Chapter 282: Chapter 187 Clo lights up a cigarette_2Black armor glittered with a cold sheen under the light, the custom size making it fit his forearm perfectly. He swung his right fist, feeling a familiar yet strange sense of power.

This piece of individual equipment was lightweight and portable, capable of enhancing a soldier’s strength, improving shooting accuracy, and reducing the recoil of firearms on the arm. It also had some small attached functions, which made it a rare treasure when he was in the service.

Only now, active soldiers hardly used them anymore.

He walked out of the storeroom, put on a long-sleeved jacket, and carefully concealed his right arm’s armor. Then, he slipped the magazine into his handgun and tucked it into his waistband.

He glanced toward his daughter’s room, a smile unconsciously spreading across his face. A cute cartoon rabbit doorbell hung on the wooden door, something he and his daughter had made together just a week ago.

Then his gaze shifted from tenderness to determination. He touched the gun at his side, and for the first time since his discharge, he felt a sense of security well up inside him.

Just as in his military days, on the battlefield, only the cold steel of firearms could give him this feeling of safety.

Anyway, he had to get the special drug tonight by any means necessary.

He walked to the front door, and on his way out, he casually took his wife’s red silk scarf from the standing coat rack. He had given her that scarf on her twenty-fifth birthday.

She treasured it, treating it as a collectible, only wearing it for important gatherings.

He shook out the scarf, dusting it off; it had not been washed in a long time.

Turning off the lights and closing the door, he stepped briskly into the darkness.

Unbeknownst to him, in a room across the street corner, a man and an octopus-like woman quietly watched his retreating figure.

”Don’t look at him directly, use your peripheral vision; otherwise, he’ll notice,” Yaxi said indifferently.

These high-ranking soldiers cultivated by the Three Major Groups through iron-blooded methods had extremely keen senses and sharp intuition. They could easily sense the gaze of enemies on them, making it difficult even for professional snipers to kill them through normal means.

The octopus-like woman nodded. She looked towards a subsidized housing unit at the same level, where the little girl’s room lights had gone out.

”She’s going to die tonight,” Yaxi said, looking in the same direction, ”I gave her a strong dose; she won’t survive it.”

”Um...” the octopus-like woman ”ummed” towards Yaxi.

Yaxi glanced at her, his voice still flat, ”Stop ’umming.’ Haven’t I taught you sign language?”

”Um!” The octopus-like woman nodded seriously and then started gesturing to Yaxi.

”Save her?” Yaxi understood her meaning but shook his head, ”No, we can’t save her. I don’t need a pawn; I need a revenger who’s fully intent on dying. If his daughter is alive, he won’t be driven by such a wish.”

The octopus-like woman’s gaze returned to the room, silent and expressionless, without a word.

”You’re becoming more human.” Yaxi seemed to sense her mood, smiling gently, a smile that came from within.

”Um?” The octopus-like woman began gesturing again, her tentacles inadvertently resting on Yaxi’s waist without her realizing.

”Yes, my mistake, you were human to begin with,” Yaxi raised his hands in surrender, pushing away her tentacles.

”Um.” The octopus-like woman looked in the direction the man had disappeared, saying something with her hands.

”No, he’s important,” Yaxi’s face was unreadable, ”He’s just one of many such unstable elements among the retired soldiers. All they need is a spark to ignite them completely.”

He gestured toward the direction where the man had vanished, ”He could be that spark.”

---

A flicker of hope ignited in the man’s heart as the scenery during his walk calmed him somewhat.

Even though it was late at night and during lockdown, today’s official announcement of the ”Mutant Clearance Complete” was like a strong dose of heart tonic for every resident of Thirteen District.

So near Downtown, people dared to come out again, and once people were out, scattered shops began to open, and bright colorful lights lit up the streets.

Perhaps...

Perhaps Joseph had already restored the drugs to their regular prices.

He hurried toward the only place selling special drugs in these few blocks.

After the lockdown, hospitals and clinics were completely shut down, and while everyday drugs could still be found in pharmacies, those not needed for everyday use were hoarded and sold by designated persons in each area.

There was no doubt this was the pharmaceutical companies cashing in on the recent calamity.

Fortunately, prices might be reduced today.

After a twenty-minute walk, he arrived at the entrance to the factory area.

”Since when...” He stared at the factory compound, now heavily guarded, a stark contrast to his first visit.

The compound was now enclosed by high electric fences, and a fully armed squad was standing guard at the entrance.

He knew the drugs were inside the compound, but the difficulty of forcibly obtaining them now was incomparable to before.

But with no other choice, he still approached the large gate with a touch of foolish hope.
