Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 37: Chapter 37 — What the Guild Doesn’t Know

The mobilized camp had reassembled a safe distance from Millbrook by the time Arlen was carried in on an improvised stretcher, torches burning in a tight defensive perimeter around the makeshift medical tents that had been erected in haste once the scale of the night’s casualties became clear.

Aria took over his care the moment he arrived, her healing magic considerably more refined than Petra’s field treatment had been, and Arlen felt the worst of the pain finally recede into something manageable as she worked, murmuring instructions to an assistant healer about binding and rest rather than further magic, his ribs apparently mended enough now that pushing further risked more harm than good.

”You’ll ache for days regardless,” Aria told him, her calm, practiced bedside manner offering its own kind of comfort. ”But you’ll live, which is rather more than anyone expected an hour ago.”

”Ilvera?” he asked, the question arriving before he’d fully decided to voice it.

Aria’s expression tightened, just slightly. ”Stable. Critical, but stable. I’ve done what I can for tonight — the rest will depend on how she holds through until morning.” She didn’t offer false reassurance, and Arlen found he respected her more for it.

He was still lying propped against a bundle of supply sacks, chest wrapped tight, when Lyra arrived at the medical tent, her composed authority somehow undiminished despite the chaos of the night, though Arlen caught the faint shadows beneath her eyes that suggested even she hadn’t been unaffected by what had happened.

”I need your account,” she said, settling onto an overturned crate beside his makeshift bed without preamble. ”Everything you remember. Take your time, but don’t leave anything out, however small it seems.”

Arlen recounted it as carefully as his still-scattered thoughts allowed — the unnatural quiet in the trees, the massive, breathing shape in the darkness, the pale, luminous eyes that had turned toward them with what felt like deliberate awareness rather than simple predatory instinct. He described the speed of the strike, the strange, sheared quality of the destruction in its wake, and finally, haltingly, the sound it had made just before the impact — not a roar, but something closer, impossibly, to a single spoken word he hadn’t understood.

Lyra’s expression remained carefully neutral throughout, though her stillness at that last detail told Arlen she found it as unsettling as he had.

”A word,” she repeated. ”You’re certain.”

”I don’t know what else to call it. It wasn’t an animal sound. It had... shape to it. Intention.” Arlen shook his head slightly, the memory still raw enough to make his chest tighten independent of his injuries. ”I’ve never heard anything like it.”

”Neither has anyone else who’s reported to me tonight,” Lyra said quietly. ”Which is, on its own, deeply troubling. This region has faced Rank 5 threats before, rarely, but they’re documented. Nothing in any record describes a creature that speaks, or that breaks off an attack it could clearly finish.”

”Why didn’t it?” Arlen asked. ”Finish it, I mean.”

”I don’t know.” Lyra’s composed mask slipped for just a moment, genuine uncertainty showing through. ”That troubles me more than almost anything else tonight. A predator that doesn’t press an advantage either isn’t hungry, isn’t threatened by its prey enough to bother, or is following some logic we don’t understand yet. None of those possibilities are comforting.”

She was quiet for a moment, studying him with an attention that felt suddenly more personal than professional. ”Petra mentioned your injuries were considerably more severe than what you’re currently displaying. Ribs that should have taken weeks to heal properly, even with field treatment.”

Arlen felt the careful, familiar tension rise in his chest, though this time, exhausted and still aching, he found the deflection harder to summon smoothly than it had been with Cobb weeks earlier. ”Recovers fast,” he said. ”Always has.”

”That’s the second time tonight I’ve heard something to that effect,” Lyra said, not unkindly, but with a precision that made clear she wasn’t simply accepting it at face value. ”Petra also mentioned you survived a blow that should have killed you outright. Not merely injured you. Killed you.”

Arlen said nothing for a long moment, the exhaustion and lingering pain making it harder than usual to find the careful, measured words he usually relied on. ”I don’t have a better answer than that,” he said finally. ”I wish I did.”

Lyra held his gaze a moment longer, something unreadable behind her composed expression, before she finally, deliberately, let the subject go — though Arlen understood, watching her, that it was a choice rather than genuine satisfaction with his answer.

”We’ll discuss it further once this crisis is properly resolved,” she said. ”For now, rest. I need you well enough to travel by tomorrow, one way or another.”

She rose to leave, pausing once at the tent’s entrance to glance back at him. ”You did well tonight, for what it’s worth. Ilvera’s alive because you signaled in time for support to reach you both before it was too late. That matters, regardless of anything else.”

She left before Arlen could properly respond, and he lay back against the supply sacks once she’d gone, staring up at the tent’s canvas ceiling while the low, urgent murmur of the camp’s continued activity drifted in from outside.

He thought of the pale, ancient eyes, the strange word that wasn’t quite a word, the massive shape withdrawing into the darkness for reasons no one understood. He thought, too, of Lyra’s careful, probing questions, the genuine curiosity beneath her composed exterior that hadn’t been fully satisfied by his deflections tonight.

She doesn’t believe me, he thought, turning the realization over with the same careful attention he gave most things, even exhausted and aching as he was. Not fully. She’s letting it go for now, because there’s a larger crisis to deal with. But she’s not letting it go entirely.

He didn’t have his journal with him tonight — it remained back in his pack at the guild’s inn, along with most of his ordinary life, suddenly and strangely distant from the immediate, urgent reality of the mobilized camp. He found himself composing the entry anyway, in his mind, turning the words over the way he always did before committing them to paper.

Something is out there that doesn’t match anything the guild understands. It spoke, or did something close enough to speaking that I can’t call it anything else. It could have killed me and Ilvera both, and chose not to, for reasons nobody can explain.

And now Lyra is watching me more closely than she was yesterday. I don’t know yet how much of a problem that will become. Tonight, I’m too tired, and too grateful simply to be alive, to worry about it properly.

Tomorrow, I suspect, I won’t have that luxury.

He closed his eyes, the distant sounds of the camp settling gradually into something almost like quiet, and let exhaustion finally, mercifully, drag him down into sleep — though even there, he found no rest from the memory of pale, ancient eyes watching him from the dark.
