Chapter 57: Chapter 57: The Schedule Collapse

Haruki changed the schedule. Then immediately regretted how long it took to actually do it. The announcement sat open for nearly three hours. Three hours, to write four sentences.

Every version sounded wrong. Returning to a seven-day schedule — weak. Adjusting production expectations — cowardly. Improving workflow efficiency — corporate, hiding behind language instead of saying anything. Nothing felt honest, because honesty required admitting something simple that he’d been circling around for four straight hours. He failed. Not catastrophically, not permanently. Still, he failed, and no amount of careful wording was going to make that feel better to type out.

At 4:12, he finally posted it.

After reviewing my production process, future updates will return to a seven-day schedule. The previous change was a mistake. Thank you for your patience.

That was all. No explanation, no excuses, no story built around it. The comments arrived quickly.

Good decision.

Honestly expected this.

Better than missing updates.

Take care of yourself.

A few were negative. Most weren’t, and the reaction surprised him, because he’d spent days imagining disaster and reality proved considerably smaller than the version in his head. The embarrassment remained, sitting there quietly. The catastrophe never arrived. A useful lesson, one he probably wouldn’t fully remember the next time fear started dressing itself up as urgency again.

The bigger conversation came later. Mizuno called around six, sounding less annoyed than usual — a worrying sign on its own. When Mizuno stopped sounding annoyed, she usually started sounding concerned instead, and concern tended to be worse.

”I saw the announcement.”

He waited. Then: ”Good.”

The word felt suspicious. ”That’s it?”

”That’s it.”

He frowned. ”No criticism?”

She actually laughed — a rare event. ”You already paid for the mistake.”

The answer landed differently than he expected, because she wasn’t talking about the comments, or the embarrassment. She meant something else — the missed update, the damaged trust, the stress, the wasted energy, the public discussion still lingering in the background of everything he did now. The bill had already arrived and been paid in full. No lecture required on top of it.

The conversation shifted after that. For the first time in weeks, they talked about the manga itself — not industry politics, not sabotage, not deadlines. The manga. Miyu, Ren, Shiori, the archive arc, the Bureau’s aftermath still rippling through the story. He felt lighter almost immediately, the difference surprising him with how sharp it was. Somewhere along the way, the industry story had quietly started consuming everything else, and this — actual story talk — felt better by comparison. Creating always felt better, when he let himself remember that instead of treating it like just one more front in a larger war.

Before ending the call, Mizuno mentioned something unexpected. ”The reader survey arrived.”

He sat up straighter. ”What survey?”

”The monthly engagement survey.” A pause. ”Want the good news or bad news?”

He immediately disliked the question. ”Bad.”

The answer arrived instantly, papers shuffling on her end. ”Readers love Miyu.”

He blinked. ”That’s bad news?”

”It becomes bad news when they like her more than Ren.”

The room went very quiet, because that was possible. Actually possible, and he hadn’t fully let himself consider it until she said it out loud. ”Chapter Fifteen data is extreme,” she continued, another page turning. ”Miyu discussion is nearly double Ren discussion.”

Not ideal. Not ideal at all — the protagonist was supposed to remain the protagonist, at least in terms of who readers were actually invested in following. The realization lingered through the rest of the evening, and the manga itself suddenly presented a new challenge, a creative one this time instead of an industry one. He genuinely preferred those, even when they were hard.

Much later, he opened the reader analytics again — not growth, not retention. Character engagement specifically. Miyu dominated it, Ren remained strong but visibly behind, the gap sitting there plainly once he actually looked for it. Interesting. Very interesting, and it annoyed him immediately, because the solution wasn’t obvious the way a schedule fix had been. You couldn’t simply force readers to like a character more. Characters earned attention through what they did on the page, and Miyu had earned hers fair and square through three years of imprisonment and a holding-room smile that had never once felt manipulative. Now Ren needed to earn more of his own, on his own terms, without Haruki artificially propping him up.

For the first time in a while, Haruki’s thoughts focused entirely on storytelling. Not enemies, not corporations, not money. Storytelling, plain and uncomplicated by anything else. That felt refreshing in a way he hadn’t expected after the week he’d just had.

The apartment door opened shortly after eight. Yui stepped inside carrying groceries, and Haruki noticed something unusual immediately. She looked distracted. Not tired — distracted, and the distinction mattered. Usually Yui walked into a room like she owned it. Tonight she seemed somewhere else entirely, half a step behind her own body.

”Everything okay?”

The question escaped naturally. She froze, just briefly, then smiled too quickly to be convincing. He noticed anyway — years of friendship made certain things impossible to hide from each other, no matter how good either of them got at hiding things from everyone else.

”What’s wrong?”

She set the grocery bags down, avoided eye contact, opened the refrigerator, closed it, opened it again. Interesting. Very interesting — now she was acting like him, and that alone was concerning enough to make him put his stylus down completely.

Finally she spoke. ”The clinic got an offer.”

He waited. ”What kind of offer?”

She took longer to answer than he expected, long enough for the concern in his chest to actually start growing into something more specific.

”A merger.”

The word sounded harmless enough on its own. Her expression didn’t match it at all, and whatever came next clearly wasn’t going to be simple.

Outside, Tokyo glittered beneath a sea of lights, indifferent as always to what was happening in one small apartment. Inside, one crisis had finally ended, resolved plainly and without disaster after all his fear about it. Another had quietly arrived to take its place.

And for the first time in a long while, the problem belonged to Yui.
