Sierra Sullivan used to think the vehicles back at the base were already impressive.

They could drive on such thick sand.

But now, seeing this vehicle that was practically a steel behemoth, she finally understood the meaning of being dwarfed by comparison.

Even without knowing its other functions, just looking at its design gave one an immense sense of security.

If an adult like Sierra was shocked, it went without saying for a child like Candice Tate.

Candice Tate’s eyes widened. ”Big Sister, what is that?”

”It’s a vehicle,” Sierra replied. ”We’ll be riding in it in a little while.”

Candice’s shock didn’t lessen; it grew.

”I’ve never seen a vehicle like this. Can it really move? It looks so clumsy.”

Hearing Candice’s last sentence, Sierra almost laughed out loud.

’So what shocked Candice was completely different from what shocked me!’

”Once we’re on board, you’ll see if it can move or not.”

There were three of these steel behemoths in total.

Although Sierra didn’t know their exact numbers, she estimated there were no fewer than two hundred people.

For so many people to fit into just three vehicles, the interior space must be quite large.

Just as Sierra had thought, each vehicle could accommodate about a hundred people.

The seats inside were similar to those on a coach bus.

Sierra and her group boarded relatively late, so they could only sit at the very back.

This worked out just fine, and Sierra was quite satisfied.

Just as she sat down, she heard Nathan Thorne’s delighted voice. ”Mr. Crawford! You’re on this vehicle too!”

Sierra followed Nathan’s gaze and saw Dominic Crawford sitting by the aisle in the row right in front of them.

When they were getting on, Sierra had been focused on looking after Candice and hadn’t paid attention to anyone else, so she hadn’t noticed Dominic.

Now that she saw him, she had to admit it was quite a coincidence.

Sierra hadn’t seen Dominic, but he must have seen them just now.

’He saw us but didn’t say hello...’

Sierra didn’t want to probe into the reason why Dominic hadn’t greeted them.

She just marveled at Nathan’s carefree nature.

Since Nathan had initiated the conversation, whatever Dominic might be thinking, he had no choice but to turn around and speak to them with a smile.

”So you came after all.”

As he spoke, Dominic’s gaze fell upon Candice.

”I didn’t expect you to bring Candice, too.”

Before Sierra could speak, Candice piped up on her own.

”I wanted to come myself! I want to be with Big Sister!”

Dominic was taken aback for a moment upon hearing this.

But when he remembered how much Candice relied on Sierra, he understood.

”You’re so brave, Candice!” Dominic praised her.

It was so dangerous outside, yet Candice had the courage to come along. She really wasn’t like other children.

Candice’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. ”Big Sister isn’t scared, so I’m not scared either!”

Dominic smiled but didn’t say anything more.

As they were talking, the vehicle started moving.

Feeling the vehicle move, Candice immediately turned to look at the window.

The windows were small, and the glass was very thick.

A sandstorm was raging outside, so she could barely see anything.

But Candice kept staring out the window anyway.

She had been in Subterra for too long, where everything was always dim. She longed to see a different kind of scenery.

Even if that different scenery was just a sky full of yellow sand.

Sierra had previously thought that since the vehicle looked so cumbersome, it probably wouldn’t be very fast.

But to her surprise, the vehicle was very fast, even faster than the ones they had driven before.

’Indeed, no matter the era, technology is always advancing.’

She was even more shocked when she learned that the vehicle didn’t run on fuel, but used Crystal Cores as its power source.

’Have the experts’ development and application of Crystal Cores already reached this stage?’

’This is incredible!’

’Are the lights in Subterra also powered by Crystal Cores?’

The more Sierra thought about it, the more plausible it seemed.

The apocalypse had brought disaster, but it had also spurred technological progress.

She didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad thing.

But whether good or bad, the apocalypse had already arrived. People couldn’t change it; all they could do was accept it.

The vehicle was fast, but their destination was also quite far.

First, they had to leave the city limits.

Just leaving the city took the entire morning.

This was the first time Sierra had left the city since the apocalypse began.

Maybe it was good luck, but after they left the city, the sandstorm noticeably subsided.

Eventually, it even stopped completely.

The dust and sand in the air gradually dissipated.

Although the view was still hazy, their line of sight had cleared up considerably.

Even looking out from the small windows of the vehicle, they could see far into the distance.

In all this time since the apocalypse began, this was the first time a sandstorm had completely stopped.

Everyone on the vehicle erupted with excitement.

Did the end of the sandstorm mean that things were about to get better?

Listening to the hushed whispers of the people on board, Sierra’s own thoughts were not so optimistic.

Looking at the gloomy sky, Sierra had a feeling.

’It feels like the calm before a much bigger storm.’

But Sierra didn’t voice this thought.

Everyone was excited right now. Saying something like that would just be a wet blanket, and there was no need for it.

Still, the sandstorm stopping had its benefits.

The most important one was that their vision was no longer obstructed, allowing the vehicle to travel even faster.

According to Hector Grant’s original plan, it would be best if they could reach their destination in two days.

But because the sandstorm had suddenly stopped, their speed increased by more than just a little.

By that evening, when the sky was completely dark, they were not too far from their destination.

They could arrive in another two or three hours.

However, visibility was poor at night, and traveling was unsafe, so they had to stop and rest.

After sitting in the vehicle for a whole day, everyone was getting a bit stir-crazy.

So, as soon as the vehicles stopped, everyone got out.

After finding places to relieve themselves, they returned to the side of the vehicles.

At noon, they had made do with dry rations.

Now that the sandstorm was gone, they could actually cook a proper meal.

The Space Ability Users’ storage spaces held the food for the trip.

They even had pots, pans, bowls, ground stoves, and firewood.

Now, all these things were taken out, and in no time, large cooking pots were set up.

Hector Grant organized his subordinates to start cooking.

Once he had arranged everything, he came over and sat down beside Sierra and her group.

Although Sierra had pre-cooked meals in her own storage space, she didn’t want to stand out at a time like this, so she didn’t take them out.

She just took out a bag of crackers for Candice to snack on and tide her over.

Nathan Thorne’s cheeks were also bulging, though it was unclear what he was eating.

But he had a large appetite and got hungry faster than most, so it was understandable.

Hector Grant sat for a good while without speaking, which Sierra found a bit strange. ”Captain Grant, did you come over just to sit here for a bit?”
