Chapter 53: Chapter 53: The Worst Advice

The missed update should have taught Haruki something. Unfortunately, he learned the wrong lesson. That was the actual problem. Not every mistake created wisdom. Sometimes mistakes created panic instead, and panic created worse mistakes on top of the original one.

The reliability thread remained active four days later. Not huge, not trending. Persistent, which was the worst kind of visibility a mistake could have. Every time a new reader discovered Threadless Gate, there was a chance they’d also discover author missed update sitting a few threads over. A small stain, but a visible one. A stain Haruki hated more than the actual missed Chapter itself.

So he made a decision. A terrible one. He increased the release schedule.

The idea sounded logical enough on its own terms. Readers worried about consistency — fine, give them more consistency. More Chapters. More updates. More proof, delivered fast, that he could be trusted after all. Release every five days instead of every seven. Recover trust faster. Recover momentum faster. Recover reputation faster.

He never once asked whether the schedule was actually sustainable. Only whether it solved the problem sitting in front of him that morning. That distinction would eventually cost him a lot.

At ten, he informed Mizuno. She called twelve minutes later.

”No.” The answer arrived before greetings, before explanations, before anything else.

He frowned. ”What?”

”No.” Same answer, same tone, delivered flat.

”It’s temporary.”

”No.”

”It’s only until the trust recovers.”

”No.”

He rubbed his forehead. ”Can you explain?”

She sighed — a dangerous sign by now. ”You’re responding emotionally.”

The statement irritated him immediately. ”I’m responding professionally.”

”You’re trying to erase embarrassment.” The sentence landed harder than the last one, because it hit closer to the truth than he wanted to admit. He looked at the reliability thread, then the analytics, then away from both.

”Readers don’t trust creators who panic,” she continued.

The conversation ended badly — not explosively, worse. Neither of them convinced the other of anything. For the first time since meeting her, Haruki ignored editorial advice entirely, and hung up still planning to do exactly what he’d already decided to do before she called.

At noon, the new schedule announcement went live. Reader reaction was immediate.

More updates? Nice.

Author is grinding.

Respect.

Let’s go.

The positive comments felt good. Too good, and that should have worried him more than it did. Instead it encouraged him, and by that same afternoon he’d updated his production calendar — every five days, no exceptions, no safety margin, no buffer built in anywhere. A dangerous amount of confidence had entered the plan without him noticing exactly when it arrived.

The system appeared. Not black-edged, not blue. Yellow, for the first time.

[Schedule Change Detected]

Risk Assessment: Elevated Recommendation: Build Chapter buffer first. Warning: Trust recovery and workload expansion are separate problems.

Haruki closed the window immediately — the third time in recent months he’d done exactly that to a system warning. The pattern mattered, even if he refused to actually notice it forming.

Across Tokyo, Yui finished another shift. The clinic uncertainty continued, management meetings increasing, rumors multiplying, nobody possessing a real answer for any of it yet. She hated uncertainty. Always had. The irony wasn’t lost on her, sitting on the train with her own future unresolved — Haruki chased uncertainty voluntarily, and she avoided it as a matter of principle, and somehow they’d both ended up standing in the exact same storm anyway.

On the ride home she opened the schedule announcement, read it once, then again. Her expression darkened, because she knew exactly why he’d done it. Not strategy. Fear, wearing a strategy’s clothes. The difference mattered more than he seemed to think it did.

That evening she arrived at the apartment, no warning, no text. The moment she walked in she held up her phone, pointing at the announcement. ”What is this?”

He already knew where this was going. ”A schedule update.”

”No.” The answer arrived instantly. ”This is a panic response.”

He looked away — a dangerous sign, and she noticed it immediately. For several seconds neither of them backed down. Then he finally spoke. ”I need to recover trust.”

”By creating a bigger problem?”

The words struck harder than she probably intended, because part of him already feared she was right about it. The argument continued from there — not shouting, not dramatic, just real disagreement, the kind that didn’t resolve itself just because both people cared about each other.

Eventually she stood. ”You want my opinion?”

He hesitated, then nodded.

She pointed toward the drawing tablet. ”You’re treating readers like judges.” Then toward the release calendar. ”And you’re treating punishment like productivity.” She grabbed her bag. ”Those are different things.”

Then she left. No resolution, no compromise, no tidy lesson wrapped around the exit. Just disagreement, sitting there in the apartment after the door closed behind her.

The place felt strangely empty afterward. Haruki stared at the new schedule, then at Chapter Fifteen, then at the reliability thread still glowing faintly in another tab. The comments still bothered him. The embarrassment still bothered him. The failure still bothered him in a way that hadn’t faded even a little over four days.

The new schedule felt like action, at least. Action felt better than helplessness, which was probably the whole reason he’d reached for it in the first place instead of sitting with the discomfort the way Mizuno had told him to. Whether it was the right action remained an entirely different question, one he wasn’t in the mood to actually sit with tonight.

Near midnight, he finished planning the next three releases. The system appeared again — same yellow warning, same recommendation, same concern laid out in the exact same words as before. This time he didn’t even read it. He closed it automatically, the way he might swat away a fly, without giving it a fraction of the consideration it had asked for.

Outside, Tokyo glittered beneath clear skies, indifferent as always to one creator’s late-night calendar planning. Inside, an eighteen-year-old convinced himself he’d solved a problem, checking the finished schedule one more time before finally shutting the laptop for the night.

The truth was less comforting than the feeling of having acted. He hadn’t solved anything.

He’d started a new problem instead. And unlike the missed update, this mistake would take far longer than a single Chapter to repair — assuming he even let himself notice it needed repairing before the damage compounded past the point of an easy fix.
