Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 22: Chapter 22 — The Boundary

They reached it a little past midmorning, and Arlen knew it the moment they arrived, even before Yorin said anything to confirm it.

The forest simply changed.

It wasn’t a wall, or a clean line drawn across the earth the way maps sometimes made boundaries look. It was subtler than that, and somehow more striking for being subtle — the trees ahead grew wider around the trunk than anything behind them, some easily three or four times the girth of the oldest tree Arlen had seen on the outer trail, their canopies merging so completely overhead that the daylight filtering down took on a deep, cathedral-green quality unlike anything he’d walked beneath before. The air itself felt different, heavier somehow, carrying a mineral, growing-things smell that reminded him, distantly, of standing too close to a lightning strike.

He stopped walking without quite meaning to, and stood there at the edge of it, staring.

”First time doing that too,” Reya said, coming to a halt beside him, her own gaze drifting upward toward the impossible height of the canopy. ”Doesn’t matter how many times people tell you about it. Seeing it’s different.”

”It’s—” Arlen searched for the word and couldn’t quite find one that felt adequate. ”I didn’t expect it to feel like this.”

”Nobody does.” Petra had come up on his other side, her logbook already open, sketching quick notes about canopy density and the strange, resinous quality of the deadfall scattered at the boundary’s edge. ”The mana reading jumps significantly right here — you can practically feel the difference underfoot if you pay attention. Whatever’s sustaining growth like this, it’s operating on an entirely different scale than the outer forest.”

Yorin called a halt at the actual boundary line rather than pressing further in, exactly as the expedition’s terms had specified — survey and documentation from the edge, not a deep incursion. He and Petra set to work almost immediately, moving along the boundary’s visible edge with careful, methodical purpose, marking landmarks, testing mana density at intervals, sketching rough terrain notes into a shared logbook that would presumably become, eventually, part of the guild’s cartography archive.

Arlen’s job, for the moment, was simply to hold camp a short distance back from the boundary itself, keeping the fire ready, supplies organized, and staying alert while the others worked. He didn’t mind the wait. If anything, it gave him time to simply look — really look, the way he hadn’t quite managed to on the walk in, still catching his breath from the sheer scale of what he was seeing.

He was crouched by the cookfire, keeping half an eye on a simmering pot and half his attention on the tree line, when Dorn, stationed nearby on watch, went suddenly and completely still.

”Don’t move,” Dorn said quietly. ”Just look. Slow.”

Arlen followed his gaze toward a break in the canopy perhaps sixty yards off, where a shaft of that deep green light fell across a small clearing within the middle forest proper — and saw it.

The creature was enormous, easily the size of a cart horse, its hide a mottled, mossy green that made it almost invisible against the deep forest backdrop except for the way it moved, unhurried and massive, antlers branching upward in a tangle that looked less like bone and more like living wood, small clusters of pale flowers growing directly from the tines. It paused at the clearing’s edge, lowered its head to graze on something Arlen couldn’t identify from this distance, entirely unbothered by anything beyond its immediate meal.

”What is that?” Arlen breathed.

”Greatstag. Rank 4, if the guild bestiary’s accurate — territorial, but not aggressive unless provoked.” Dorn kept his voice low, his hand resting near his weapon without drawing it. ”We’re well outside its usual range, this close to the boundary. Good sign, actually — means it’s comfortable enough here that nothing’s pushed it out recently.”

Arlen watched it a moment longer, the sheer scale and strangeness of it settling into his chest with something that felt less like fear and more like the same overwhelming wonder he’d felt as a boy watching adventurers pass through Greyhaven’s gate, except magnified now by an order of magnitude he hadn’t quite been prepared for.

The greatstag lifted its head eventually, ears swiveling toward some sound Arlen couldn’t detect, and moved off unhurriedly into the deeper trees, vanishing from sight within moments despite its size.

”Rank 4,” Arlen repeated quietly, once it had gone, turning the number over the way he turned over most new information now. ”That’s not even close to the top of the scale, is it?”

”Not remotely,” Dorn said. ”This is still just the boundary. Deeper in, the ranks climb higher, and the guild’s own notes get considerably thinner the further you go — half of what’s out there past the true middle forest, nobody’s properly documented at all.”

Arlen thought about that for a long moment, watching the empty clearing where the creature had stood, and felt something settle into place in his chest — not disappointment at how far he still had to go, but something closer to the opposite. A kind of quiet, steadying excitement at the sheer scale of what remained unexplored, even here, this close to a city he’d lived beside his entire life without ever knowing this existed within reach of it.

Petra and Yorin returned to camp a while later, their survey work for the day complete, and the group ate a modest midday meal together before Yorin called for the party to begin the return leg — no further push into the boundary planned for this expedition, the terms of the commission satisfied by what they’d already documented.

”That’s it?” Arlen asked, unable to fully mask his disappointment.

”That’s the job,” Reya said, not unkindly. ”We came to survey the edge, not push past it. Pushing past it’s a different expedition entirely, with a different party and a different rank requirement.” She studied him a moment, something knowing in her expression. ”You’ll get there eventually. Everyone who actually wants to does, if they’re patient enough about it.”

Arlen nodded, and found, somewhat to his own surprise, that he wasn’t nearly as disappointed as he’d expected to be. He’d seen enough today — the scale of the trees, the strange weight of the air, the greatstag moving unhurried through light he’d never imagined existed inside a forest — to understand, more clearly than any tavern story or guild bestiary entry ever could have taught him, exactly how much world still waited beyond everything he currently knew.

He wrote it all down that evening, camped once more just short of the boundary before the full return journey the next day, filling nearly three full pages of his journal with details he was terrified of forgetting — the color of the light, the smell of the air, the exact shape of the greatstag’s antlers, the number four sitting in his mind like a small, humbling promise of everything still ahead.

Rank 4, and that’s still just the edge, he wrote, underlining it once, almost without meaning to. I used to think the outer forest was enormous. I was wrong. I think I’m going to be wrong about that a great many more times before I’m done.

I don’t mind. I think that might be the whole point.
