Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Collateral Damage

The attack did not hit Haruki first. It hit Mizuno. That was how the industry worked — creators believed they stood at the center of every conflict, and reality usually disagreed. Editors absorbed the first impact more often than not, and Haruki learned that particular lesson three days later, the hard way, the way most of these lessons seemed to arrive lately.

The article kept spreading. Not explosively, steadily, like a crack moving through glass one inch at a time. Every day brought new discussions, new debates, new doubts stacking quietly on top of each other. The story itself still performed well — Chapter Ten remained one of the strongest Chapters in the series, readers stayed, engagement held healthy. The damage wasn’t visible in rankings at all.

It appeared somewhere else entirely.

At eleven in the morning, Mizuno called. Immediately, Haruki knew something was wrong — she sounded tired in a way that wasn’t ordinary-editor tired, but a deeper version of it, the kind produced by meetings rather than deadlines. The dangerous kind.

”Are you busy?” The question felt unusual coming from her.

”Not right now.”

”Good.” A pause. ”We need to talk.”

His stomach tightened, again — lately that seemed to happen more often than not whenever his phone rang. The conversation started normally enough: performance, reader retention, upcoming Chapters. Then she reached the actual reason for the call.

”The article reached management.”

He sat straighter, and the room suddenly felt smaller than it had a minute ago. ”What happened?”

Another pause, long enough to become concerning on its own. ”They asked questions.”

The answer sounded simple. It wasn’t — industry people asking questions rarely stayed simple once you looked closer at what the questions actually were. Mizuno opened a document, and several charts appeared: growth curves, forum activity, controversy engagement, reader acquisition. The same data he’d already seen from his own dashboard a dozen times over the last week. But management apparently read numbers differently than he did. They didn’t ask whether the story was good. They asked whether the growth was sustainable, which was a completely different question wearing the same clothes as the first one.

”You’re not in trouble.” Relief arrived, briefly, before she continued. ”But extra scrutiny exists now.” The relief left just as fast as it had shown up. Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

He listened quietly, for once actually quietly, while the hidden quest sat in the back of his mind the whole time. Hostile industry actor. Ten Chapters. Maintain credibility. The wording suddenly felt a great deal more serious than it had when he’d first read it.

The call ran nearly forty minutes. When it ended, Haruki sat staring at the dark monitor for a while. The article had accomplished something real — not enough to hurt readers, not enough to hurt the rankings directly, but enough to plant doubt among the people who actually decided what opportunities showed up next. The realization bothered him a lot, mostly because it had worked exactly as designed, precisely enough to matter without ever crossing a line anyone could point to and call unfair.

At two, another message arrived. Kuroda, short as always.

Now you’re seeing the real industry. Readers are only one battlefield.

He reread the line, then looked at the nomination rejection email still sitting in his inbox, then the article, then the management concerns Mizuno had just walked him through. A pattern was starting to emerge whether he wanted to see it or not — success required more than readers liking the work. The realization was unpleasant, and increasingly difficult to argue against.

The next problem arrived at four. His bank account, again, the timing feeling almost personal at this point. His laptop showed the latest expense summary — software subscriptions, equipment maintenance, rent approaching, food, utilities. The numbers looked worse than last month. Not disastrous. Worse, which was somehow a more dangerous distance from disaster than actual disaster would have been, because it meant nothing forced his hand yet.

The spreadsheet projected three more months before genuine pressure arrived. Three. Not seven, not six. Three, sitting quietly on the screen and refusing to improve no matter how long he stared at it.

He leaned back. The hidden quest. The article. Management attention. Money. Deadlines. The future suddenly felt heavier — not dramatic, persistent, like carrying a backpack that quietly gained weight every single week without him ever setting anything down first.

For the first time, a thought surfaced. A dangerous one. Maybe he should find part-time work. The idea felt reasonable, responsible, adult. It also felt like surrender, and the contradiction between those two readings of the exact same idea irritated him immediately.

His phone rang. Yui.

”How bad?”

He laughed, not because anything was funny, but because she somehow always started at exactly the right point without him having to explain anything first. ”The money.”

A pause. ”That bad?”

”Maybe.” The honesty surprised even him as it came out.

She stayed quiet for several moments, thinking, and then: ”Want to hear something selfish?”

He frowned. ”Sure.”

Another pause. ”I don’t want you getting another job.”

The statement caught him completely off guard. For several seconds he genuinely had no response ready. She kept going before he could find one. ”I know that sounds terrible.”

”It does.”

”Thank you.” The reply came back automatic, familiar, and for the first time all day he actually smiled, a real one. Then she turned serious again. ”Not because I want things easy for you.” A pause. ”Because every time you split your attention, you start breaking yourself.”

The words landed quietly, without force, without any of the drama the moment could have carried. Somehow that made them land harder than if she’d said it louder. The conversation ended shortly after, no solution emerging out of it, no plan taking shape — just one more problem waiting for an answer he didn’t have yet.

That night, Chapter Eleven finally reached completion. Ren, Miyu, and Shiori escaped the facility, barely, and the Bureau suffered its first visible defeat since the reveal. Readers would probably love it. He should have felt proud sitting there with the finished pages in front of him.

Instead, exhaustion lingered — not physical exhaustion this time, strategic exhaustion, the specific kind produced by constantly calculating three moves ahead in a game where he couldn’t fully see the board.

A system window appeared before midnight. Black-edged, different, again.

The screen vanished. Haruki stared at the empty monitor, then slowly looked toward the bank spreadsheet still open behind it. The article. The rejection. The management scrutiny. The future, sitting there heavier than it had that morning.

A cold feeling settled somewhere deep inside him, because for the first time he realized the enemy might not actually be trying to destroy his story at all. They might just be trying to slow him down — quietly, deniably, one delayed opportunity and one skeptical meeting at a time.

And in a competitive industry, sometimes that alone was enough to do the job.
