Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 66: Chapter 66: The Cost of Debt

Haruki spent the next two days pretending Kuroda’s phone call didn’t bother him. The strategy failed completely.

The problem wasn’t the debt itself. The problem was Kuroda knowing about it. Creator Points, the Store, the debt system — those things belonged inside the Entertainment Creator System. Private, personal, impossible for anyone else to see. At least that was what he’d always assumed, without ever having a reason to question it before now. He wasn’t sure anymore.

The uncertainty followed him through breakfast, through work, through Chapter Seventeen revisions, through sleep. Especially through sleep. At 7:12 AM, the system appeared before he’d even left the bed.

[Creator Point Debt]

Outstanding Balance: 700 Repayment Rate: 40% Current Efficiency Penalty: Active Estimated Repayment Period: 97 Days

He stared at it. Ninety-seven days. Three months, longer than he’d expected, much longer. The realization wasn’t pleasant, because every future reward would arrive reduced from now until it cleared — every achievement, every milestone, every quest chipped down by the same 40% cut. The debt didn’t just take the borrowed points. It transformed growth itself into something smaller than it should have been. That was the actual price, not the number on the loan.

He got out of bed, made coffee, opened Chapter Seventeen, tried to focus on work. The attempt lasted nineteen minutes before another notification interrupted it.

Tournament Promotion EventFeatured Finalist InterviewsAttendance OptionalVisibility Bonus Available

He frowned. Visibility bonus — the wording felt suspiciously system-like despite originating from the platform itself rather than the Entertainment Creator System. The industry really did gamify everything eventually, one way or another.

His phone buzzed. Mizuno, skipping greetings as usual. ”You’re attending.”

Not a question. He looked at the email. ”The interview?”

”Yes.” A pause. ”You need visibility.”

The answer arrived instantly, not because she was wrong, but because she was obviously right. The growth slowdown still lingered from the earlier campaign. The tournament helped counter it. The interview helped more. Visibility mattered in exactly the way she’d been telling him it mattered for months now.

The conversation shifted toward logistics, then statistics, then tournament expectations. Eventually she mentioned something unexpected. ”Signal Zero jumped again.”

He leaned back. ”How much?”

Paper rustled on her end. ”Eight percent.”

That wasn’t normal. Not remotely normal for a single week’s growth. Signal Zero kept climbing at an absurd pace that should have annoyed him by now. Instead it motivated him — a dangerous reaction, or a healthy one, and he genuinely couldn’t tell which anymore.

The call ended. Haruki returned to work. Chapter Seventeen focused on fallout — the archive leak spreading, the Bureau panicking, journalists starting to ask questions nobody in the organization wanted answered. Ren finally experienced the real consequences of choosing action over safety back in Chapter Sixteen. Good. Consequences made stories stronger, and the irony of that lesson wasn’t lost on him given his own week.

At noon, another creator forum thread appeared. Tournament Favorites. A mistake, probably, but he clicked anyway. The ranking looked predictable — Aoi Fujimura, Haruki Amamiya, Akari Sato — but the comments underneath were less so.

Aoi is technically better.

Haruki writes better emotional moments.

Akari has the strongest characters.

Interesting. No — stop, he told himself, rubbing his forehead again. The habit really needed to die at some point.

One comment caught his attention specifically. Haruki’s biggest weakness is inconsistency. Thousands of replies followed it — arguments, defenses, examples pulled from specific Chapters, debates that had clearly been running since the moment the comment posted. It irritated him, because it was fair. Not entirely fair. Fair enough that arguing against it would’ve just proven the point.

At 4:43, another message arrived. Unknown Number. He almost ignored it. Almost. The message contained a screenshot, nothing else attached. The image showed a private creator discussion, several names blurred out, one still visible.

Hayato Kanzaki

A single comment sat beneath his name. Threadless Gate’s biggest enemy isn’t industry pressure. Another creator had replied: Then what is? And Hayato’s answer, sitting there unblurred for whoever had taken the screenshot to see: His own process.

The screenshot ended there. No context, no explanation, no source attached to any of it. Haruki stared, then laughed despite himself, because the bastard was right. Annoyingly, completely right, in a way that stung more than any of his public articles ever had.

His phone rang before he could think much further about who’d sent it. Akari Sato. He blinked, twice. Why was Akari calling him?

He answered. ”Hello?”

”Question.” No greeting, no introduction, straight to business. Interesting. No — enough. ”What question?”

She sounded mildly annoyed, apparently her default state whenever Aoi was involved in any way. ”Why is Aoi challenging people to productivity contests?”

He nearly choked on his coffee. ”What?”

”That’s my reaction.” The answer arrived immediately, and for the first time all day, genuine laughter escaped him — not nervous laughter, not tired laughter. Actual laughter.

”He challenged three creators,” she continued. A pause. ”Now he’s challenging me.” Another. ”I think he’s collecting rivals.”

That sounded exactly like something Aoi would do, and the thought made him smile despite the exhausting day behind it. Then something else occurred to him, clicking into place. Aoi wasn’t competing emotionally the way he was, chasing some feeling of proving himself. Aoi genuinely, straightforwardly enjoyed competition for its own sake, the way some people enjoyed puzzles. That difference mattered more than he’d fully appreciated before this call.

The conversation ended after several minutes of mutual confusion neither of them fully resolved.

Later that night, Haruki finished Chapter Seventeen’s final revisions. The Chapter looked strong, not perfect, strong. As he prepared the upload checklist — main file, backup file, export check, all the steps he’d built after the disaster weeks earlier — the system appeared.

[Debt Repayment Update]

Current Balance: 668 Points Recovered: 32 Progress: Slow Observation: The most dangerous debt is the one that improves your results.

The screen disappeared. Haruki stared at the empty monitor for a long moment, turning that last line over more than he wanted to admit.

Outside, Tokyo glowed beneath a sea of lights. Inside, the Chapter waited for upload. The tournament approached. The debt remained, chipping away at every future gain by forty percent until it cleared sometime in the next three months. The rivalry grew, sharper now that Aoi’s comment had a face and a specific cruelty behind it.

And somewhere in the city, three young creators continued moving toward the same destination from three different directions, none of them fully understanding the price of winning yet.

One of them had already started paying it.
