Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 21: Chapter 21 — The Shifting Line

The first day’s travel felt, for the better part of the morning, almost familiar.

They followed the north trail past the point Arlen had walked a dozen times gathering Silverleaf, and for a while the forest looked exactly as he remembered it — dappled light, birdsong, the ordinary rustle of small unseen creatures moving through the undergrowth. Yorin set the pace at the front of the group, unhurried but purposeful, occasionally pausing to crouch and examine a print or a broken stem before waving the party onward without comment.

”He’s not just walking,” Reya said quietly, falling into step beside Arlen when she noticed him watching the scout work. ”He’s reading the whole trail as we go. Anything unusual, he’ll flag it before it becomes a problem instead of after.”

”How do you learn to do that?”

”Years. Same as everything else worth learning.” She said it without any particular weight behind it, the same easy, practical tone she used for most things. ”You’ll pick pieces of it up faster than you’d think, doing what you’re doing. Watching, asking, paying attention to people who already know.”

By early afternoon, the character of the forest had begun, subtly at first, to change. The trees grew taller, the canopy thicker overhead, filtering the daylight down into a deeper, greener shade than the outer trail’s dappled brightness. The undergrowth thinned in places where too little light reached the forest floor to sustain it, replaced by a soft carpet of fallen needles and moss that muffled their footsteps into near silence.

Petra, walking a short distance ahead with Dorn, paused at one point to study a cluster of pale, faintly luminescent fungus growing along a rotted log, murmuring something to herself before making a careful note in a small logbook she carried.

”Mana-touched growth,” she explained, when Arlen’s curiosity got the better of him and he asked. ”Not dangerous on its own, but it’s a marker — indicates the ambient mana density’s climbing the further we go. Outer forest barely registers on a mana reading. Out here, it’s noticeably thicker.”

”Does that matter for us?”

”Mostly it means the wildlife gets stranger, and stronger, the deeper the density runs. Monsters especially — richer mana supports bigger, more capable creatures.” Petra closed her logbook. ”It’s part of why the boundary carries a higher rank recommendation. Not because any single threat here is unbeatable, but because the margin for error narrows considerably.”

They made camp that evening a comfortable distance short of what Yorin identified as the actual boundary line — close enough that they’d reach it easily the following day, far enough that they weren’t sleeping in unfamiliar territory their first night out. Arlen set to work on his assigned duties with the same careful thoroughness he brought to everything, gathering deadwood for a fire, setting up the cooking pot, laying out bedrolls in a loose circle around the small clearing Yorin had selected.

”You’ve done this before,” Dorn observed, watching Arlen work with an efficiency that clearly surprised him.

”Not exactly this. But I’ve spent a lot of years figuring out how to make very little go a long way.” Arlen checked the fire, adjusting a log to catch better. ”Camp work’s not so different from managing a household on no coin. Just outdoors, mostly.”

Dorn laughed at that, a genuine, warm sound. ”Fair enough. Reya picked well, bringing you along.”

Dinner that evening was simple but well-received — a stew made from the dried provisions Arlen had purchased plus a handful of wild herbs Petra identified as safe along the way, seasoned with the small collection of spices he’d packed on instinct more than plan. Fennis, uncharacteristically talkative around the fire, admitted it was better than most camp cooking she’d endured on previous expeditions.

”High praise,” Reya said, amused. ”Fennis doesn’t compliment food unless it’s actually earned.”

”I don’t compliment anything unless it’s earned,” Fennis said, which was, Arlen was beginning to understand, roughly the closest thing to warmth the quiet scout offered anyone.

He took first watch that night at Yorin’s suggestion — a low-risk shift, early enough that any real danger was unlikely, but a chance for Arlen to practice the discipline of it under Yorin’s occasional quiet guidance from a few feet away, still awake himself despite technically being off duty.

”You keep glancing at the same three spots,” Yorin observed, not unkindly, from where he sat sharpening a knife by the fire’s dying light.

”Should I not?”

”No, it’s good instinct. Just widen it a little. Predators out here don’t always come from where you’re expecting.” Yorin tested the knife’s edge against his thumb, satisfied, and set it aside. ”Middle forest’s not more dangerous because the creatures are smarter. It’s more dangerous because there’s more of them, and more variety, and less of it’s been properly documented yet. Fewer easy assumptions to lean on.”

”Is that why the guild wants surveys done? Documentation?”

”Partly. Merchant consortium wants a safer trade route, and you can’t map a safe route through territory nobody’s bothered charting properly.” Yorin glanced toward the dark tree line beyond their small camp. ”Partly it’s just that somebody’s got to be the one who goes first, so the ones who come after don’t have to guess.”

Arlen thought about that for a long while after Yorin turned in, sitting alone by the fire with the whole unfamiliar weight of the forest pressing in around the small circle of light, listening to sounds he couldn’t identify drifting in from somewhere out in the dark — not threatening, exactly, just unfamiliar, the ordinary night-noise of an ecosystem he hadn’t yet learned to read the way he’d learned to read the outer trail.

He opened his journal by the firelight and wrote, carefully, by feel more than sight:

Middle forest boundary, first night. Everything’s slightly different here — the light, the smell, even the sound of my own footsteps on the moss. Petra says the mana density’s climbing. You can almost believe it, walking through it. The air feels thicker somehow, though maybe that’s just imagination working overtime.

Yorin says somebody has to go first so others don’t have to guess. I think I understand, a little, why that appeals to people. There’s something in being the one who finds out, instead of just hearing about it secondhand.

I want to be that person. Not just here. Everywhere.

He closed the journal before the fire burned too low to see by, and sat for a while longer in the quiet, watching sparks drift upward into a canopy so thick overhead that he couldn’t make out a single star through it — a strange, small absence that struck him, more than anything else that day, as proof of exactly how far from familiar ground he’d actually traveled.

Tomorrow, Yorin had told him, they’d reach the boundary proper.

Arlen found he could hardly wait.
