Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Price of Being Right

Chapter Fifteen became the highest-rated Chapter in the series. That should have been good news. Instead, it terrified Haruki.

The Chapter went live at noon. Reader reactions exploded almost immediately. The archive reveal worked. The emotional confrontation worked. The Ren-Miyu scenes worked. Even the pacing worked, every beat landing exactly where he’d hoped it would when he first outlined the sequence weeks earlier. Analytics climbed, comments multiplied, recommendations increased. The Chapter outperformed Chapter Ten, then outperformed Chapter Eight, then kept climbing past both.

Objectively speaking, it was a success. A huge one. Which made the problem obvious the moment he actually let himself think about it: the schedule decision had failed. The Chapter had succeeded. His brain immediately started trying to connect those two facts into something causal. Dangerous. Very dangerous, and he could feel it happening in real time.

At three, the temptation appeared, quiet and reasonable-sounding. Maybe the pressure helped. He hated the thought immediately, because it sounded convincing even to him. The missed deadline created urgency. The urgency created focus. The focus created quality. The logic seemed reasonable laid out that way. The logic was also wrong, and the problem was that the results appeared to support it anyway. Success often made bad decisions harder to identify — a far more dangerous trap than an obvious failure would have been.

A message arrived from Mizuno. Call. Only one word, and that alone felt threatening given everything else that had happened this week.

She answered immediately. ”Congratulations.”

He frowned. The tone sounded suspicious under the word. ”Thanks.”

She opened a report — he could hear pages moving, keyboard clicks, office noise humming in the background. Then: ”Tell me what lesson you learned.”

The question arrived without warning. He hesitated, aware the answer mattered before he’d even chosen one. ”The Chapter worked.”

”That’s not a lesson.” The reply came instantly. Another pause, and the silence stretched, not awkward, expectant, waiting for him to actually try again.

”I pushed too hard,” he offered eventually.

”Closer.” She sounded unimpressed. Then she delivered a sentence he suspected he’d remember for years. ”You’re judging a process using an outcome.”

The room felt smaller after that. ”If someone drives drunk and arrives safely, was it a good decision?”

”No.”

”If someone invests everything on a gamble and wins, was it a good decision?”

”No.”

A chair shifted somewhere in her office. ”Then stop evaluating decisions backward.”

The sentence lodged itself deep, because it attacked exactly the thing he’d been doing all afternoon without quite naming it to himself. The Chapter succeeded. The process failed. Both facts could exist at the same time, refusing to cancel each other out no matter how much he wanted the good outcome to retroactively justify the bad decision behind it. The realization felt uncomfortable and necessary in equal measure.

The call ended — no praise, no reward, no celebration attached to it. Only a warning, delivered plainly and left to sit there.

That evening, Haruki opened his production tracker. For the first time since announcing the five-day schedule, he examined it honestly — not emotionally, not defensively. Honestly, the way Mizuno seemed to manage every difficult conversation she’d ever had with him. The numbers looked terrible once he actually looked. No Chapter buffer. No emergency margin. No recovery days built in anywhere. No flexibility at all if anything went even slightly wrong. The schedule wasn’t ambitious. It was reckless, and he’d been calling it discipline for four straight days.

For several minutes he stared at it, then opened the public announcement page. The cursor blinked, waiting. He wanted to change the schedule immediately, right then, before he lost his nerve.

A second temptation appeared. Don’t. The thought arrived quietly. You’ve already embarrassed yourself once. Changing schedules again looks weak. He hated that thought too, because it also sounded convincing, fear wearing professionalism as a disguise the same way the original schedule change had worn discipline as one.

His phone buzzed. Yui.

He answered. ”How famous are you now?”

He blinked. ”What?”

”I saw the Chapter reactions.” A pause. ”People seem excited.” The comment sounded casual, then she added, ”Which is unfortunate.”

He frowned. ”What does that mean?”

She laughed. ”Because now your stupid decision has positive reinforcement.”

The statement hit immediately. He looked at the analytics, then the schedule page, then the unfinished announcement draft still sitting open behind everything else. ”Good outcomes make bad habits stronger,” she continued, and the words echoed Mizuno’s almost exactly — different phrasing, same conclusion, arrived at independently by two people who barely knew each other. Annoyingly consistent, in a way that made it harder to dismiss as one editor’s particular hang-up.

After the call ended, he stayed at the desk. Outside, the city glowed beneath a clear evening sky. Inside, comments kept celebrating his best Chapter yet, the praise feeling good, too good, and that was exactly the danger sitting underneath all of it.

The system appeared. Not yellow, not blue. White, a color he’d never seen it use before.

[Decision Analysis]

Chapter Fifteen Quality: Excellent Schedule Decision: Poor Relationship Between Variables: Weak Warning: Do not confuse correlation with causation.

He stared at it, then laughed despite himself. The system had somehow learned statistics along the way. Wonderful.

For the next hour, he worked on something considerably less exciting than manga, less exciting than mysteries, less exciting than success. A production pipeline. File backups. Folder structures. Upload checklists. Deadline checkpoints. Boring things, professional things, exactly the kind of infrastructure nobody ever praised a creator for building quietly in the background — the things he should have set up weeks earlier, before any of this had become necessary the hard way.

Near midnight, he finally closed the dashboard. The schedule announcement remained unfinished, still sitting in draft. The decision remained unresolved. The consequences remained active, ticking along in the background regardless of how good Chapter Fifteen’s numbers looked. Nothing had actually been fixed yet.

For the first time, though, Haruki understood the actual battle clearly. It wasn’t against Kanzaki Holdings, patient and invisible somewhere out there. It wasn’t against hidden enemies, or even against missed deadlines specifically.

It was against the part of himself that kept trying to solve problems emotionally instead of honestly — the same part that had bought the Advanced Narrative Evaluation with nearly every point he had, the same part that had spent five straight hours arguing with Tanaka and Hayato instead of drawing, the same part that had built an unsustainable schedule out of pure embarrassment and called it discipline.

Unfortunately, that particular opponent had been with him since Chapter One, wearing a different mask every time it showed up. And unlike every other enemy he’d faced in the last two months, it knew exactly how he thought, exactly which arguments would sound convincing to him, and exactly when to whisper them.
