Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 34: Chapter 34 — Escalation

The alarm bell rang three days later, but this time it wasn’t the same brisk, controlled urgency Arlen remembered from the wolf pack mobilization months earlier. This time, the runner who burst through the guild hall’s doors was bleeding from a shallow cut along one arm, breathless, half-stumbling before Lyra caught him.

”Millbrook Hamlet,” he gasped out, once he’d steadied enough to speak clearly. ”Something came through in the night. Not wolves. Not anything I’ve ever seen before. Half the outer houses are gone, torn apart. I don’t know how many are dead.”

The guild hall went very quiet.

”Details,” Lyra said, her composed voice cutting through the sudden silence with practiced authority, though Arlen caught the faintest tightness in her jaw that hadn’t been there during the wolf pack crisis. ”What did you see?”

”Big. Bigger than anything Rank 4 or 5 should be, moving through terrain that close to the outer boundary. I didn’t get a clear look — it was dark, and I was running.” The runner’s hands were shaking. ”It didn’t chase far. Turned back toward the forest before we cleared the tree line. But it’s still out there, and Millbrook’s got maybe sixty people left who couldn’t run fast enough.”

Lyra didn’t hesitate. ”Full mobilization. Rank D and above, immediate. Rank E, report for secondary support and evacuation assistance.” Her voice carried through the hall without needing to rise. ”This isn’t a territorial dispute. Move.”

Arlen felt his badge suddenly weigh differently at his collar than it had a moment before — Rank E, eligible now in a way he hadn’t been during the wolf pack crisis, called up rather than simply watching from the wall.

He found Reya already moving toward the courtyard, Dorn and Fennis close behind her, all three of them shedding the easy tavern warmth of days earlier for something harder, more focused.

”You’re up too,” Reya said, catching sight of him. ”Stay close to Petra’s group if you can manage it — she’s leading secondary support. Evacuation and field medicine, not front-line engagement. That’s not a demotion, that’s just sense, given you’ve never faced anything above Rank 3.”

”Understood,” Arlen said, and found he meant it without any wounded pride attached — the memory of Iron Vanguard’s calm, practiced readiness still vivid enough in his mind that he understood, clearly, the difference between eagerness and recklessness.

The courtyard filled quickly with adventurers Arlen recognized in fragments — Iron Vanguard among them, Doran already shouldering his shield with the same grim efficiency Arlen remembered, Sister Aria’s satchel considerably fuller than usual. Petra found him within minutes, her own expression tighter than Arlen had seen it during the boundary expedition, Yorin at her side already scanning the assembling crowd for the rest of their support group.

”You’ll be helping with evacuation coordination and basic field treatment,” Petra told him, quick and efficient. ”Nothing heroic. Get people moving toward the safe perimeter, help Aria’s healers with anything that doesn’t need advanced treatment, keep your head down if the front line pulls back toward us. Can you handle that?”

”Yes,” Arlen said.

The response force moved out within the half hour, a considerably larger group than the wolf pack mobilization had assembled — perhaps thirty adventurers total, Rank D specialists forming the visible spearhead with Rank E support trailing close behind, moving at a hard, sustained pace toward Millbrook that left even Arlen’s Enduring-Vitality-enhanced stamina working to keep up.

The journey took the better part of the afternoon, urgency pressing the pace faster than any quest Arlen had undertaken before, and the closer they drew to Millbrook, the more the ordinary sounds of the forest seemed to fall away around them — no birdsong, no rustling undergrowth, just an unnatural, watchful quiet that settled over the party like something physical.

”Don’t like this,” Dorn muttered, close enough for Arlen to hear. ”Forest’s never this quiet. Not even during a real hunt.”

They reached Millbrook as the light began fading toward evening, and the damage, when it finally came into view, silenced whatever conversation remained among the response party entirely.

Three houses near the settlement’s outer edge had been reduced to little more than splintered wood and collapsed thatch, torn apart with a violence that looked less like an attack and more like something enormous had simply walked through them without particular effort. A wide furrow gouged through the earth beyond the ruined structures, deep enough that Arlen could have laid down inside it, tracking off toward the tree line in a path that suggested something considerably larger than any Rank 5 creature the guild bestiary described.

The surviving villagers had gathered near the settlement’s central well, huddled and frightened, several with visible injuries that Aria’s healers moved quickly to address. Arlen fell into his assigned role almost immediately, helping coordinate the frightened, exhausted crowd toward the safer perimeter the guild’s advance scouts had established, fetching water and blankets, doing what small, practical good he could while the Rank D specialists spread out to assess the wider damage.

”It came from the northeast,” one villager told him, an older woman with a bandaged arm, her voice still shaking. ”Middle of the night. We heard the trees breaking before we saw anything at all. By the time we got a proper look, it was already past the Hendricks’ place, and the Hendricks’ place just... wasn’t there anymore.”

”Did you see what it looked like?” Arlen asked gently.

”Big. Dark. Moved wrong, somehow — too smooth for something that size.” She shuddered. ”I’ve lived near this forest my whole life. Never seen anything like it. Never even heard of anything like it.”

Arlen relayed what he’d gathered to Petra as soon as he had the chance, and watched her expression tighten further as she passed the information along to the gathering knot of Rank D leaders assessing the damage — Doran, Selene, a scout Arlen didn’t recognize, all of them studying the massive furrow in the earth with grim, focused attention.

”Whatever left this wasn’t Rank 5,” Selene said quietly, kneeling beside the furrow’s edge. ”Nothing at that rank moves through terrain like this without more visible strain on the environment. This is something else entirely.”

”How much else?” Doran asked.

Nobody answered immediately, and in that silence, Arlen felt the same cold, settling unease he’d carried since the tavern gossip first started days earlier — the wildlife displacement, the strange carving in Eldrin’s ruin, the accumulating weight of small, unexplained things finally converging into something undeniable and immediate.

Lyra arrived with the rear guard as full dark settled over the ruined hamlet, surveying the damage with the same composed authority she brought to everything, though even she seemed to pause, briefly, at the sight of the massive furrow carved through the earth.

”Full search perimeter,” she ordered, once she’d taken stock. ”I want eyes on whatever did this before it reaches another settlement. Careful approach — nobody engages without backup confirmed. Understood?”

The response spread out across the darkened forest edge in careful, coordinated groups, and Arlen found himself, along with Petra’s support team, assigned to the search perimeter’s outer edge — not the most dangerous position, but close enough to the tree line that the unnatural quiet from earlier pressed in around them with mounting, uncomfortable weight.

He gripped his sword, sweat cooling against his skin despite the evening chill, and listened to the forest’s strange, watchful silence, thinking of the massive furrow behind them, the old woman’s shaking voice, the word wrong she’d used to describe how the creature moved.

Somewhere out there, in the deepening dark beyond the search party’s torchlight, something waited that even Rank D veterans hadn’t yet found a name for.

Arlen moved forward carefully into the tree line, every sense sharpened, and did not yet know that he was about to become the first to find it.
