Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 48: Chapter 48 — Second Bite

The quest that finally gave Arlen his opportunity came almost two months after Millbrook, a modest posting for herb collection deep enough into the outer forest’s eastern reaches that few adventurers bothered with it regularly — the kind of assignment that promised solitude as much as coin.

He’d been watching for exactly this sort of chance since his recovery, turning over in his mind, during quiet moments at Garrett’s training yard or alone in his room at night, exactly how he wanted to approach his next deliberate test. Enduring Vitality and Water Affinity had both arrived by circumstance rather than intention — a hungry evening after a hunt, a fisherman’s grateful extra catch. This time, he wanted to choose.

He’d settled, after careful consideration, on something that might grant him an elemental ability rather than another physical or utility-based one — a deliberate step toward the broader, more varied toolkit he’d promised himself during recovery. The guild bestiary described a creature suited to exactly that purpose, if he was willing to travel slightly further than the herb quest strictly required: a small population of Rank 2 ember-tailed lizards, known to nest near a scorched, sulfurous clearing a few hours past his assigned gathering grounds, their bodies carrying a natural affinity for heat that occasionally manifested in minor fire-based traits.

He completed the herb quest first, methodical as always, before making his way further east toward the clearing the bestiary had described.

The ember-tailed lizards proved easy enough to locate, drawn as they were to a patch of naturally warmed earth where some old volcanic vent still bled faint heat up through cracked stone. Arlen approached carefully, studying the small colony from a cautious distance — perhaps a dozen lizards, each roughly the length of his forearm, their scales a deep, banded red-orange that seemed to shimmer faintly in the sunlight, tails ending in small, glowing embers that pulsed gently with each creature’s movement.

He caught one cleanly with a snare he’d learned to set from watching Halvard work during Eldrin’s expedition months earlier, and dispatched it quickly, efficiently, with none of the hesitation his first jackal encounter had carried.

He built a careful fire that evening at a safe distance from the colony’s remaining members, preparing the lizard meat with the same deliberate attention he gave every meal now — a simple seasoning of wild herbs gathered along the way, the meat itself surprisingly tender once properly cooked, carrying a faint, smoky flavor unlike anything he’d tasted before.

He ate slowly, deliberately, cataloguing the taste with the same careful attention he gave everything else about the experience — a habit that had become, somewhere along the way, as natural to him as breathing.

Rich, slightly gamey undertone. Smoky in a way that suggests the creature’s internal heat affects the meat itself, not just the surface char from cooking. Better paired with something sharp — wished I’d had proper citrus or vinegar to cut the richness.

The warmth arrived partway through his second helping, exactly as it had the two previous times — low and centered, spreading outward through his chest with the same patient, unmistakable certainty.

He set down his food and waited, breath held, watching his own hands as the sensation built toward its familiar culmination.

Heat gathered behind his ribs, sharper and more insistent than the gentler warmth of his previous awakenings, building toward something that felt, for a moment, almost like the edge of genuine pain before it settled, all at once, into place.

A name surfaced in his mind, certain and whole.

Ember Touch.

He sat with the sensation a long moment after it faded, testing the edges of understanding that came bundled alongside the name itself — a felt sense, vague but present, of controlled heat gathering at his fingertips, waiting to be called upon.

He tested it carefully, holding his palm out over the remains of his cookfire, and found, to his genuine astonishment, that a faint warmth gathered at his fingertips independent of the flame itself — not overwhelming, not yet anything close to what he imagined a proper fire mage might command, but real, tangible, and unmistakably his.

He experimented cautiously for the better part of an hour, coaxing small, controlled flickers of heat into being, extinguishing them just as deliberately, careful not to overextend himself into anything reckless this far from proper support.

Three abilities now, he thought, sitting back against a fallen log once he’d exhausted his curiosity for the evening, the fire’s glow casting long shadows across the clearing. Enduring Vitality. Water Affinity. Now this — something that actually looks like proper Mana, not just Aura in disguise.

The realization settled into him with a mixture of satisfaction and renewed caution. This ability, more than the previous two, would need careful handling. Enduring Vitality could pass, plausibly, as simple physical conditioning enhanced by genuine training. Water Affinity had proven subtle enough to demonstrate rarely and quietly. But actual fire manipulation, visible and undeniable the moment he called upon it, demanded a different level of discretion entirely.

He wrote carefully in his journal that night, the fire slowly dying down beside him.

Third ability. Ember Touch — controlled heat, gathering at will, still testing its full extent but clearly more than simple resistance or passive utility. This one I need to be considerably more careful with. Enduring Vitality and Water Affinity, I could plausibly demonstrate by accident, folding them into ordinary explanation. This is different. If anyone sees me summon fire from nothing, there’s no casual dismissal available. That’s a Mana ability, plain and undeniable, and it raises the stakes of my own cover story considerably.

Good thing, then, that I chose this deliberately, in private, exactly the way I promised myself I would going forward. No witnesses. No explanations required yet. Just me, and the growing understanding that whatever this power actually is, it continues rewarding curiosity as reliably as it has every time so far.

I think, given time, this fits neatly enough into the Dual-Affinity story — assuming I introduce it carefully, gradually, rather than all at once. Aura first, established through genuine training with Garrett. Mana emerging later, as though it simply Awakened in its own time, the way the guild texts describe such things happening for genuine hybrid cultivators. The timeline works, if I’m patient about revealing it.

Patient. That word keeps coming back to me, in every part of this life I’ve built. I suppose it’s served me well enough so far that I don’t see any reason to abandon it now.

He closed the journal, banked the fire carefully, and settled in for the night beneath a sky thick with stars, already turning over, with quiet and growing anticipation, exactly how and when he might finally, carefully, let the world begin to see this newest, most conspicuous piece of himself.
