Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse

For a moment, everyone fell silent.

Even a massive Aberrant Beast couldn’t withstand the sandstorm, let alone a group of humans like them.

Right now, they could do nothing but wait inside this house.

Those who had been unwilling to stay put were now, one by one, resigning themselves to their fate.

But they soon learned that even resignation was a luxury.

Hector Grant’s gaze swept over the crowd as he spoke in a heavy tone, ”The Aberrant Beast slammed into the house hard. The main structure has some cracks.”

No one there was a fool.

On the contrary, each person’s mind raced faster than the last.

Without Hector Grant needing to say another word, they all understood his implication.

With the main structure cracked, there was no telling how long the house could hold up against the raging sandstorm.

If they lost the shelter of this house, how long could they last?

They might be swept up into the sky by the sandstorm in a matter of minutes.

Before, they had complained that the house confined them. They grumbled that the second floor was too small, forcing so many people to squeeze together that every movement was awkward.

Now, facing the possibility that the house might not hold, they finally realized how fortunate they were to have such a place to shelter them from the wind and sand.

That’s just how people are.

When something is easily obtained, they find a thousand reasons to dislike it.

Only when they are about to lose it do they begin to feel regret.

Although a sense of panic flared in their hearts, it didn’t last long.

After all, these weren’t ordinary survivors; they were quick-witted.

Several Gold Ability Users stood up. ”Captain Grant, let’s go check the cracks and try to repair them. That should buy us more time!”

They weren’t sure if they could fix it completely, but making the house last even a little longer was better than nothing.

This was what Hector Grant had been planning all along.

But he didn’t voice his thoughts.

He was waiting for them to volunteer.

As a Superpower User himself, Hector Grant understood their mentality. On the surface, they respected him as their captain, but in their hearts, many were unconvinced of his authority.

For Superpower Users, it was quite normal to have such arrogant thoughts.

But Hector Grant had no intention of coddling them.

’If I don’t take this opportunity to make them fall in line, how am I supposed to lead them later?’

Hector Grant looked at the Gold Ability Users. ”It’s good that you’re thinking this way! We don’t know what the final outcome will be, but at least we can try. That’s enough! Let’s go! I’ll take you to see the damage!”

There were quite a few Gold Ability Users.

Dozens of people followed Hector Grant, departing in a large group.

With so many people suddenly gone, the entire second floor felt much more spacious.

Jayce pulled his gaze back from the departing Hector Grant, a faint smile on his lips. ”He really is suited to be a captain.”

Sierra Sullivan completely agreed with that statement.

Some people are just born with stronger leadership skills. Add a little intelligence to that, and you have a natural-born leader.

Hector Grant happened to be one of them.

Of course, this wasn’t to say Sierra Sullivan and Jayce weren’t smart or capable; they just didn’t have the inclination for it.

’The right job should be done by the right person!’

Nathan Thorne didn’t quite hear what the two were saying and didn’t ask, but his face was etched with worry. ”This house isn’t really going to collapse, is it?”

He often said that every extra day he lived was a bonus and that dying wouldn’t be a loss.

But if possible, he still wanted to live a few more days!

Jayce clapped Nathan Thorne firmly on the shoulder. ”Captain Grant isn’t an idiot. If the house was really about to give way, he would’ve already come up with a solution. You don’t need to worry!”

”Then just now, he—”

Before he could finish, Nathan Thorne’s eyes widened.

He wasn’t a fool either, and he quickly figured out why Hector Grant had done what he did.

Having understood everything, Nathan Thorne exclaimed, ”These leaders... their minds are full of twists and turns!”

Sierra Sullivan looked at him, amused. ”If I remember correctly, you used to be a leader too, right?”

Nathan Thorne was speechless. ”...”

’Did I just insult myself?’

Seeing Nathan Thorne fall silent, Sierra Sullivan smiled so broadly her eyes crinkled into crescents.

An hour later, Hector Grant returned with his people.

They all looked relieved; it was clear they had repaired the house.

At least for the time being, there shouldn’t be any more problems.

As for the future... they would deal with the future when it came. ’What’s the point of thinking so far ahead!’

After this little incident, the people on the second floor were noticeably quieter than before.

Or perhaps, more mature.

With nothing to do all day, they no longer got on each other’s nerves.

The insults and accusations stopped, as did the fights and brawls.

Whenever they had free time, everyone would take out Crystal Cores to absorb, each one hoping to enhance their Superpower a little more.

It wasn’t about whether they could save more people, but at the very least, they could protect themselves, avoid becoming a burden, and not have to wait for others to get them home.

In the blink of an eye, another half a month passed.

The sandstorm still showed no sign of stopping.

In fact, compared to before, it seemed to have gotten even stronger.

Realizing this, many people’s fragile peace of mind was shattered, and they started cursing again.

”Is this storm trying to trap us here until we die?”

”It’s like the sky has sprung a leak! Where is all this sand being blown in from?”

”Yeah! It couldn’t all be coming from a desert or the Gobi, could it?”

Listening to their complaints and confusion, Sierra Sullivan also found it strange.

’All this sand couldn’t have just appeared out of thin air.’

’Those rocks that made the Aberrant Beasts and zombies so agitated, and those mutated animals that were clearly not native species—none of them could have appeared from nothing.’

But as for where they actually came from, Sierra Sullivan truly had no idea.

Although she had been reborn, she had died too early in her previous life and had never come into contact with any secrets. Now, just like everyone else, she was completely in the dark.

Just as she was pondering this, she saw Hector Grant walk over.

As soon as Hector Grant arrived, he sat down in a camping chair.

”If we can’t get back soon, we’ll have to find another way to suppress their emotions, or at least distract them.”

As he spoke, Hector Grant couldn’t help but let out a long sigh.

’What a mess this is!’

If they were facing a horde of Aberrant Beasts and zombies, he could grit his teeth and lead a charge.

But in this situation, he could do nothing but wait here.

Even though they had plenty of food and drink, the pressure on Hector Grant grew day by day. He looked exhausted, both mentally and physically.

Candice Tate sprouted a handful of strawberries and walked up to Hector Grant. ”Hector, have some strawberries! My sister said that when you’re in a bad mood, eating something sweet will make you feel better!”
