Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 44: Chapter 44 — The Hunt

Dawn broke gray and cold over the Ashen Frontier, mist still clinging to the lower branches of the Verdant Crown as Commander Vessa Thorne’s response team assembled at the edge of the forward camp.

She checked her spear one final time, running a thumb along the haft where old runework had been worn smooth by years of use, and glanced over the six others who would be moving with her.

”Sorrel, you scout ahead, wide berth,” she said. ”I want eyes on it before it has eyes on us. Doran, Selene — you hold the center same as you did at Millbrook, only tighter this time. Bastian, your barrier goes up the moment contact’s confirmed, not a second after. I won’t lose anyone to hesitation.”

Bastian nodded, adjusting the weight of the ward-stones strung across his chest. Doran hefted his shield, testing its balance with the ease of long habit, while Selene murmured through a string of preparatory incantations under her breath, her fingers tracing sigils in the air that dissolved as quickly as they formed.

”And the healer?” Doran asked, glancing toward the quiet young woman standing slightly apart from the rest, her satchel already open, potions and bindings arranged with careful precision.

”Wren stays back of the formation, always,” Vessa said. ”If I have to choose between losing ground and losing her, I lose ground. Understood?”

Wren nodded once, saying nothing, though something steady in her expression suggested she’d heard the same instruction from Vessa more than once before.

They moved out as the mist began to burn away, following the trail Corrin’s mana survey had marked two days earlier, the forest around them unnaturally quiet in a way that pressed against everyone’s nerves despite months of collective experience in wilder terrain.

Sorrel found it first, exactly as Vessa had wanted.

She returned at a dead run less than an hour into the advance, twin blades still sheathed, her expression tight with the particular focus of a scout who’d seen exactly what she needed to see and nothing more.

”Half a mile ahead, near the ruin’s collapsed entrance,” she reported, breathless but steady. ”It’s larger than the accounts suggested. And it knows we’re coming.”

”How?” Doran asked.

”It was already facing our direction when I spotted it. Wasn’t hunting. Was waiting.”

Vessa’s jaw tightened at that, though she said nothing beyond a curt nod, signaling the group forward with a raised hand.

They found it in a wide, churned clearing where the ruin’s exposed stonework rose jagged from the earth, the creature’s massive form settled at the clearing’s center like something that had simply decided this ground belonged to it now. Up close, in proper daylight, its shape resolved with slightly more clarity than the fragmented reports of Millbrook had managed — vast and dark, its outline blurring and shifting faintly at the edges as though the eye itself struggled to hold it in focus, pale luminous eyes fixed unblinking on the approaching party.

”Formation,” Vessa said quietly, and the group spread into the shape they’d drilled a hundred times before — Doran and Selene forward and center, Bastian a step behind them already weaving the first threads of his barrier spell, Sorrel peeling wide toward the flank, Wren settling well back with her satchel open and ready.

The creature moved first.

It surged forward with a speed that defied its size, the ground erupting in its wake exactly as it had at Millbrook, and Selene’s spell met it a half-second before impact — a concentrated wall of wind, not meant to wound but to blind, kicking up a violent curtain of dust and debris across the creature’s path. It faltered, just slightly, momentum breaking against the sudden disorientation, and Doran planted his shield in that same instant, aura flaring blue-white along its rim as the creature’s full weight crashed against it.

The impact staggered him backward three full strides, boots gouging furrows into the churned earth, but the shield held, aura absorbing the worst of the collision in a shower of visible sparks.

”Barrier, now!” Vessa called, and Bastian’s dome snapped into place around the party’s position an instant later, shimmering faintly gold against the gray morning light.

The creature reared back, striking the barrier with a limb too long and too jointed to belong to anything natural, and the dome shuddered, held, though Bastian’s face tightened with visible strain at the effort of keeping it stable.

”It’s testing us,” Selene said, already weaving her next spell, frost gathering pale and sharp along her outstretched fingers. ”Feeling out the barrier’s limits before committing properly.”

”Then we don’t give it the chance,” Vessa said, and moved.

She crossed the distance to the creature’s flank in a burst of speed that left afterimages trailing behind her, spear leveled, aura sheathing the weapon’s runed length in a corona of pale light. She drove the strike home along the same seam Sorrel’s earlier scouting had marked as a probable weak point, and the creature’s shriek tore through the clearing — not quite a roar, not quite the resonant almost-word Arlen had described, but close enough that Wren, watching from the rear, flinched visibly despite herself.

Black ichor welled from the wound, and the creature spun with a violence that nearly caught Vessa in its retaliation, only her own considerable speed carrying her clear of a strike that split the ground where she’d stood a heartbeat before.

Sorrel used the opening.

She darted in low from the opposite flank while the creature’s attention remained fixed on Vessa, twin blades flashing in a rapid, precise sequence that opened a second wound along what might have been a joint in the creature’s shifting hide. She was already retreating before it could fully register the strike, blades flicking clean in practiced motion as she fell back toward the formation’s relative safety.

”Two wounds,” Selene called, unleashing her frost spell in the same breath — a lance of ice that drove deep into the first wound Vessa had opened, the creature’s shriek rising in pitch as the cold visibly spread, slowing its movements by fractions that nonetheless mattered.

Doran surged forward then, shield leading, driving a shoulder-charge into the creature’s foreleg with enough force, backed by his own aura, to buckle it momentarily off balance. The creature’s massive head swung toward him in retaliation, and for one heart-stopping moment it looked as though the strike would connect fully — until Bastian’s barrier, redirected with a shout of effort, hardened along that precise arc, absorbing enough of the blow that Doran was merely thrown rather than crushed outright, tumbling hard across the churned earth.

”Doran’s down!” Sorrel called.

Wren was already moving, weaving through the chaos with the same unhurried focus Vessa had drilled into her, healing magic gathering warm and golden around her hands even as she knelt beside him, murmuring words too quiet for the others to hear over the ongoing fight.

The creature, wounded now in three places, no longer seemed to be testing anything. Its attacks came faster, wilder, tearing through the surrounding trees with an indiscriminate fury that spoke less of a calculated hunter and more of something cornered, furious, and increasingly desperate.

”It’s not disengaging,” Selene shouted, retreating a step to avoid a wild swing that splintered the trunk beside her. ”Whatever held it back at Millbrook, it’s not holding back now.”

Vessa pressed forward again, spear singing through another precise strike, aura flaring bright along the runed blade as it found the same weakened flank a third time. The creature’s massive form shuddered, a full-body convulsion that sent a visible tremor through the earth beneath everyone’s feet, and for one suspended moment, it seemed almost as though the fight had turned decisively in the party’s favor.

Then the creature’s form began to blur at the edges more violently than before, the shifting quality of its outline intensifying into something that made even Vessa take an involuntary step back, her composed expression finally, unmistakably, cracking into something closer to alarm.

”Sorrel, fall back to the barrier — now!” she called, voice sharp with an urgency none of them had heard from her before. ”Bastian, reinforce, whatever’s left in you—”

The creature’s shape convulsed once more, and the light around it seemed, for one impossible instant, to bend inward toward its center, the ground itself groaning under some pressure none of them could properly name.
