Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 41: Chapter 41 — Recovery

The days that followed passed slowly, marked less by any single dramatic event and more by the quiet, grinding patience of actual healing — something Arlen found, somewhat to his own surprise, harder to endure than the crisis itself had been.

Aria checked on him each morning, noting his steady improvement with the same careful professionalism she brought to everything, though even she seemed mildly puzzled by how quickly his ribs continued mending compared to what she’d expect from an ordinary Rank E adventurer’s recovery.

”Another few days,” she told him, on the fourth morning, pressing gently along his side and finding considerably less resistance than she clearly anticipated. ”You’re healing faster than you should be, even accounting for whatever talent you’re carrying. I won’t complain about it, but I admit it’s a bit unusual.”

”I’ll take unusual, if it means walking properly again sooner,” Arlen said, and meant it, though the comment landed with more private weight than he let show.

He spent much of his forced convalescence in the guild hall’s common areas rather than confined entirely to the medical wing, watching the slow, uneasy rhythm of a city adjusting to genuine fear for the first time in his memory of it. Fewer adventurers lingered casually at the tavern in the evenings. Conversations carried a tighter, more guarded edge than the easy, familiar chatter he’d grown used to. Even Brakka, usually unshakeable in his gruff good humor, seemed distracted these days, glancing more often than usual toward the guild hall’s entrance as though expecting bad news to walk through it at any moment.

Ilvera remained the one piece of news Arlen found himself checking on daily, more out of a persistent, nagging guilt than simple curiosity. She’d regained consciousness on the third day, weak but lucid, and word filtered back through her party that she remembered little of the actual attack beyond a confused, fragmented impression of darkness and sudden, overwhelming pain.

He visited her once she was well enough for visitors, finding her propped up in a modest guild-provided room, paler than he remembered but alert, her eyes tracking him carefully as he entered.

”You’re the one who signaled,” she said, before he’d even properly sat down. ”Petra told me. Said if you hadn’t, neither of us would have made it.”

”You’d have done the same,” Arlen said, though the words felt inadequate against the memory of her crumpled, terribly still form in the torchlit clearing.

”Maybe.” She studied him a moment, something searching in her tired gaze. ”Doesn’t change that I owe you for it. Whatever that’s worth to you.”

”It’s worth plenty,” Arlen said honestly. ”Mostly, I’m just glad you’re alive to be annoyed about owing me anything.”

That earned him a small, pained laugh, quickly suppressed as her ribs protested the movement, and Arlen left the visit with something loosened in his chest that had been sitting tight there since the night of the attack — not fully resolved, but eased, at least, by the simple fact of her continued survival.

It was that evening, alone in the small guest room the guild had provided him for his recovery, that Arlen finally allowed himself to sit properly with everything the past week had forced him to confront.

He’d faced danger before — the jackals, the wasps, even the ordinary risks of solo forest work — and each time, he’d walked away having learned something concrete about his own limits, some lesson he could carry forward and build upon. This was different. He hadn’t survived Millbrook through skill, or preparation, or even particularly good judgment. He’d survived because Enduring Vitality had absorbed damage that should have killed him outright, and because something ancient and inexplicable had, for reasons no one understood, chosen not to finish what it started.

That’s not enough, he thought, turning the realization over with the same careful, unflinching honesty he applied to his own failures. Luck kept me alive. Not strength. Not preparation. Luck, and whatever mercy that thing decided to show, for reasons I’ll probably never understand.

He thought of Iron Vanguard’s calm, practiced competence during the wolf pack mobilization, of the reinforcements Garrick had said were still days away, specialists operating at a level even the Ashen Frontier’s most experienced adventurers couldn’t fully match. He thought, too, of his own two modest abilities — Enduring Vitality, Water Affinity — useful, certainly, but nowhere near sufficient against something that could level buildings and shatter trees like kindling.

He opened his journal, the familiar weight of it settling into his hands like an old, steadying habit, and wrote with more deliberate resolve than he had in weeks.

I nearly died. Not from carelessness, not from a mistake I can learn from and correct next time, but simply because whatever I currently have wasn’t enough, and there was nothing more I could have done differently to change that outcome. That’s a harder lesson than any I’ve faced so far, because there’s no clean correction waiting on the other side of it. I can’t simply ask better questions next time, the way I did after the goat, or the jackals. The gap between what I am and what nearly killed me is too wide to close through caution alone.

I promised myself, dying in that other life, that I wouldn’t waste this second chance. That promise was always about seeing the world, tasting everything it had to offer, exploring every corner I could reach. I still want all of that. But I understand now, in a way I didn’t fully grasp before Millbrook, that wanting to see the world isn’t the same as being capable of surviving it.

So I’m making a second promise to myself, alongside the first. Once this crisis is resolved — once whatever’s out there is dealt with, one way or another — I intend to actually push myself properly. Not just careful, incremental quest work. Real training. Seeking out new creatures deliberately, not simply when convenience or a posting happens to align. If this ability of mine is going to keep growing whether I actively pursue it or not, I’d rather grow it with purpose than simply stumble into whatever comes next the way I stumbled into Enduring Vitality and Water Affinity both.

I want to explore everything this world has to offer. I still believe that as fully as I did the day I registered at this guild. But I understand now that the world doesn’t wait politely for someone unprepared to catch up to it. Millbrook proved that plainly enough.

I don’t know yet what shape that training should take, or how to properly seek out the kind of growth I’m imagining. But I know I don’t want to be caught, ever again, the way I was caught in that clearing — surviving purely on luck and mercy, rather than genuine strength I’ve actually earned.

Once this is over, I intend to get stronger. Properly. Deliberately. Whatever it takes.

He closed the journal, the resolve settling into him with a quiet, steady weight that felt different from his usual careful patience — sharper, more urgent, though no less deliberate for the intensity behind it. Outside his window, Greyhaven’s rooftops stretched into the gathering dusk, the city carrying on despite its fear, ordinary life persisting alongside extraordinary danger the way it always seemed to.

Somewhere beyond those rooftops, past the forest’s watchful, uneasy quiet, reinforcements were still traveling toward a threat nobody yet fully understood. And somewhere within himself, Arlen understood, a different kind of journey was quietly beginning as well — one that would ask considerably more of him than careful observation and patient waiting ever had before.
