Chapter 100: Chapter 100: The Choice

The envelope changed everything.

Not immediately.

Not dramatically.

---

The photograph sat on Haruki’s desk for three days.

---

Three days of contracts.

Three days of meetings.

Three days of pretending it wasn’t there.

---

The photograph waited patiently.

---

Kuroda.

Unknown faces.

Red circles.

---

And five handwritten words.

---

Ask Kuroda about Project Ghost.

---

The instruction felt simple.

---

The implications didn’t.

---

On Monday morning, Haruki received the final publisher offer.

---

The one Mizuno predicted.

---

The strongest offer arrived last.

---

Exactly as promised.

---

Tachibana Media.

---

Rika’s family company.

---

The document appeared inside his inbox at 9:04 AM.

---

Haruki opened it.

---

Then reread it.

---

Then reread it again.

---

Not because it was complicated.

---

Because it was different.

---

Very different.

---

The advance wasn’t the highest.

---

The marketing package wasn’t the largest.

---

The immediate rewards weren’t the most impressive.

---

Instead:

---

Creator ownership.

Creative control.

Long-term rights.

---

The offer focused on the future.

---

Exactly as Rika suggested.

---

The realization felt uncomfortable.

---

Because the decision suddenly became harder.

---

Not easier.

---

At noon, Haruki met Mizuno.

---

A small café.

Rain outside.

Contracts everywhere.

---

The atmosphere felt suspiciously final.

---

Mizuno reviewed every option again.

---

Yamashita.

---

Hoshikawa.

---

Tachibana Media.

---

Three roads.

---

Three futures.

---

The discussion lasted nearly two hours.

---

Arguments.

Counterarguments.

Numbers.

Risks.

---

Actual work.

---

No shortcuts.

---

Good.

---

Very good.

---

Eventually Mizuno closed the final folder.

---

Then asked:

---

”What are you afraid of?”

---

Not:

Which offer is best?

---

Not:

Which company pays more?

---

Fear.

---

The real question.

---

Haruki looked out the café window.

---

Rain struck the glass.

Pedestrians hurried past.

Tokyo continued moving.

---

The answer arrived slowly.

---

”Making the wrong choice.”

---

Mizuno nodded.

---

Expected.

---

Then:

---

”Good.”

---

Of course.

---

Everything became good eventually.

---

The editor folded her arms.

---

”People who aren’t afraid of decisions usually don’t understand them.”

---

A pause.

---

Then:

---

”Pick the future you can live with.”

---

Simple.

---

Difficult.

---

Useful.

---

Classic Mizuno.

---

The meeting ended.

---

The decision didn’t.

---

That evening, Haruki walked.

---

Not because he needed exercise.

---

Because he needed distance.

---

Distance from contracts.

Distance from publishers.

Distance from himself.

---

The city lights reflected across wet streets.

Cars passed.

Conversations drifted through the evening air.

---

Then somebody appeared beside him.

---

Kuroda.

---

Naturally.

---

At this point, Haruki suspected the man possessed teleportation abilities.

---

Nothing else explained it.

---

The older creator carried canned coffee.

---

Also naturally.

---

”You’re avoiding something.”

---

No greeting.

---

No surprise.

---

Straight to the problem.

---

Haruki held up the photograph.

---

The reaction arrived immediately.

---

Tiny.

---

Almost invisible.

---

Enough.

---

Enough to matter.

---

Kuroda recognized it.

---

Completely.

---

For several seconds neither spoke.

---

The city noise filled the gap.

---

Then Kuroda sighed.

---

A rare sound.

---

Very rare.

---

”Where did you get that?”

---

The answer didn’t matter.

---

Both knew it.

---

The important thing was something else.

---

Haruki looked at the photograph.

---

Then at Kuroda.

---

Then finally asked:

---

”What is Project Ghost?”

---

The older creator stared at him.

---

Actually stared.

---

The expression contained something unfamiliar.

---

Not amusement.

Not irritation.

Not caution.

---

Regret.

---

A surprising amount of regret.

---

The silence stretched.

---

Not dramatic.

---

Heavy.

---

Finally Kuroda spoke.

---

”It started as a creator project.”

---

A pause.

---

”A long time ago.”

---

Another.

---

”People thought they could change the industry.”

---

The rain intensified.

---

Traffic lights reflected across wet pavement.

---

Kuroda continued.

---

”We were wrong.”

---

The answer raised more questions than it solved.

---

Naturally.

---

Haruki frowned.

---

”Who was involved?”

---

Kuroda looked at the photograph.

---

Then at the crossed-out face.

---

The one somebody intentionally obscured.

---

His expression hardened.

---

Slightly.

---

Enough.

---

”People who should’ve walked away sooner.”

---

Wonderful.

---

Absolutely wonderful.

---

The mystery remained a mystery.

---

Exactly as expected.

---

Before Haruki could ask more, Kuroda stopped walking.

---

Then said something unexpected.

---

”Don’t chase Ghost Project.”

---

The warning arrived quietly.

---

Without drama.

Without threat.

---

Which made it more convincing.

---

Haruki stared.

---

”Why?”

---

The answer arrived immediately.

---

”Because it doesn’t care whether you’re curious.”

---

The older creator looked away.

---

Toward the city.

Toward the rain.

Toward old memories.

---

Then:

---

”It only cares whether you become involved.”

---

The statement lingered long after Kuroda left.

---

Because it didn’t sound like advice.

---

It sounded like experience.

---

That night, Haruki returned home carrying two problems.

---

Ghost Project.

---

And the contracts.

---

One mystery.

One decision.

---

The photograph remained on the desk.

---

The offers remained open.

---

The future remained uncertain.

---

Then the system appeared.

---

For the first time in weeks, the notification looked different.

---

Creator’s Crossroads

Progress:

100%

---

Evaluation Complete

---

Please choose.

---

Three contract options appeared.

---

Below them:

---

Future Rank Advancement Available

Condition:

Commit to a path.

---

Reward:

Unknown

---

Failure:

Opportunity Lost

---

Haruki stared at the screen.

---

Then at the contracts.

---

Then at the manuscript.

---

Then at the city beyond the window.

---

Everything converged.

---

Tournament.

Debt.

Criticism.

Publishers.

Yui.

Sora.

Aoi.

Mizuno.

Kuroda.

---

Everything led here.

---

A decision.

---

Not a battle.

Not a mystery.

Not a system reward.

---

A choice.

---

For several minutes he remained motionless.

---

Then reached for one contract.

---

The future finally moved.

---

And somewhere inside the system, something awakened.

---

Waiting for the answer.
