on the body. Even members of the Uchiha clan, who could activate and deactivate it freely, didn’t keep their Sharingan active all day. They often deactivated it to reduce the strain.

And Yasuo was only a Genin. Even though he had rested for a while after awakening the Sharingan, forcibly using the Mangekyo was still too much for him.

After that, Kenichi ran a few more tests. Once he confirmed there were no immediate issues, he had Uchiha Shiori take Yasuo back.

”The experiment is finished, and it seems basically successful. But whether it can truly be called a complete success still depends on gathering more experimental data.” Kenichi pinched his brow.

”So the next step is to conduct larger scale experiments in the Land of Snow to gather enough data and confirm whether this Mangekyo awakening method is truly correct.”

He looked down at the experimental log in his hands.

There was no doubt about it. This was a discovery capable of destroying a nation.

Kenichi had no doubt what would happen if this research were exposed.

The Akatsuki Organization would immediately become the common enemy of every ninja village. His head would receive the highest bounty in the world, and countless people would come hunting for him.

At that point, Kakuzu probably wouldn’t even be able to resist taking a shot at him for the reward.

After all, the history of the Ninja World wasn’t all that long. The age of the villages had only lasted for a certain period. Onoki had personally witnessed the era of Uchiha Madara and knew exactly how terrifying the power of the Mangekyo Sharingan was.

And Kenichi’s research could make even a Genin awaken the Mangekyo.

That was an absurd enhancement of a ninja’s strength.

A charging force made up entirely of Mangekyo Sharingan users would be absolutely horrifying.

So what would the ninja villages do?

Either seize the technology, or destroy it.

If they couldn’t possess it, they would wipe it out. That was the realistic outcome.

”That’s why I chose the Land of Snow.” A faint, almost crazed smile appeared on Kenichi’s lips.

The Land of Snow was simply too suitable.

Its distance, its terrible climate, and its isolated geography placed it far away from the rest of the Ninja World, far away from the core of every conflict. It was practically a place content to remain outside everything.

And while airships now existed in the Ninja World, there was truly nothing in the Land of Snow that interested anyone. Hardly anyone would come here.

That meant Kenichi would have enough time to assemble his ninja army.

”Koyuki, how many parasite eggs do you have now?” Kenichi asked as he found Koyuki, who was in the middle of eating.

”Master, the parasite eggs I currently have are enough to make half the capital’s population into hosts~” Fuuka Koyuki smiled happily, lightly biting her lower lip as her eyes shimmered.

”Can all those parasitized people become ninja?” Kenichi asked.

He knew exactly what Koyuki’s expression meant, but he couldn’t bring himself to respond to it, so he simply pretended not to notice.

Koyuki shot him a resentful look, but she still answered honestly. The hierarchy of the insect race was extremely strict.

”Not necessarily. Even if they can sense and refine chakra, some people simply have poor talent. No matter what you do, they can never become ninja,” Koyuki said, shaking her head. Human aptitude varied too much. Some people truly were unsuited to becoming ninja.

”That’s enough.” Kenichi was not greedy.

Still, he knew the real reason those people couldn’t become ninja was probably genetic.

So in theory, if he transplanted Uchiha clan genes into them, they should also be able to become ninja. And if that happened, the result would be a terrifying ninja army.

”How is the food supply?” Kenichi asked next.

That was the crucial question.

If that issue couldn’t be solved, then everything else would be nothing more than a fantasy.
