Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Yui Tanaka

Yui hated hospitals. Not because of needles, not because of doctors. Because hospitals smelled like waiting — waiting for results, waiting for news, waiting for decisions, waiting for lives to change one way or the other. The smell followed her the moment she stepped through the automatic doors.

The evening shift had barely started. Reception phones rang. Patients moved through hallways. Nurses hurried past carrying charts and tablets, the world continuing normally around her. Yui wished hers would too.

”Tanaka.” A supervisor called her name, and she knew what was coming before she’d even crossed the room. She wasn’t wrong.

The meeting lasted twelve minutes exactly — long enough to matter, short enough to feel cruel about it. Budget adjustments. Staff reductions. Shift restructuring. Future uncertainty, delivered in the familiar language people used when they were trying to make bad news sound professional instead of frightening.

When the meeting ended, she went back to work. Nothing had technically changed yet. Everything felt different anyway. Three months, maybe four — that was the estimate. The clinic would stay open until then. After that, nobody actually knew, and nobody was pretending to know either, which somehow made it worse than a clean bad answer would have.

A patient called her name. She smiled, helped, worked, continued, the way adults always seemed to keep continuing regardless of what had just been said to them in a back office twenty minutes earlier. Inside, irritation slowly built up. Not fear, not sadness. Irritation, because she’d spent years following a sensible path — study, work, stability, responsibility — and the reward apparently involved uncertainty anyway, same as everyone else’s path did. Wonderful.

At 8:17, she checked her phone, a bad habit she blamed entirely on Haruki. The missed-update thread continued growing.

Author becoming unreliable?

Hope this isn’t the beginning of schedule problems.

Still love the manga though.

She locked the screen immediately. The comments annoyed her — not because readers were wrong to say it, but because some of them were right, and that was worse. Haruki had made a mistake. A stupid mistake, an avoidable one, and now he was probably sitting alone somewhere convincing himself the world was ending over it. She knew him too well for her own good, an increasingly dangerous skill to have around someone like him.

A patient interrupted her thoughts — an elderly woman asking for directions. She helped, smiled, kept working. The irritation stayed underneath all of it, because another realization had arrived that she didn’t particularly enjoy sitting with. The clinic felt unstable. Haruki felt unstable. The future felt unstable in every direction she looked. The only real difference between them was that Haruki had chased his instability voluntarily, walked straight into it with both eyes open, while hers had just shown up uninvited on a Tuesday. The thought almost made her laugh, in a bitter kind of way.

When her shift finally ended, rain covered Tokyo. The streets shimmered under reflected neon, umbrellas moving through the crowds like drifting islands bumping gently into each other. She walked toward the station, then stopped, and instead of going home turned toward Haruki’s apartment. The decision surprised nobody, least of all her.

Twenty minutes later she stood outside his door. Knocked once, twice. No answer. She frowned, then used the spare key — a privilege earned through years of friendship and several separate incidents involving Haruki forgetting meals existed as a concept.

The apartment looked exactly as expected. Messy, organized chaos — coffee cups, reference books, drawing tablets, open folders scattered across every flat surface. Haruki sat at his desk, still working, of course. He looked terrible.

”Wow.”

He glanced back. ”What?”

She closed the door. ”You somehow look worse than the internet.”

That earned a weak laugh. Good — a useful sign that he was still in there somewhere under the exhaustion. She walked closer and noticed the new spreadsheet open on his screen. Release Checklist. Backup Checklist. File Verification Checklist. Interesting.

”I’m an idiot,” he said first.

”Correct.”

”No hesitation?”

”None.”

The conversation ended there, not because it was finished, but because agreement already existed and didn’t need any further discussion attached to it. She set convenience-store food on the desk, then sat on the floor beside him. Neither spoke for several minutes. Rain tapped softly against the windows, the apartment lights casting long shadows across the scattered manuscript pages, the city moving outside without paying either of them any attention.

Eventually he sighed. ”I made one mistake.”

She looked up from her drink. ”You made about fourteen.”

He blinked. ”What?”

”Wrong export.” She pointed. ”Bad file names.” Another point. ”No backup organization.” Another. ”No upload verification.” Another. ”Didn’t tell readers immediately.” Another. ”Skipped lunch.” Another. ”Skipped dinner.” Another, the list running longer than he’d apparently been prepared for.

He stared at her. ”Why are you keeping score?”

”Because you’re not.” The answer arrived instantly, and for the first time all day he genuinely laughed, the sound surprising both of them at once. Then silence returned — comfortable this time, not awkward, not dramatic. Simply present, the two of them sitting in it together the way they had a hundred times before.

She watched him work the same way she had for years now, back when he filled notebooks with story ideas nobody read yet, back before success had become part of the equation at all. Something uncomfortable settled in her chest while she watched, because she suddenly let herself think a thought she’d been avoiding all evening. If the clinic closed — what then? The question sat there unanswered. No plan appeared behind it, no solution waiting to be found if she just thought about it hard enough. Just uncertainty, plain and unfamiliar. For the first time in a long while, Yui genuinely didn’t know her next step, and she hated that feeling more than she expected to.

Haruki noticed eventually — not because she said anything, but because she’d gone quieter than usual. ”Something wrong?” The question escaped casually, almost absentmindedly, the way he asked things when he wasn’t fully paying attention yet.

She looked toward the rain-streaked window, then the city lights, then her drink. ”Maybe.”

He frowned. ”Maybe?”

She considered lying, briefly, then decided she was too tired for it tonight. ”The clinic might close.”

The room didn’t go quiet. No dramatic pause followed, because Haruki sat upright almost instantly. ”What?”

The reaction came so fast it nearly made her smile. Almost. For the next twenty minutes, the conversation finally belonged to her — not his schedule, not his manga, not his enemies. Her. The budget problems, the uncertainty, the rumors, the future she suddenly couldn’t see clearly anymore. He listened, actually listened, without trying to fix any of it, without pretending to understand more than he did, without turning it into a lesson the way he sometimes turned things now that he’d been living inside his own crisis for so long. Just listened.

Much later, after she left, Haruki sat staring at Chapter Fourteen again. The missed-update thread still existed. The reliability damage still existed. The financial pressure still existed exactly where he’d left it that morning.

Yet something had changed anyway. For the first time in months, he realized Yui’s future wasn’t automatically stable just because she wasn’t the one chasing a dream — that stability had never actually been guaranteed to her either, no matter how carefully she’d followed the sensible path.

Outside, rain continued falling across Tokyo. Inside, Chapter Fourteen waited, patient as always. And somewhere beyond the apartment walls, two young adults sat separately in the same city, both discovering the same thing at almost the same moment.

Uncertainty wasn’t reserved for creators.

Sometimes it found everyone.
