Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 59: 59 harvest wheat

The wheat harvest comes during the rainy season, so it’s safer to gather it in.

After resting for about half an hour, they set out with sickles.

At that time, the village chief’s family was having lunch. Xu Chunjiao saw Su Yuanyuan coming over again. Their family had just been talking about this girl, and didn’t expect her to be such a grateful person. This girl sure works hard.

”Yuanyuan, come over and have some more to eat.”

”Aunt, I’m full. I’ll get to work now.”

Both of the village chief’s neighbors were also harvesting wheat and were very envious of the village chief. This girl coming to help was like having an extra strong laborer.

The three young men finished eating and initially wanted to rest awhile, but seeing the girl, a stranger, had already started working, they got up to work as well.

Yang Hongwen had already finished eating and was smoking, ”This girl is really good.”

Xu Chunjiao cleaned up the dishes, ”Yeah, she’s so sensible.”

”She couldn’t afford not to be anyway.” Yang Hongwen said and got up to work too.

They worked until five thirty. Su Yuanyuan harvested more rounds than in the morning, and they would definitely finish harvesting their family’s wheat by tomorrow.

The day after tomorrow, she could help Hu Chunhua with his wheat.

”Uncle, Aunt, I’m going home now. I’ll come back tomorrow.”

”Girl, Aunt thanks you.”

Su Yuanyuan shook her head with a smile and turned to leave.

Yang Hongwen let his eldest son go home to drive a cart to take the wheat to the threshing ground.

The threshing ground is public. It’s better to hurry and thresh the wheat now while there’s space.

The Yang Family of five brought all the wheat they harvested today back to the threshing ground, which wasn’t far from their home; they could see it from their doorstep. However, Yang Hongwen still went to sleep at the threshing ground at night.

If it got stolen at the threshing ground, it really would be unjust.

Su Yuanyuan came home, fed the livestock, and then started stuffing dried water plants into a burlap sack. It broke apart as she stuffed it in, and she was busy until after seven. Only then did she finish and store everything in the west room.

She was so tired she couldn’t straighten her back. She took a bath in her space, drank some Spiritual Spring Water, and only then did she recover. It was truly exhausting.

After eating to her fill, she set an alarm and fell asleep instantly on the heated brick bed.

Every day the alarm rang once and she could get up, but today it rang several times before she did. After drinking a glass of Spiritual Spring Water, she went to the reservoir. There were plenty of fish and shrimp today, so she decided not to use the ground cage traps today and just let them be for a few days.

She went to the fields, where the Yang Family was already working, and joined them in harvesting.

They finished harvesting by four in the afternoon. ”Girl, Aunt thanks you. If it were in previous years, we’d have to work another day tomorrow.”

Su Yuanyuan smiled, ”Helping out gives me peace of mind. Uncle, Aunt, I’m going back.”

Today Hu Chunhua’s family also harvested wheat. At night, his family ate dinner together.

”Sister-in-law, you’ve been nice to that troublemaker for nothing; she’s been helping the village chief’s family harvest wheat.”

Hu Chunhua didn’t even lift his head; these two lazy bones are only good for gossiping, unable to work or eat efficiently.

The next day, after tidying up at home, Su Yuanyuan took her sickle to Hu Chunhua’s family field.

”Uncle, I’m here to help with the wheat.”

”Girl, you don’t need to. You must be really tired these two days.”

”It’s okay. I’ll do as much as I can. Aunt, you two have been so good to me, I really have nothing to repay you with, I can only help with some work.” She repeated her words to the village chief’s family again.

”Girl, you don’t have to do this.”

Su Yuanyuan just laughed, bent over, and started working.

Arriving late, she caught up with Hu Chunhua’s two sisters-in-law at the field head. She ignored them, immediately turning back to harvest more.

”Yuanyuan, take a break.”

”Aunt, it’s okay. Let’s hurry, or it will be troublesome if it rains.”

Approaching eleven o’clock, she mentioned she was heading back.

At this point, Hu Chunhua looked at his two dawdling sisters-in-law.

Old Mrs. Yang came to bring food and noticed the work was faster than in previous years. She thought it was because the two incompetent daughters-in-law were working harder. ”Mom, Yuanyuan the girl came and did it, faster than the second and third sisters-in-law. Even a young girl knows to fear rain, they aren’t working as much as she is.”

Hu Chunhua was furious. What kind of people were they, indebted to him?

”Mom, if they continue like this, then we’ll split the family.”

Old Mrs. Yang glanced at her eldest daughter-in-law. She understood inside but knew her palms and the backs of her hands were both flesh and blood. She understood the two younger sons were useless, so she wanted her oldest son and daughter-in-law to help some.

The eldest daughter-in-law is a generous person and hasn’t suggested splitting the family all these years. She must be fed up by now.

”Okay, after the wheat harvest, we’ll split the family.” She’s old now, and depending on her two younger sons would surely bring suffering. It’s still better to rely on the eldest family for a living.

If she really kept holding on, she’d surely have nothing good in the future.

The two sisters-in-law quickly came over when they heard the mother-in-law, ”Mom, we don’t want to split the family.”

Old Mrs. Yang didn’t even bother to pay attention to the two of them.

Hu Chunhua didn’t expect his mother-in-law to finally agree to split the family. She was stunned, but she soon beamed with a smile.

In the afternoon, when Su Yuanyuan came over to work, she saw the other two daughters-in-law of the Yang family working even slower. But Hu Chunhua was working faster than in the morning.

The two of them caught up together. ”Yuanyuan. We’re going to split the family after the wheat harvest.” Hu Chunhua’s face was full of smiles.

Su Yuanyuan smiled at Hu Chunhua. She watched on the side of her man, seeing Yang Minggang’s two brothers slacking off again; such people were lucky if they didn’t starve to death in the future.

Also, it was good to split the family now. In those famine years to come, they wouldn’t have to carry the burden for them.

The next day, Su Yuanyuan helped for another day. They couldn’t finish today and would need another day tomorrow. To help Hu Chunhua split the family sooner, Su Yuanyuan came again on the third day.

”Yuanyuan, Aunt thanks you.”

”Aunt, do you need to be polite with me? I’m going home. It’s time to feed the pigs.”

The next day, Su Yuanyuan rested at home, cleared the grass from the yard, and fetched water to irrigate the vegetables.

Now in the village, many families had finished collecting their wheat.

Su Yuanyuan felt that if she ever planted wheat, she wouldn’t send it to the threshing ground.

Something really happened. Yang Minggang’s two brothers colluded to steal their family’s wheat and were caught by Yang Xue. It became a joke in the village. How could there be thieves stealing from their own family?

Old Mrs. Yang was so angry she fell ill. She divided the family that very night, splitting everything evenly into four parts.

That night, while lying on the heated brick bed, Hu Chunhua said, ”Minggang, let’s build a house and move out; I don’t want to live with them anymore.”

”But we only have two hundred yuan.”

”It’s fine, I’ll go back to my parents’ to borrow. I don’t want to stay with them even for a moment.”

Yang Minggang gritted his teeth. ”Okay, tomorrow I’ll dry the wheat, and you go back to your parents’, I’ll ask big brother where we should build our house?”

”Far from here.”

Yang Minggang knew his wife had suffered all these years, so he didn’t refuse.
