Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 916: Chapter 917: No Hypotheticals

After being interrupted by Cheng Su, Hualing felt less sorrowful and melancholic. Her mood improved significantly, and she could discuss the issue of forgiveness with Cheng Su.

”Actually, I really don’t know what to do. When I think of his betrayal, I hate him so much it gnaws at my insides. I cry day and night, feeling like the sky is falling, I can’t eat, and I can’t sleep well. You’ve seen the sorry state I’m in, haven’t you? That’s how it started.” Hualing pointed to her own face and said, ”Because of this, I’ve thought about divorce countless times. When I think about him being intimate with another woman and then with me... I just find him filthy, disgustingly filthy, and I can’t stand it.”

Cheng Su remained silent. She could understand. So-called marital fidelity means being faithful in both body and mind. When one party opens up to a third party, the other is bound to feel uncomfortable.

”I hit him, I cursed him, even my parents scolded him for being heartless. My dad even smashed an ashtray on his head, leaving a wound. But in the end, what my parents said was, as long as he completely cuts ties with that woman, for the sake of the child, forgive him this time.” Hualing chuckled, touching her still undisclosed belly, and said, ”You see, having a child becomes a leverage. Even divorce becomes difficult.”

Cheng Su listened and wasn’t surprised. In the 21st century, this kind of thing is common. How many couples make do just for the sake of the kids? And how many parents advise to let it go, for the kids’ sake?

Not to mention, this is the mid-1980s, where the divorce rate was incredibly low, and such matters were typically swept under the rug.

”And what about you? What’s your own thought? Do you want to leave?”

Hualing shook her head, ”I’m not sure, I don’t know. Sometimes I think, if I leave, wouldn’t that be letting that woman have her way? Why should I give in to such a shameless person and her illegitimate child? Then my child would become fatherless. If I don’t leave, how do I face Chen Shouwang? I really find it disgusting. Moreover, can I even keep the child in my belly?”

Cheng Su pursed her lips and said, ”Actually, the key is you, not the child. The most important thing is yourself. Do you think that by choosing to forgive and having a child, this thorn will be removed? In the future, will you not keep picking at this thorn looking for trouble? Hualing, this will be a chasm between you and Chen Shouwang, child or no child. If you choose forgiveness, can you confidently overcome this? If you can’t, then you both will suffer for the rest of your lives.”

Those who cannot move past it will, in love and hate, keep clinging to this thorn, like two hedgehogs wanting to get close but ending up getting hurt.

Does such a marriage make sense?

Hualing’s face changed slightly.

She understood what Cheng Su was saying; this was exactly what she was considering and struggling with.

”I know, I know it all.” Hualing muttered, ”I have been struggling with it, and it’s so painful. If it were you, what would you do?”

Cheng Su immediately said, ”Hualing, there’s no hypothetical scenario here, everyone’s character is different, and it’s hard to generalize. But if it were me facing this problem, I would absolutely divorce Qi Taiguo immediately, that’s a non-negotiable choice. Infidelity to me is not a question of whether there are surprises or reasons, it’s just about whether or not it happened. This is a matter of principle and my bottom line.”

Hualing looked deeply at her, ”Yes, everyone has different characters.”
